    Testing the Quasi-temporal Gauge on the Lattice

    We investigate the viability of the quasi-temporal gauge on the lattice. This is a complete gauge fixing condition that can be implemented on the lattice at a very low computational cost. As a test case, using the Clover action, we have evaluated the (gauge invariant) renormalisation constant of the non-singlet axial current, using Ward identities extracted from quark states. Our result is in reasonable but not complete agreement with previous values obtained from Ward identities both on hadronic states and on quark states in the Landau gauge. We observe large fluctuations due to lattice Gribov copies. The influence of finite volume effects is expected to be non-negligible in the case we are considering.Comment: 10 pages, uuencoded Postscript file including 2 figure

    Non-perturbative renormalization in kaon decays

    We discuss the application of the MPSTV non-perturbative method \cite{NPM} to the operators relevant to kaon decays. This enables us to reappraise the long-standing question of the ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 rule, which involves power-divergent subtractions that cannot be evaluated in perturbation theory.     Exploratory Analysis of Functional Data via Clustering and Optimal Segmentation

    We propose in this paper an exploratory analysis algorithm for functional data. The method partitions a set of functions into KK clusters and represents each cluster by a simple prototype (e.g., piecewise constant). The total number of segments in the prototypes, PP, is chosen by the user and optimally distributed among the clusters via two dynamic programming algorithms. The practical relevance of the method is shown on two real world datasets

    Chiral Limit of Strongly Coupled Lattice Gauge Theories

    We construct a new and efficient cluster algorithm for updating strongly coupled U(N) lattice gauge theories with staggered fermions in the chiral limit. The algorithm uses the constrained monomer-dimer representation of the theory and should also be of interest to researchers working on other models with similar constraints. Using the new algorithm we address questions related to the chiral limit of strongly coupled U(N) gauge theories beyond the mean field approximation. We show that the infinite volume chiral condensate is non-zero in three and four dimensions. However, on a square lattice of size LL we find ∑x∌L2−η\sum_x \sim L^{2-\eta} for large LL where η=0.420(3)/N+0.078(4)/N2\eta = 0.420(3)/N + 0.078(4)/N^2. These results differ from an earlier conclusion obtained using a different algorithm.     Assembling and Verification of a Fitness Test Battery for the Recruitment of the Swiss Army and Nation-Wide Use

    The aim of this study was to assess the reliability, validity and feasibility of selected physical performance tests, to compile a new fi tness test battery based on these results and to obtain standard values for young men. 79 men (20.3 ± 1.1 y) performed the tests for the reliability part, while 60 men (20.3 ± 1.1 y) completed the tests for the validity part of the study. Feasibility was confi rmed by 25 sport experts who conducted the test battery among 1704 men (19.5 ± 1.0 y). For standard values, the data of 12 862 men (19.9 ± 1.0 y) were collected. Based on the reliability and validity data, the following 5 tests were selected for the fi tness-test battery: 1) progressive endurance run, 2) seated 2-kg-shot put, 3) standing long jump, 4) trunk muscle strength test and 5) 1-leg standing test. The reliability and validity of the selected performance tests were suffi cient to very good (r = 0.50–0.90 and r = 0.64–0.91, respectively).
