Privacy and data in students’ lives: a cultural shift in the US

Is it possible to have both privacy and protection of our rights, as digital consumers? Belinha de Abreu discusses the challenges that students, parents and educators in the US are currently facing. Belinha is a media literacy educator in Connecticut. Her research interests include media literacy education, new media, visual and information literacy, and teacher training. Developing digital citizenship in children aged from 3 to 9. A pilot project in the portuguese region of Odivelas

This paper focuses on the project «Digital Citizenship Education for Dem-ocratic Participation» (2015-2018), which centers on empowering children (aged 3 to 9) in three related contexts: family, school and community. We be-gan training 25 Preschool and Primary school teachers who developed digital media literacy activities involving 366 of their students. Activities focused on producing and discussing on media, online news analysis, communicating and learning through media and advertisement critical analysis. In March 2016, we began a longitudinal action research involving eight out of the 25 teachers who agreed to develop digital citizenship activities with their students. Parents and their children were interviewd on digital literacy practices and mediation, as well as the boards of local community entities dealing with children. Results showed that through professional development training, teachers were able to develop digital literacy activities without deviating from their previous peda-gogical plans.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Implication of amino acid metabolism in monocyte differentiation

Dissertação de mestrado em Ciências da SaúdeMonocytes are circulating blood leukocytes that arise from the bone marrow and are responsible for a wide array of homeostatic functions upon recruitment to different tissues. These phagocytes are able to mount an anti-microbial response, they are responsible for the production of a large array of cytokines and, importantly, they represent a pool of myeloid precursors that ultimately may originate tissue macrophages and dendritic cells. Recently, several reports have shed light on the relation between metabolism and immune function, which has been vastly explored in groundbreaking research on the field of immunometabolism. The development of a specific immune response relies on the accurate utilization of certain nutrients, thus determining distinct metabolic phenotypes and consequently distinct effector functions. Although several reports state the importance of the metabolic environment for the correct function of macrophages, little is known about the impact of amino acids during monocyte differentiation. We are interested in studying the metabolic requirements of human CD14+ monocytes derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells during differentiation in macrophage populations. The analysis of amino acid catabolism/anabolism by these populations, using high performance liquid chromatography, revealed distinct metabolic needs, depending on the differentiation profile. In order to assess the contribution of non-essential amino acids during differentiation, we cultivated the purified monocytes in conditioned media, where we selectively depleted L-aspartate. Moreover, the role of L-aspartate as a modulator of monocyte differentiation was assessed for several functional characteristics of macrophages such as phenotypical markers and other effector functions by flow cytometry. We observed that the differential availability of this amino acid during monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation impacts their final fate regarding function, thus showing a role for amino acid metabolism in the modulation of macrophage response.Os monócitos são leucócitos circulantes originários da medula óssea responsáveis por várias funções homeostáticas após recrutamento para diferentes tecidos. Estes fagócitos são capazes de desenvolver uma resposta anti-microbiana, produzir diversas citoquinas pró-inflamatórias e representam uma reserva de precursores mieloides, que podem eventualmente originar macrófagos tecidulares e células dendríticas. Recentemente, diversos trabalhos expuseram a relação entre o metabolismo e as funções imunes, um conceito que tem vindo a ser aprofundado na área do imunometabolismo. O desenvolvimento de uma resposta imune específica depende da correta utilização de certos nutrientes, o que por sua vez dita a existência de diferentes fenótipos metabólicos e, consequentemente, funções efetoras distintas. Apesar de diversos estudos demonstrarem a importância do microambiente metabólico para o desenvolvimento de uma função adequada dos macrófagos, pouco se sabe acerca do papel dos aminoácidos durante a diferenciação de monócitos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar os requisitos metabólicos de monócitos humanos CD14+, derivados de células mononucleares do sangue periférico, durante a sua diferenciação em populações macrofágicas. A análise do catabolismo/anabolismo de aminoácidos, através de cromatografia liquída de alta performance, revelou diferentes necessidades metabólicas, consoante o perfil de diferenciação induzido nos macrófagos. De forma a entender a contribuição dos aminoácidos não essenciais durante este processo, os monócitos foram purificados e cultivados em meios condicionados em que o L-aspartato foi seletivamente depletado. O papel deste aminoácido como modulador da diferenciação de monócitos foi avaliado através do estudo de várias características funcionais dos macrófagos, como os marcadores fenotípicos e outras funções efetoras, que foram avaliados por citometria de fluxo. Neste estudo foi possível observar que a biodisponibilidade deste aminoácido durante a diferenciação dos monócitos em macrófagos tem um impacto no seu perfil final, nomeadamente em termos de função, o que demonstra um novo papel do metabolismo de aminoácidos na modulação da resposta dos macrófagos

Elastoplastic Analysis of Plates with Radial Point Interpolation Meshless Methods

For both linear and nonlinear analysis, finite element method (FEM) software packages, whether commercial or in-house, have contributed significantly to ease the analysis of simple and complex structures with various working conditions. However, the literature offers other discretization techniques equally accurate, which show a higher meshing flexibility, such as meshless methods. Thus, in this work, the radial point interpolation meshless method (RPIM) is used to obtain the required variable fields for a nonlinear elastostatic analysis. This work focuses its attention on the nonlinear analysis of two benchmark plate-bending problems. The plate is analysed as a 3D solid and, in order to obtain the nonlinear solution, modified versions of the Newton–Raphson method are revisited and applied. The material elastoplastic behaviour is predicted assuming the von Mises yield surface and isotropic hardening. The nonlinear algorithm is discussed in detail. Alunos de Enfermagem e a espiritualidade associada aos cuidados de Enfermagem

