    Morphotropic Phase Boundaries in Ferromagnets: Tb_{1-x}Dy_xFe_2 Alloys

    The structure and properties of the ferromagnet Tb_{1-x}Dy_xFe_2 (Terfenol-D) are explored through the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) separating ferroic phases of differing symmetry. Our synchrotron data support a first order structural transition, with a broadening MPB width at higher temperatures. The optimal point for magnetomechanical applications is not centered on the MPB but lies on the rhombohedral side, where the high striction of the rhombohedral majority phase combines with the softened anisotropy of the MPB. We compare our findings with single ion crystal field theory and with ferroelectric MPBs, where the controlling energies are different.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Light sensor platform based on the integration of Bacteriorhodopsin with a single electron transistor

    This paper reports on the integration of an optical protein with single electron transistors to form a nano-bio-hybrid device for sensing. Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) is an optoelectric protein that translocates a proton across a distance of several nanometers in response to an absorbed photon of incident light. This charge gradient results in a measurable voltage in the dried state. Single electron transistors (SETs) have active regions consisting of one or more quantum islands with a size typically 10 nanometers or less. Integrating bacteriorhodopsin with the gate of a SET provides a device capable of a modulated electrical output in response to optical modulation at the device gate. Modulation of the optoelectric activity of the bR by chemical binding with a targeted environmental antigen can form a direct chemical-to-electrical sensor reducing the size and complexity of fluorescence-based systems. The work resulted in electrical resistance and capacitance characterization of purple membrane containing bR under variable illumination to ensure minimal impact on SET operation. Purple membrane containing bacteriorhodopsin was electrodeposited on the SET gates, and current throughput was well correlated with variable and cyclic illumination.     Prediction of Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetes: An Analysis of the ACCORD Trial Applying Machine Learning Techniques

    Applying data mining and machine learning (ML) techniques to clinical data might identify predictive biomarkers for diabetic nephropathy (DN), a common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A retrospective analysis of the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial was intended to identify such factors using ML. The longitudinal data were stratified by time after patient enrollment to differentiate early and late predictors. Our results showed that Random Forest and Simple Logistic Regression methods exhibited the best performance among the evaluated algorithms. Baseline values for glomerular filtration rate (GFR), urinary creatinine, urinary albumin, potassium, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio were identified as DN predictors. Early predictors were the baseline values of GFR, systolic blood pressure, as well as fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and potassium at month 4. Changes per year in GFR, FPG, and triglycerides were recognized as predictors of late development. In conclusion, ML-based methods successfully identified predictive factors for DN among patients with T2DM

    Tax evasion and exchange equity: a reference-dependent approach

    The standard portfolio model of tax evasion with a public good produces the perverse conclusion that when taxpayers perceive the public good to be under-/overprovided, an increase in the tax rate increases/decreases evasion. The author treats taxpayers as thinking in terms of gains and losses relative to an endogenous reference level, which reflects perceived exchange equity between the value of taxes paid and the value of public goods supplied. With these alternative behavioral assumptions, the author overturns the aforementioned result in a direction consistent with the empirical evidence. The author also finds a role for relative income in determining individual responses to a change in the marginal rate of tax

    The in vitro loss of penicillamine in plasma, albumin solutions, and whole blood: Implications for pharmacokinetic studies of penicillamine

    The recent development of a high performance liquid chromatography assay method for the analysis of penicillamine in biological samples such as plasma, whole blood, and urine has provided a specific and sensitive assay method to aid in the study of penicillamine pharmacokinetics. Several investigators have reported measuring the plasma concentration of penicillamine. Some of these investigators have indicated that the plasma must be assayed immediately. However, such restrictions can limit the feasibility of a pharmacokinetic study. The results of this paper demonstrate the instability of penicillamine in plasma, albumin solutions, and whole blood. The rate of loss of penicillamine was shown to be influenced by the concentration of albumin. As a result of the significant loss of penicillamine over a short period of time, plasma or whole blood samples must be deproteinated immediately upon collection to avoid the loss of reduced penicillamine. Methods are presented for the preparation of biological samples so that the oxidation of penicillamine is prevented and the samples can be held for several days prior to analysis.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/23196/1/0000123.pd
