    Ethnic Fragmentation and Police Spending: Social Identity and a Public Good

    We present evidence that more ethnically fragmented communities spend, all else equal, more on police services than less fragmented communities. We introduce a model of spending on police services which we use to interpret the data. In this model, we assume that the decision to commit a crime is a rational consideration of the costs and benefits and that spending on police services reduces the attractiveness of committing a crime. We also assume that being a victim of crime affects a loss in utility. However this victimization cost, if victim and perpetrator are a different ethnicity, is greater than or equal to that if the perpetrator is the same ethnicity. A consequence of the model is that a higher level of spending on police services is associated with more ethnically fragmented communities only when agents suffer this differential cost of victimization. These results contribute to our understanding of the stylized fact that spending on police services is increasing at a time in which crime rates are falling. Further, our results provide empirical support for the contention that people have a larger cost of victimization when the perpetrator is a different ethnicity

    Biotic dynamics and carbonate microfacies of the conspicuous Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) 'Taljsten' interval, south-central Sweden

    Enclosed in the Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) part of the reddish 'orthoceratite limestone' of Baltoscandia is a conspicuous c. 1.5 m thick unit colloquially known as the 'Taljsten' interval. It has a wide geographical distribution in the Baltoscandian paleocontinent but is particularly well exposed in south-central Sweden. The unit is characterized by its deviant gray color and beds with a mass occurrence of cystoid echinoderms. Moreover, the recent discovery of an anomalous abundance of extraterrestrial chromite grains and micrometeorites in the 'Taljsten' and immediately adjacent strata bear witness of a time of deposition correlating to an increased influx of extraterrestrial matter to Earth. In this study we analyze the faunal dynamics, based primarily on microfossils and carbonate microfacies, across this intriguing interval. Generally known as a macrolithologically monotonous succession, the 'Taljsten' proved more heterogeneous than previously believed in terms of fossil content and preservation, as well as mineral content and composition. The general texture is wackestone/packstone, but local heterogeneities are frequent. A microfaunal reorganization occurred with a transition from a trilobite- and brachiopod-dominated community to one dominated by echinoderms, which is mirrored also macroscopically by the cystoids. The latter pelmatozoans seem to have flourished and might even have aided in the formation of the numerous hardgrounds. The increase in echinoderms is linked to a Volkhovian increase in echinoderms in eastern Baltica. In the immediate post-'Taljsten' strata there is no distinct change back to the pre-'Taljsten' biota. Conodont and ostracod faunal diversity data reveal peak values in the 'Taljsten' compared to the enclosing strata, suggesting that the paleoenvironment was more suitable for higher diversity faunas of these metazoan groups. All data collectively support a regression in the beginning of the 'Taljsten', likely followed by transgression in its upper part. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Lake secondary production fueled by rapid transfer of low molecular weight organic carbon from terrestrial sources to aquatic consumers

    P>Carbon of terrestrial origin often makes up a significant share of consumer biomass in unproductive lake ecosystems. However, the mechanisms for terrestrial support of lake secondary production are largely unclear. By using a modelling approach, we show that terrestrial export of dissolved labile low molecular weight carbon (LMWC) compounds supported 80% (34-95%), 54% (19-90%) and 23% (7-45%) of the secondary production by bacteria, protozoa and metazoa, respectively, in a 7-km2 boreal lake (conservative to liberal estimates in brackets). Bacterial growth on LMWC was of similar magnitude as that of primary production (PP), and grazing on bacteria effectively channelled the LMWC carbon to higher trophic levels. We suggest that rapid turnover of forest LMWC pools enables continuous export of fresh photosynthates and other labile metabolites to aquatic systems, and that substantial transfer of LMWC from terrestrial sources to lake consumers can occur within a few days. Sequestration of LMWC of terrestrial origin, thus, helps explain high shares of terrestrial carbon in lake organisms and implies that lake food webs can be closely dependent on recent terrestrial PP

    International audienceTremendous breakthroughs are being made in cancer drug discovery and development. However, such breakthroughs come at a high financial cost. At a time when there is increasing pressure on drug pricing, in part because of increased life expectancy, it is more important than ever to drive new therapeutics towards patients as efficiently as possible. In this review we discuss the applications of molecular imaging in oncology drug development, with a focus on its ability to enable better early decision making, to increase efficiency and thereby to lower costs
