Evaluation of a FTIR Emission Measurement System for Legislated Emissions Using a SI Car
A series of chassis dynamometer test trials were
conducted to assess the performance of a Fourier
Transform Infra Red (FTIR) system developed for
on-road vehicle exhaust emissions measurements.
Trials used a EURO 1 emission compliant SI passenger
car which, alongside the FTIR, was instrumented to
allow the routine logging of engine speed, road speed,
throttle position, air-fuel ratio, air flow and fuel flow in
addition to engine, exhaust and catalyst temperatures.
The chassis dynamometer facility incorporated an
‘industry standard’ measurement system comprising
MEXA7400 gas analyzer and CVS bag sampling which
was the ‘benchmark’ for the evaluation of FTIR
legislated gas-phase emissions (CO, NOx, THC and
CO2) measurements.
Initial steady state measurements demonstrated strong
correlations for CO, NOx and THC (R2 of 0.99, 0.97
0.99, respectively) and a good correlation for CO2 (R2 =
0.92). Subsequent transient and total mass emissions
measurements from replicate samplings of four different
driving cycles (two standard cycles, FTP75 and NEDC,
and two novel cycles based on real-world data collected
in Leeds) also show good response of FTIR and
satisfied agreement between the FTIR and CVS bag
sampling measurements.
In general, the trial results demonstrate that the
on-board FTIR emission measurement system provides
reliable in-journey emissions data
Information Transfer Implies State Collapse
We attempt to clarify certain puzzles concerning state collapse and
decoherence. In open quantum systems decoherence is shown to be a necessary
consequence of the transfer of information to the outside; we prove an upper
bound for the amount of coherence which can survive such a transfer. We claim
that in large closed systems decoherence has never been observed, but we will
show that it is usually harmless to assume its occurrence. An independent
postulate of state collapse over and above Schroedinger's equation and the
probability interpretation of quantum states, is shown to be redundant.Comment: 13 page
Nonlocality of Two-Mode Squeezing with Internal Noise
We examine the quantum states produced through parametric amplification with
internal quantum noise. The internal diffusion arises by coupling both modes of
light to a reservoir for the duration of the interaction time. The Wigner
function for the diffused two-mode squeezed state is calculated. The
nonlocality, separability, and purity of these quantum states of light are
discussed. In addition, we conclude by studying the nonlocality of two other
continuous variable states: the Werner state and the phase-diffused state for

Real-world comparison of probe vehicle emissions and fuel consumption using diesel and 5 % biodiesel (B5) blend.
An instrumented EURO I Ford Mondeo was used to perform a real-world comparison of vehicle exhaust (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen) emissions and fuel consumption for diesel and 5% biodiesel in diesel blend (B5) fuels. Data were collected on multiple replicates of three standardised on-road journeys: (1) A simple urban route; (2) A combined urban/inter-urban route; and, (3) An urban route subject to significant traffic management. At the total journey measurement level, data collected here indicate that replacing diesel with a B5 substitute could result in significant increases in both NOx emissions (8-13%) and fuel consumption (7-8%). However, statistical analysis of probe vehicle data demonstrated the limitations of comparisons based on such total journey measurements, i.e., methods analogous to those used in conventional dynamometer/drive cycle fuel comparison studies. Here, methods based on the comparison of speed/acceleration emissions and fuel consumption maps are presented. Significant variations across the speed/acceleration surface indicated that direct emission and fuel consumption impacts were highly dependent on the journey/drive cycle employed. The emission and fuel consumption maps were used both as descriptive tools to characterise impacts and predictive tools to estimate journey-specific emission and fuel consumption effects
Implementation of the 64-meter-diameter Antennas at the Deep Space Stations in Australia and Spain
The management and construction aspects of the Overseas 64-m Antenna Project in which two 64-m antennas were constructed at the Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communications Complex in Australia, and at the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex in Spain are described. With the completion of these antennas the Deep Space Network is equipped with three 64-m antennas spaced around the world to maintain continuous coverage of spacecraft operations. These antennas provide approximately a 7-db gain over the capabilities of the existing 26-m antenna nets. The report outlines the project organization and management, resource utilization, fabrication, quality assurance, and construction methods by which the project was successfully completed. Major problems and their solutions are described as well as recommendations for future projects
'Better as a Buddhist': an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the reflections on the religious beliefs of Buddhist men serving a prison sentence for a sexual offence
This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the accounts offered by individuals (n=7) convicted of a sexual offence who describe themselves as Buddhists. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews within a custodial environment and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). This paper presents the two superordinate themes that emerged from the data: (i) Better as a Buddhist and (ii) Ebb and Flow. Reflections and analysis from the Buddhist prison chaplain are integrated within the analysis of prisoner-participant data. Implications of the analysis are discussed with reference to interventions that use Buddhist principles, factors that underpin factors that help reduce reoffending and those that fit with the formation of a desistance narrative for religious individuals who have committed sexual offences
Gravitational lens candidates in the E-CDFS
We report ten lens candidates in the E-CDFS from the GEMS survey. Nine of the
systems are new detections and only one of the candidates is a known lens
system. For the most promising five systems including the known lens system, we
present results from preliminary lens mass modelling, which tests if the
candidates are plausible lens systems. Photometric redshifts of the candidate
lens galaxies are obtained from the COMBO-17 galaxy catalog. Stellar masses of
the candidate lens galaxies within the Einstein radius are obtained by using
the -band luminosity and the color-based stellar mass-to-light ratios.
As expected, the lensing masses are found to be larger than the stellar masses
of the candidate lens galaxies. These candidates have similar dark matter
fractions as compared to lenses in SLACS and COSMOS. They also roughly follow
the halo mass-stellar mass relation predicted by the subhalo abundance matching
technique. One of the candidate lens galaxies qualifies as a LIRG and may not
be a true lens because the arc-like feature in the system is likely to be an
active region of star formation in the candidate lens galaxy. Amongst the five
best candidates, one is a confirmed lens system, one is a likely lens system,
two are less likely to be lenses and the status of one of the candidates is
ambiguous. Spectroscopic follow-up of these systems is still required to
confirm lensing and/or for more accurate determination of the lens masses and