Projeto de Graduação apresentado à Universidade Fernando Pessoa como parte dos requisitos para obtenção do grau de Licenciada em EnfermagemA prática da enfermagem continua a desenvolver e a adaptar-se às alterações das prioridades de saúde da sociedade. Os sistemas de prestação de cuidados de saúde, em constante mudança, oferecem aos profissionais de enfermagem novas oportunidades de modificar a conduta da enfermagem relativamente à espiritualidade e a como esta influência a prática de enfermagem. Assim sendo, e reconhecendo que a espiritualidade é intrínseca a todo o ser humano, verificável quando surge como necessidade, por isso, encontra-se inerente aos cuidados de enfermagem. Apesar de existir um aumento crescente da investigação neste âmbito, é necessário ter em conta a incerteza e a subjetividade, aquando da definição do conceito de espiritualidade, pelos enfermeiros, na sua prática clínica, desenvolveu-se o seguinte Projeto de Graduação, intitulado “Alunos de Enfermagem e a Espiritualidade Associada aos Cuidados de Enfermagem”. Neste sentido, a investigação desenvolvida visa alcançar respostas para as seguintes questões: “Será que os alunos de enfermagem da UFP frequentam alguma confissão religiosa? Qual?”; “Será que os alunos de enfermagem da UFP têm hábitos religiosos regulares ligados a religiosidade? Quais?”; “Qual será o entendimento que os alunos de enfermagem da UFP têm sobre a “espiritualidade”?”; “Será que os alunos de enfermagem da UFP consideram que a formação académica deve conhecer uma significativa componente relacionada com a “espiritualidade”?”; “Será que os alunos de enfermagem da UFP entendem que a “espiritualidade” esteve presente na sua formação académica?”; “Será que os alunos de enfermagem da UFP entendem que a “espiritualidade” deve estar presente nos cuidados de enfermagem?”; e, por fim, “Que sugestões terão os alunos de enfermagem da UFP para a abordagem da “espiritualidade” na licenciatura?”. Para a avaliação do domínio sobre esta temática, foi aplicado um questionário a alunos da Licenciatura em Enfermagem, da Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde, da Universidade Fernando Pessoa – Porto, tendo sido obtida uma amostra de 20 discentes. Os resultados obtidos, demonstram que os alunos da Licenciatura de Enfermagem, da Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde, da Universidade Fernando Pessoa (UFP) – Porto, presentes na amostra, têm divergentes opiniões sobre a problemática, o que pode ser influenciado pela vivência espiritual de cada indivíduo. Uma das sugestões, face aos resultados, é intervir ao nível da formação, no sentido de melhorar os cuidados de enfermagem, a todo e qualquer ser humano. The practice of nursing continues to evolve and adapt to changing health priorities of society. The systems that provide health care are changing, offering to nurses new opportunities to modify the practice of nursing to women and maternity and to improve the way care is provided. Therefore, recognizing that spirituality is intrinsic to every human being, as need arises when verifiable, so is inherent in nursing care. Although there is an increasing research in this area, it is necessary to take into account the uncertainty and subjectivity in the definition of the concept of spirituality by nurses in their clinical practice, developed the following Graduation Project, entitled "Students nursing and Spirituality Associated with nursing Care." In this sense, the research developped aims to achieve answers to the following questions: "Does the nursing students of UFP attend any religious denomination? What? "" Does the nursing students of UFP have regular religious habits linked to religiosity? Which? "" What will be the understanding that nursing students have the UFP about "spirituality"? "" Does nursing students of UFP consider that the academic must meet a significant component related to "spirituality"? ";" Does nursing students of UFP understand that "spirituality" was present in their academic training? ";" Does nursing students of UFP understand that "spirituality" should be present in nursing care? "and finally," What suggestions have nursing students of UFP for approaching "spirituality" in the degree? ". For the evaluation of the domain on this theme, a questionnaire was applied to students majoring in Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University Fernando Pessoa - Porto, having obtained a sample of 20 students. The results obtained, demonstrate that students of Degree in Nursing, of Faculty of Health Sciences, from University Fernando Pessoa (UFP) - Porto, present in the sample, have divergent opinions on the problematic, what can be influenced by spiritual living of each individual. One of suggestions, face to results, is to intervene at the level of training, in sense of improving nursing care, to each and any human being

Coincide esta edición de Jurídicas CUC con un momento de crucial importancia para el futuro del país. En La Habana, las comisiones negociadoras del Gobierno nacional y de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia –FARC- se encuentran en un momento culminante dentro de las conversaciones para la terminación definitiva del conflicto bélico que por más de 50 años ha desangrado al país. Luego de varios momentos de incertidumbre en los que, ya sea por las constantes arremetidas de las FARC (ataques a la infraestructura nacional, atentados ambientales, asesinatos de militares, etc.) o por las respuestas armadas del Gobierno, hemos estado ad portas del fracaso en las negociaciones sobre el armisticio, pareciera que a partir de la expedición del Comunicado conjunto No. 55 de julio 12 de 2015 por fin el camino se encuentra allanado para la celebración de un acuerdo definitivo que acabe con el vilo en el que se ha mantenido a la opinión pública nacional e internacional en los últimos meses. El citado comunicado que busca “agilizar en La Habana y desescalar en Colombia” supone que las partes sentadas a la mesa de negociación adopten las medidas necesarias para “llegar sin demoras a la firma del Acuerdo Final”, e igualmente, se comprometan a pactar “los términos de cese al fuego y de hostilidades bilateral, definitivo y con dejación de las armas, incluyendo un sistema de monitoreo y verificación”
