Group additive modeling of substituent effects in monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon radicals

    Get PDF
The thermodynamic properties of the unsubstituted and substituted phenyl, phenoxy, anisyl, benzoyl, styryl and benzyl radicals with six substituents (hydroxy, methoxy, formyl, vinyl, methyl, and ethyl) are calculated with the bond additivity corrected (BAC) post-Hartree-Fock G4 method. Bond dissociation energies of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are calculated and used to identify substituent interactions in these radicals. Benson's Group Additivity (GA) scheme is extended to aromatic radicals by defining 6 GAV and 29 NNI parameters through least squares regression to a database of thermodynamic properties of 369 radicals. Comparison between G4/BAC and GA calculated thermodynamic values shows that the standard enthalpies of formation generally agree within 4 kJ mol−1, whereas the entropies and the heat capacities deviate less than 4 J mol−1 K−1

In this study we set out to examine the impact of institutional support and macroeconomic policy on the growth performance of the agricultural sector in Nigeria Data on relevant variables were collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin 1970-2008 The data series were examined for unit roots and cointegration The series were characterized as 1 1 and are also cointegrated A model which relate the index of agricultural production to exogenous variables such as the volume of credit to the agricultural sector interest rate spread dummy for institutional reforms deficit financing were estimated using a cointegrating regression method The Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares option was used in our regression The results indicate that the volume of credit to the agricultural sector deficit financing income GDP and institutional reform Dum were positively and significantly accounted for innovations in agricultural output for the period studied The interest rate spread has a negative relationship with agricultural output growth but not significant The study recommends liberalized interest rate policy and enhanced institutional support to the agricultural secto

The early years of life are crucial to establishing a sound foundation for cognitive social emotional and physical development for the rest of children s lives Universal health coverage and nurturing care framework policies ensure holistic child care however many children in Siaya County seem to lack holistically child care in their education as we spend our energies on treatment rather than prevention services which are more cost effective The major question this study sought to respond to was How do preschools integrate universal health care services in early childhood education This is an action research design utilizing both quantitative and qualitative tools of data collection and is informed by humanizing child development theory as proposed by Eugene M De Robertis 2008 The participants for this project included 1400 preschool teachers Instruments of data collection included questionnaires for pre-school teachers interview schedule for teachers and document analysis of curriculum teacher preparation materials and health care records Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics while qualitative data utilized thematic analysis approac

Improving the accessibility of digital content via mobile technology. A case study of Mount Kenya University

Globally, Higher Education Institutions (HEI) have embraced the use of mobile technology in the delivery of instructional resources which has promised multiple benefits in digital or blended learning, HEIs are facing the challenge of high internet tariffs. The current study sought to improve the accessibility of digital content via mobile technology within limited Internet connectivity contexts. The study used a quantitative research approach within which a descriptive survey research design was adopted. The case study was Mount Kenya University in Kenya. The study was guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The target population was 15123 individuals comprising of 15,000 students and 123 were educators/ ICT staff who accessed digital content in the academic year 2018/2019. The mobile-based model used a WIFI router device which is not internet supported as an alternative to a wired internet connection where students and educators access digital content from the mobile sub-server which was not connected to the internet through their mobile technology. The findings showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between internet connectivity, type of mobile technology, user literacy, data caching, and eLearning policy had a significant effect on the accessibility of digital content. The variables were statistically significant. The adjusted R squared was 0.862 indicating that 86.2 percent of the total variation of accessibility of digital content can be explained by Internet connectivity, e-learning policy, type of mobile technology, data caching, and user literacy. The study then went ahead to develop a mobile-based e-learning model. The findings showed that the use of mobile-based e-learning (m-learning) in universities will greatly improve access to digital content and hence e-learning. The study recommends the use of m-learning as it will provide alternative means of optimizing Internet connectivity

MEETING THE INFORMATION NEEDS OF NURSES FOR EFFECTIVE HEALTHCARE DELIVERY IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE, OWERRI, IMO STATE

The study focused on meeting the information needs of Nurses for effective health care delivery in Nigeria with Federal Medical Centre, Owerri as case study and the area of study is South-East, Nigeria.. The descriptive survey method was used. The nominal roll of Federal Medical Centre,Owerri was used to derive the population of the study which is 300 and the sample of the study is 171. The questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The data collected was analysed using the simple percentages and tables. The findings of the study revealed that the nurses had need of information to care and manage patients as well as to improve their knowledge in clinical areas. Internet, Journals and books were the major sources consulted by nurses even though they still consult other medical database. The nurses are not satisfied with the information sources they consult. The factor militating against easy accessibility to health information among nurses include inadequate training of nurses in the use of information resources, lack of access to internet amongst others. Stocking of medical libraries with current materials on nursing as well as automation of health and medical libraries were identified as strategies for solving the problems of accessibility to health information. The study concludes that the medical libraries should carry out users study to enable them meet the information need of nurses

Anesthetic Management of Patients with Post COVID-19 Syndrome: A Quality Improvement Project

    Get PDF
Background: Millions of people have been infected with the novel Coronavirus 2019, creating a global pandemic. Despite the high mortality rate of this viral infection, millions of people have recovered, and are now presenting for surgical procedures with a history of COVID-19 infection. Residual effects of COVID-19 infection have been observed for several after diagnosis and are referred to as post COVID-19 syndrome. Post COVID-19 sequela can alter multisystem physiological processes that may alter anesthetic care throughout the perioperative period. Objectives: The purpose of this quality improvement project is to improve anesthesia provider knowledge on the management of patients who have post COVID-19 syndrome. Methods: The primary methodology of the proposed quality improvement project is to administer an educational intervention to anesthesia providers which discusses the management of patients undergoing elective surgery and have a history of COVID-19 infection. Pre- and post- assessment surveys will be used to measure the effectiveness of the educational intervention. Results: Overall, there was an improvement in anesthesia provider knowledge following the educational intervention. Participants also answered they would “always” or “often” consider additional pre-operative testing compared to “sometimes” prior to the educational intervention

School Personnel and Leadership Collaboration Model for Ideal Work Contexts

    Get PDF
This article describes the school personnel and leadership collaboration (SPLC) model, a shared-responsibility framework for faculty, staff, and administrators. Prior research consistently demonstrates the need for (a) administrative support for teachers and other school personnel and (b) collegial support among staff. The SPLC model represents an amalgamation of this research and, moreover, integrates personnel support for leadership. In the managerial sciences, leader–member exchange (LMX) is a well-known relationship-based leadership approach that focuses on a dyadic or two-way relationship between supervisors and their employees. Though managers are responsible for overseeing operations, personnel contribute ideas, participate in decision-making, and follow through with their responsibilities. LMX is associated with positive work experiences and job performance outcomes. In contrast, schools are often run with a top–down leadership approach that solicits little to no input from staff, leading to low morale, high attrition rates, and negative school climate. Thus, the SPLC model was inspired by LMX and emphasizes practices, such as shared decision-making, staff autonomy, and shared responsibilities. Detailed examples of ways schools may apply the SPLC model to their practices are included
