Moving To A District Balanced Literacy Program: A Change Leadership Plan

    Get PDF
Based upon the requirements of the No Child Left Behind mandate, schools that failed to achieve the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) designation for two consecutive years were required to implement a comprehensive school reform model. This change plan examined the movement from the comprehensive school reform model Success For All (SFA) to a balanced literacy framework within Harmony District 841. The framework advocated for balanced literacy instruction that supported the integration of authentic reading and writing experiences, application of literacy strategies and skills, implementation of a culturally relevant text, focus on professional development for teachers, and provision for effective instructional tools that support and nurture implementation with fidelity

Experience with a Pre-Series Superfluid Helium Test Bench for LHC Magnets

    Get PDF
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) under construction at CERN is based on the use of high-field superconducting magnets operating in superfluid helium. For the validation of the machine dipoles and quadrupoles, a magnet test plant is under construction requiring 12 so-called Cryogenic Feeder Units (CFU). Based on experience done at CERN, two pre-series CFUs were designed and built by industry and are currently in use prior to final series delivery. This presentation describes the features of a CFU, its typical characteristics and the experience acquired with the first units

Comparison Between Atmospheric Turbidity Coefficients of Desert and Temperate Climates

Knowledge of the solar radiation available on the earth’s surface is essential for the development of solar energy devices and for estimating of their performance efficiencies. For this purpose it is helpful to study the attenuation of direct normal irradiance by the atmosphere, in terms of fundamental quantities, including optical thickness, relative optical air mass, water vapor content, and aerosol amount. In the present article, we will not deal with cloudy atmospheres because of their great variability in space and time, but will focus our attention on atmospheres characterized by the complete absence of condensed water. The objectives of this article are to report data on aerosol optical depth and atmospheric turbidity coefficients for a desert climate, and to compare them with those of a temperate climate. Aerosol optical depth, the Linke turbidity factor, TL, and ngström turbidity coefficients, _, are calculated from measurements of broadband filters at Helwan, Egypt, which has a desert climate. A linear regression model is to be determined between the Linke factor and the ngström turbidity coefficient. This relation is compared with similar relations reported for a temperate climate [Prague, Czech Republic]. This comparison is made to determine whether a universal relation exists between these two important coefficients, or whether the relation is location dependent

PV cell angle optimization for energy generation-consumption matching in a solar powered cellular network

    Get PDF
An inherent problem of solar-energy-powered-smallcell base stations (SBSs) is that the energy generation of the photovoltaic (PV) cell does not match the energy consumption of the SBS in time. In this paper, we propose to optimize the PV cell orientation angle to achieve a good match between the energy generation and consumption profiles on a daily time scale. The optimization is formulated as an integer linear programming problem. We also derive an expression for the correlation between the energy generation and consumption profiles to evaluate their general interaction independent of the exact PV cell or SBS deployment setup. The numerical evaluation of the proposed angle optimization in a business area in London in summer/winter shows that the optimal PV cell orientation in summer contradicts the conventional assumption of south facing being optimal in the northern hemisphere. Instead, a southwest orientation should be chosen in summer due to its ability to shift the energy generation peak towards the energy consumption peak in the afternoon at a SBS in central London. This is in accordance with the prediction given by our derived correlation between the solar energy generation and consumption profiles

PF-15 Surgical Management for Medial Patellar Luxation with Trochlear Block Recession and Lateral Imbrication Methods in Labrador Retriever Dog

Medial patellar luxation is a displacement of the patella from the trochlear sulcus[1]. Medial patellar luxation is one of the common cause of lameness in small-breed dogs, but it also occurs in large-breed dogs[1]. This case report will reveal how to diagnose and treat medial patellar luxatio

Leiomyoma is a benign tumor arising from smooth muscle of hollow organs viz. uterus, vagina, intestines, stomach, urinary bladder and esophagus and is common in cow, dogs and fowl. Leiomyoma have slow-growing behaviour, localli invasive, malignant tumor of smooth muscle origin that typically is slow to metastasize4

Plant Physiology LEAF SHEATHS AND THE INHIBITION O F GERMINATION OF YOUNG AXILLARY BUDS IN SUGARCANE(')S(2)

ABSTRACT The younger parts of field-grown stalks of the sugarcane variety Co 205, with spindle included but with leaf blades trimmed back, were grown in distilled water in the dark. .When sheaths were left intact, few buds germinated; axillary shoots developed only from mature nodes. When sheaths were removed, many more buds germinated; axillary shoots developed from both older immature and mature nodes. The results, applied to normal stalk development, suggest that the sheath helps to control tillering. Germination of young bdds could, be inhibited by the sheath when the sheath is tight as around upper cylindrical nodes, but not when the sheath is loose as around lower obconic nodes at the base of the stalk
