    One-variable word equations in linear time

    In this paper we consider word equations with one variable (and arbitrary many appearances of it). A recent technique of recompression, which is applicable to general word equations, is shown to be suitable also in this case. While in general case it is non-deterministic, it determinises in case of one variable and the obtained running time is O(n + #_X log n), where #_X is the number of appearances of the variable in the equation. This matches the previously-best algorithm due to D\k{a}browski and Plandowski. Then, using a couple of heuristics as well as more detailed time analysis the running time is lowered to O(n) in RAM model.     Development and evaluation of die materials for use in the growth of silicon ribbons by the inverted ribbon growth process, task 2, LSSA project

    Silicon sessile drop experiments were performed on a variety of commercially available refractory carbides, nitrides, oxides, and borides to examine the potential of these materials for applications involving either direct contact with molten silicon or as substrates for CVD coatings in the fabrication of dies and crucibles for containing molten silicon. Simultaneous experiments were also conducted with CVD layers of SiC, Si3N4, and SiOxNy. Silicon nitride layers, deposited with NH3:SiH4 ratios ranging from 100:1 down to 5:1, were examined in sessile drop experiments to determine if the layers are degraded as a result of using lower reagent ratios. Preliminary experiments were undertaken on the stability of CVD Si3N4 near the melting point of silicon. Silicon ribbon segments were grown from vitreous carbon dies which had been coated with CVD Si3N4. Depending upon the purity of the die materials, ribbon resistivity values up to 40 Omega cm were obtained

    The effects of the spontaneous presence of a spouse/partner and others on cardiovascular reactions to an acute psychological challenge

    The presence of supportive others has been associated with attenuated cardiovascular reactivity in the laboratory. The effects of the presence of a spouse and others in a more naturalistic setting have received little attention. Blood pressure and heart rate reactions to mental stress were recorded at home in 1028 married/partnered individuals. For 112 participants, their spouse/partner was present; for 78, at least one other person was present. Women tested with a spouse/partner present showed lower magnitude systolic blood pressure and heart rate reactivity than those tested without. Individuals tested with at least one nonspousal other present also displayed attenuated reactivity. This extends the results of laboratory studies and indicates that the spontaneous presence of others is associated with a reduction in cardiovascular reactivity in an everyday environment; spouse/partner presence would appear to be especially effective for women.\ud \u

    Compressed Subsequence Matching and Packed Tree Coloring

    We present a new algorithm for subsequence matching in grammar compressed strings. Given a grammar of size nn compressing a string of size NN and a pattern string of size mm over an alphabet of size σ\sigma, our algorithm uses O(n+nσw)O(n+\frac{n\sigma}{w}) space and O(n+nσw+mlogNlogwocc)O(n+\frac{n\sigma}{w}+m\log N\log w\cdot occ) or O(n+nσwlogw+mlogNocc)O(n+\frac{n\sigma}{w}\log w+m\log N\cdot occ) time. Here ww is the word size and occocc is the number of occurrences of the pattern. Our algorithm uses less space than previous algorithms and is also faster for occ=o(nlogN)occ=o(\frac{n}{\log N}) occurrences. The algorithm uses a new data structure that allows us to efficiently find the next occurrence of a given character after a given position in a compressed string. This data structure in turn is based on a new data structure for the tree color problem, where the node colors are packed in bit strings.Comment: To appear at CPM '1

    Living alone is a risk factor for mortality in men but not women from the general population: a prospective cohort study

    During the past decades a rising trend of living alone can be observed in the population especially in urban areas. Living alone is considered a psychosocial risk factor. We studied the relationship between living alone, cardiovascular risk factors and mortality. We analysed data from the population-based MONICA/KORA cohort study including 3596 men and 3420 women of at least one of three surveys carried out between 1984 and 1995 in the region of Augsburg, Germany. They were between 45 and 74 years old and were followed-up until 31 December 2002. During follow-up 811 men and 388 women died. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to examine the association between living alone and mortality

    Preliminary results of a feasibility study of the use of information technology for identification of suspected colorectal cancer in primary care: the CREDIBLE study

Available from Cancer Research UK/Nature Publishing Group via the DOI in this record.BACKGROUND: We report the findings of a feasibility study using information technology to search electronic primary care records and to identify patients with possible colorectal cancer. METHODS: An algorithm to flag up patients meeting National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) urgent referral criteria for suspected colorectal cancer was developed and incorporated into clinical audit software. This periodically flagged up such patients aged 60 to 79 years. General practitioners (GPs) reviewed flagged-up patients and decided on further clinical management. We report the numbers of patients identified and the numbers that GPs judged to need further review, investigations or referral to secondary care and the final diagnoses. RESULTS: Between January 2012 and March 2014, 19,580 records of patients aged 60 to 79 years were searched in 20 UK general practices, flagging up 809 patients who met urgent referral criteria. The majority of the patients had microcytic anaemia (236 (29%)) or rectal bleeding (205 (25%)). A total of 274 (34%) patients needed further clinical review of their records; 199 (73%) of these were invited for GP consultation, and 116 attended, of whom 42 were referred to secondary care. Colon cancer was diagnosed in 10 out of 809 (1.2%) flagged-up patients and polyps in a further 28 out of 809 (3.5%). CONCLUSIONS: It is technically possible to identify patients with colorectal cancer by searching electronic patient records.We acknowledge the General Practitioners, practice nurses, practice managers and administrative staff who supported this study, our trial co-ordinator Marie Crook, Anthony Ingold who was one of our patient representatives and MSDi for their support in developing the software algorithm.
