    Ten species were found in a survey of the mosquitoes of the Burnaby Lake area; they included a small breeding population of <i>Aedes aloponotum</i>, a species not recorded in British Columbia since 1919. <i>Aedes aboriginis</i> was more numerous and troublesome. <i>Aedes sierrensis</i> and <i>Mansonia perturbans</i>, which bite both in the open and in houses, were less common, but because they are unaffected by the usual larval control techniques, are potential nuisance species in the area. <i>Aedes cinereus</i> and <i>Culiseta morsitans</i> were abundant, but the former bit only when disturbed and the latter did not bite humans

    A part of the importance of fats and oils derives from the functional properties that they confer to the foods. This is a consequence of their chemical nature and structural features. Lipids are relatively insoluble in water because their large non-polar region. However, they also contain groups with some degree of polarity. The combination of these polar and non-polar groups and their variations is what gives the range of functional properties observed and what made them so valuable. This issue of Grasas y Aceites reviews some of the functional properties of fats and oils. The Editors hope that the studies included will provide an state of the art reference volume of present knowledge and applications in these areas.La importancia de los aceites y grasas se deriva de la funcionalidad que los mismos pueden conferir, debido a sus características químicas y estructurales. Una propiedad clave de los lípidos es su relativa insolubilidad en agua, gracias a su larga región no polar. Sin embargo, los lípidos también contienen grupos con una cierta polaridad. La combinación de estas características de compuestos simultáneamente polares y no polares, así como los diferentes grados de las mismas que pueden encontrarse, son las que les confieren el amplio rango de propiedades funcionales que poseen y su extraordinario valor.     Detailed studies of wheat glutenin subunits have provided novel details of their molecular structures and interactions which allow the development of a model to explain their role in determining the visco-elastic properties of gluten and dough. The construction and analysis of near-isogenic and transgenic lines expressing novel subunit combinations or increased amounts of specific subunits allows differences in gluten properties to be related to the structures and properties of individual subunits, with potential benefits for the production of cultivars with improved properties for food processing or novel end user

    Factors affecting sorghum protein digestibility

    In the semi-arid tropics worldwide, sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is cultivated by farmers on a subsistence level and consumed as food by humans. A nutritional limitation to its use is the poor digestibility of sorghum protein when wet cooked. The factors affecting wet cooked sorghum protein digestibility may be categorised into two main groups: exogenous factors (grain organisational structure, polyphenols, phytic acid, starch and non-starch polysaccharides) and endogenous factors (disulphide and non-disulphide crosslinking, kafirin hydrophobicity and changes in protein secondary structure). All these factors have been shown to influence sorghum protein digestibility. More than one factor may be at play at any time depending on the nature or the state in which the sorghum grain is; that is whether whole grain, endosperm, protein body preparation, high-tannin or condensed-tannin-free. It is proposed that protein crosslinking may be the greatest factor that influences sorghum protein digestibility. This may be between ?- and ß-kafirin proteins at the protein body periphery, which may impede digestion of the centrally located major storage protein, a-kafirin, or between ?- or ß-kafirin and a-kafiri

    Returns to Skills and the Speed of Reforms: Evidence from Central and Eastern Europe, China, and Russia

    We explore the pace of increase in returns to schooling during the transition from planning to market over time across a number of Central and Eastern European countries, Russia, and China. We use metadata from 33 studies of 10 transition economies covering a period from 1975 through 2002. Our empirical model is an attempt to account for cross-section and over-time variation in rates of return as a function of the timing, speed, and volatility of reform processes as well as estimation methods used and sample characteristics. Our principal aim is to investigate the relative strength of two hypotheses: (1) the speed of economic transformation from planning to market represent the relaxation of legal, regulatory, and institutional constraints on wage-setting behavior, leading directly to adjustment returns to schooling to market rates; 2) the rapid increase in returns to schooling during the early reform period reflects the ability of highly-educated individuals to respond to changing opportunities in a disequilibrium situation. We find that both the speed of reforms and the degree of economic disequilibrium as reflected in macroeconomic volatility help to explain cross-country differences in the time paths of the returns to schooling.     Eliciting trade-offs between water charges and service benefits in Scotland. ESRI Working Paper No. 655 March 2020

    If it is the responsibility of a regulatory body to decide where to prioritise future investment, then it is important to understand the priorities of the citizenry it represents. This paper, in collaboration with the OECD and the Scottish water industry, presents the results of an online (n= 500) and face-to-face laboratory (n= 99) study that utilised experimental behavioural science to explore how Scottish citizens trade-off costs and potential improvements to their water service. Participants’ priorities for investment were elicited using a novel ‘slider task’ methodology that forced them to explicitly consider the trade-offs required to allocate limited resources across multiple possible water service improvements. The provision of additional cost and timing information was systematically varied. Results suggest that citizens are increasingly accepting of price rises when provided this information. Results also suggest that citizens’ priorities for specific improvements are not sensitive to the costs of different improvements but are sensitive to the lengths of time improvements take to be made. Findings from this study are designed to inform the regulatory process of the Scottish water industry and highlight the potential role of behavioural science in regulation more generally

    If an aim of a regulatory body is to act on behalf of the views of its citizenry, then it is important to understand what those views are. This paper, in collaboration with the OECD and the Scottish water industry, presents the results of an online (n= 500) and face-to-face laboratory (n= 100) study that utilised experimental behavioural science to explore how the provision and presentation of future price change information influences Scottish citizens’ acceptance of water price changes. Participants were asked to rate different patterns of price rises for their water charges. The pattern, presentation, magnitude of price rises and the provision of additional cost information (designed to simplify the calculations of future costs) was manipulated across tasks and participants. Results from this study suggest that Scottish citizens are generally accepting of price rises in the short and medium terms. However, the patterns of price rises, and the way in which information is presented, can influence these attitudes, suggesting that consumers do not always accurately integrate sequential price rises over time. Findings from this study are designed to inform the regulatory process of the Scottish water industry and highlight the potential role of behavioural science in regulation more generally

    Automation potential of a new, rapid, microscopy based method for screening drug-polymer solubility

    For the pharmaceutical industry, the preformulation screening of the compatibility of drug and polymeric excipients can often be time-consuming because of the use of trial-and-error approaches. This is also the case for selecting highly effective polymeric excipients for forming molecular dispersions in order to improve the dissolution and subsequent bio-availability of a poorly soluble drug. Previously, we developed a new thermal imaging-based rapid screening method, thermal analysis by structure characterization (TASC), which can rapidly detect the melting point depression of a crystalline drug in the presence of a polymeric material. In this study, we used melting point depression as an indicator of drug solubility in a polymer and further explored the potential of using the TASC method to rapidly screen and identify polymers in which a drug is likely to have high solubility. Here, we used a data bank of 5 model drugs and 10 different pharmaceutical grade polymers to validate the screening potential of TASC. The data indicated that TASC could provide significant improvement in the screening speed and reduce the materials used without compromising the sensitivity of detection. It should be highlighted that the current method is a screening method rather than a method that provides absolute measurement of the degree of solubility of a drug in a polymer. The results of this study confirmed that the TASC results of each drug-polymer pair could be used in data matrices to indicate the presence of significant interaction and solubility of the drug in the polymer. This forms the foundation for automating the screening process using artificial intelligence
