    Structural analysis consultation using artificial intelligence

    The primary goal of consultation is definition of the best strategy to deal with a structural engineering analysis objective. The knowledge base to meet the need is designed to identify the type of numerical analysis, the needed modeling detail, and specific analysis data required. Decisions are constructed on the basis of the data in the knowledge base - material behavior, relations between geometry and structural behavior, measures of the importance of time and temperature changes - and user supplied specifics characteristics of the spectrum of analysis types, the relation between accuracy and model detail on the structure, its mechanical loadings, and its temperature states. Existing software demonstrated the feasibility of the approach, encompassing the 36 analysis classes spanning nonlinear, temperature affected, incremental analyses which track the behavior of structural systems

    Transmon platform for quantum computing challenged by chaotic fluctuations

    From the perspective of many body physics, the transmon qubit architectures currently developed for quantum computing are systems of coupled nonlinear quantum resonators. A significant amount of intentional frequency detuning (disorder) is required to protect individual qubit states against the destabilizing effects of nonlinear resonator coupling. Here we investigate the stability of this variant of a many-body localized (MBL) phase for system parameters relevant to current quantum processors of two different types, those using untunable qubits (IBM type) and those using tunable qubits (Delft/Google type). Applying three independent diagnostics of localization theory - a Kullback-Leibler analysis of spectral statistics, statistics of many-body wave functions (inverse participation ratios), and a Walsh transform of the many-body spectrum - we find that these computing platforms are dangerously close to a phase of uncontrollable chaotic fluctuations.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Hydrodynamic attraction of swimming microorganisms by surfaces

    Cells swimming in confined environments are attracted by surfaces. We measure the steady-state distribution of smooth-swimming bacteria (Escherichia coli) between two glass plates. In agreement with earlier studies, we find a strong increase of the cell concentration at the boundaries. We demonstrate theoretically that hydrodynamic interactions of the swimming cells with solid surfaces lead to their re-orientation in the direction parallel to the surfaces, as well as their attraction by the closest wall. A model is derived for the steady-state distribution of swimming cells, which compares favorably with our measurements. We exploit our data to estimate the flagellar propulsive force in swimming E. coli

    Effects of buprenorphine on acute pain and inflammation in the adjuvant-induced monoarthritis rat model

    Background and aim: Animal modelling of arthritis is often associated with pain and suffering. Severity may be reduced with the use of analgesia which is, however, often withheld due to concerns of introducing a confounding variable. It is therefore important to design and validate pain relief protocols that reduce pain without compromising the scientific objectives. The present study evaluated the effect of buprenorphine analgesia in the immediate post-induction period of an adjuvant-induced monoarthritic rat model. The aim of this study was to extend previous work on refinement of the model by alleviating unnecessary pain. Methods: Male and female Sprague Dawley rats were injected with 20 μl of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the left ankle. Rats were treated with buprenorphine, either injected subcutaneously or ingested voluntarily, and were compared to rats given subcutaneous injections with vehicle (saline or pure nut paste) or carprofen the first three days post CFA-injection. Measurements of welfare, clinical model-specific parameters and pain-related behaviour were assessed. Results: Buprenorphine, administered either subcutaneously (0.10 or 0.15 mg/kg, twice daily) or by voluntary ingestion in nut paste (1.0 or 3.0 mg/kg, twice daily), improved mobility, stance, rearing and lameness scores significantly 7 h post CFA-injection. Mechanical hyperalgesia peaked at 7 h and was significantly lower in buprenorphine-treated animals, compared to vehicle-treated animals. Joint circumference was highest 24–72 h after CFA injection. Animals treated with buprenorphine did not decrease in joint circumference, opposite carprofen treated animals. Conclusion: Buprenorphine, administered either subcutaneously or by voluntary ingestion, provides adequate analgesia for both sexes within the first 24 h post CFA-injection. Buprenorphine treatment improved clinical scores and appeared not to suppress the inflammatory response. The present study supports previous findings that voluntarily ingested buprenorphine is an effective alternative to repeated injections
