A Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy Quantum Computer with Tellurium Donors in Silicon
We propose a magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM)-based nuclear spin
quantum computer using tellurium impurities in silicon. This approach to
quantum computing combines the well-developed silicon technology with expected
advances in MRFM.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
Nitrogen and phosphorus limitation of oceanic microbial growth during spring in the Gulf of Aqaba
Bioassay experiments were performed to identify how growth of key groups within the microbial community was simultaneously limited by nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) availability during spring in the Gulf of Aqaba's oceanic waters. Measurements of chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration and fast repetition rate (FRR) fluorescence generally demonstrated that growth of obligate phototrophic phytoplankton was co-limited by N and P and growth of facultative aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotropic (AAP) bacteria was limited by N. Phytoplankton exhibited an increase in chl a biomass over 24 to 48 h upon relief of nutrient limitation. This response coincided with an increase in photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency (F v /F m), but was preceded (within 24 h) by a decrease in effective absorption crosssection (σPSII) and electron turnover time (τ). A similar response for τ and bacterio-chl a was observed for the AAPs. Consistent with the up-regulation of PSII activity with FRR fluorescence were observations of newly synthesized PSII reaction centers via low temperature (77K) fluorescence spectroscopy for addition of N (and N + P). Flow cytometry revealed that the chl a and thus FRR fluorescence responses were partly driven by the picophytoplankton (æ10 μm) community, and in particular Synechococcus. Productivity of obligate heterotrophic bacteria exhibited the greatest increase in response to a natural (deep water) treatment, but only a small increase in response to N and P addition, demonstrating the importance of additional substrates (most likely dissolved organic carbon) in moderating the heterotrophs. These data support previous observations that the microbial community response (autotrophy relative to heterotrophy) is critically dependent upon the nature of transient nutrient enrichment. © Inter-Research 2009
On the Kernel function of the integral equation relating lift and downwash distributions of oscillating wings in supersonic flow
This report treats the Kernel function of the integral equation that relates a known or prescribed downwash distribution to an unknown lift distribution for harmonically oscillating wings in supersonic flow. The treatment is essentially an extension to supersonic flow of the treatment given in NACA report 1234 for subsonic flow. For the supersonic case the Kernel function is derived by use of a suitable form of acoustic doublet potential which employs a cutoff or Heaviside unit function. The Kernel functions are reduced to forms that can be accurately evaluated by considering the functions in two parts: a part in which the singularities are isolated and analytically expressed, and a nonsingular part which can be tabulated
Dynamical Stability and Quantum Chaos of Ions in a Linear Trap
The realization of a paradigm chaotic system, namely the harmonically driven
oscillator, in the quantum domain using cold trapped ions driven by lasers is
theoretically investigated. The simplest characteristics of regular and chaotic
dynamics are calculated. The possibilities of experimental realization are
discussed.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev
Quantum Signatures of The Classical Disconnection Border
A quantum Heisenberg model with anisotropic coupling and all-to-all
interaction has been analyzed using the Bose-Einstein statistics. In
Ref.\cite{jsp} the existence of a classical energy disconnection border (EDB)
in the same kind of models has been demonstrated. We address here the problem
to find quantum signatures of the EDB. An independent definition of a quantum
disconnection border, motivated by considerations strictly valid in the quantum
regime is given. We also discuss the dynamical relevance of the quantum border
with respect to quantum magnetic reversal. Contrary to the classical case the
magnetization can flip even below the EDB through Macroscopic Quantum
Tunneling. We evaluate the time scale for magnetic reversal from statistical
and spectral properties, for a small number of particles and in the
semiclassical limit.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Dynamics of Open Bosonic Quantum Systems in Coherent State Representation
We consider the problem of decoherence and relaxation of open bosonic quantum
systems from a perspective alternative to the standard master equation or
quantum trajectories approaches. Our method is based on the dynamics of
expectation values of observables evaluated in a coherent state representation.
We examine a model of a quantum nonlinear oscillator with a density-density
interaction with a collection of environmental oscillators at finite
temperature. We derive the exact solution for dynamics of observables and
demonstrate a consistent perturbation approach.Comment: 7 page
Hamilton-Jacobi Formulation of KS Entropy for Classical and Quantum Dynamics
A Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the Lyapunov spectrum and KS entropy is
developed. It is numerically efficient and reveals a close relation between the
KS invariant and the classical action. This formulation is extended to the
quantum domain using the Madelung-Bohm orbits associated with the Schroedinger
equation. The resulting quantum KS invariant for a given orbit equals the mean
decay rate of the probability density along the orbit, while its ensemble
average measures the mean growth rate of configuration-space information for
the quantum system.Comment: preprint, 8 pages (revtex
