Comment on "Optical Response of Strongly Coupled Nanopraticles in Dimer Arrays" (Phys. Rev. B 71(4), 045404, 2005)
I have re-calculated the extinction spectra of aggregates of two silver
nanospheres shown in Figs.~2 and 3 of Ref.~8. I have used the approximate
method of images according to Ref.~8 and an exact numerical technique. I have
found that the three sets of data (those I have obtained by the method of
images, the numerical results, and the results published in Ref.~8) do not
coincide. In this Comment, I discuss the reasons for these discrepancies and
the general applicability of the method of images to the quasi-static

High volumetric capacitance near insulator-metal percolation transition
A new type of a capacitor with a very high volumetric capacitance is
proposed. It is based upon the known phenomenon of a sharp increase of the
dielectric constant of the metal-insulator composite in the vicinity of the
percolation threshold, but still on the insulator side. The optimization
suggests that the metallic particles should be of nanoscale and that the
distance between planar electrodes should be somewhat larger than the
correlation length of the percolation theory and 10 to 20 times larger than the
size of the particles while the area of the electrodes might be unlimited. The
random electric field in the capacitors is found to be larger than the average
field corresponding to the potential difference of electrodes. This random
field is potentially responsible for dielectric breakdown. The estimated
breakdown voltage of the new capacitor shows that the stored energy density
might be significantly larger than that of electrolytic capacitors while the
volumetric capacitances might be comparable. The charging and discharging times
should be significantly smaller than corresponding times of batteries and even

Easy on that trigger dad: a study of long term family photo retrieval
We examine the effects of new technologies for digital photography on people's longer term storage and access to collections of personal photos. We report an empirical study of parents' ability to retrieve photos related to salient family events from more than a year ago. Performance was relatively poor with people failing to find almost 40% of pictures. We analyze participants' organizational and access strategies to identify reasons for this poor performance. Possible reasons for retrieval failure include: storing too many pictures, rudimentary organization, use of multiple storage systems, failure to maintain collections and participants' false beliefs about their ability to access photos. We conclude by exploring the technical and theoretical implications of these findings
Possible Observational Criteria for Distinguishing Brown Dwarfs from Planets
The difference in formation process between binary stars and planetary
systems is reflected in their composition as well as their orbital
architecture, particularly orbital eccentricity as a function of orbital
period. It is suggested here that this difference can be used as an
observational criterion to distinguish between brown dwarfs and planets.
Application of the orbital criterion suggests that with three possible
exceptions, all of the recently-discovered substellar companions discovered to
date may be brown dwarfs and not planets. These criterion may be used as a
guide for interpretation of the nature of sub-stellar mass companions to stars

Semi-classical twists for sl(3) and sl(4) boundary r-matrices of Cremmer-Gervais type
We obtain explicit formulas for the semi-classical twists deforming the
coalgebraic structure of U(sl(3)) and U(sl(4)). In rank 2 and 3 the
corresponding universal R-matrices quantize the boundary r-matrices of
Cremmer-Gervais type defining Lie Frobenius structures on the maximal parabolic
subalgebras in sl(n)

Singly generated quasivarieties and residuated structures
A quasivariety K of algebras has the joint embedding property (JEP) iff it is
generated by a single algebra A. It is structurally complete iff the free
countably generated algebra in K can serve as A. A consequence of this demand,
called "passive structural completeness" (PSC), is that the nontrivial members
of K all satisfy the same existential positive sentences. We prove that if K is
PSC then it still has the JEP, and if it has the JEP and its nontrivial members
lack trivial subalgebras, then its relatively simple members all belong to the
universal class generated by one of them. Under these conditions, if K is
relatively semisimple then it is generated by one K-simple algebra. It is a
minimal quasivariety if, moreover, it is PSC but fails to unify some finite set
of equations. We also prove that a quasivariety of finite type, with a finite
nontrivial member, is PSC iff its nontrivial members have a common retract. The
theory is then applied to the variety of De Morgan monoids, where we isolate
the sub(quasi)varieties that are PSC and those that have the JEP, while
throwing fresh light on those that are structurally complete. The results
illuminate the extension lattices of intuitionistic and relevance logics
Local anisotropy and giant enhancement of local electromagnetic fields in fractal aggregates of metal nanoparticles
We have shown within the quasistatic approximation that the giant
fluctuations of local electromagnetic field in random fractal aggregates of
silver nanospheres are strongly correlated with a local anisotropy factor S
which is defined in this paper. The latter is a purely geometrical parameter
which characterizes the deviation of local environment of a given nanosphere in
an aggregate from spherical symmetry. Therefore, it is possible to predict the
sites with anomalously large local fields in an aggregate without explicitly
solving the electromagnetic problem. We have also demonstrated that the average
(over nanospheres) value of S does not depend noticeably on the fractal
dimension D, except when D approaches the trivial limit D=3. In this case, as
one can expect, the average local environment becomes spherically symmetrical
and S approaches zero. This corresponds to the well-known fact that in trivial
aggregates fluctuations of local electromagnetic fields are much weaker than in
fractal aggregates. Thus, we find that, within the quasistatics, the
large-scale geometry does not have a significant impact on local
electromagnetic responses in nanoaggregates in a wide range of fractal
dimensions. However, this prediction is expected to be not correct in
aggregates which are sufficiently large for the intermediate- and

Delay and distortion of slow light pulses by excitons in ZnO
Light pulses propagating through ZnO undergo distortions caused by both bound
and free excitons. Numerous lines of bound excitons dissect the pulse and
induce slowing of light around them, to the extend dependent on their nature.
Exciton-polariton resonances determine the overall pulse delay and attenuation.
The delay time of the higher-energy edge of a strongly curved light stripe
approaches 1.6 ns at 3.374 eV with a 0.3 mm propagation length. Modelling the
data of cw and time-of-flight spectroscopies has enabled us to determine the
excitonic parameters, inherent for bulk ZnO. We reveal the restrictions on
these parameters induced by the light attenuation, as well as a discrepancy
between the parameters characterizing the surface and internal regions of the
