    A function-based typology for Earth’s ecosystems

    As the United Nations develops a post-2020 global biodiversity framework for the Convention on Biological Diversity, attention is focusing on how new goals and targets for ecosystem conservation might serve its vision of ‘living in harmony with nature’(1,2). Advancing dual imperatives to conserve biodiversity and sustain ecosystem services requires reliable and resilient generalizations and predictions about ecosystem responses to environmental change and management(3). Ecosystems vary in their biota(4), service provision(5) and relative exposure to risks(6), yet there is no globally consistent classification of ecosystems that reflects functional responses to change and management. This hampers progress on developing conservation targets and sustainability goals. Here we present the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Global Ecosystem Typology, a conceptually robust, scalable, spatially explicit approach for generalizations and predictions about functions, biota, risks and management remedies across the entire biosphere. The outcome of a major cross-disciplinary collaboration, this novel framework places all of Earth’s ecosystems into a unifying theoretical context to guide the transformation of ecosystem policy and management from global to local scales. This new information infrastructure will support knowledge transfer for ecosystem-specific management and restoration, globally standardized ecosystem risk assessments, natural capital accounting and progress on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

    Shear-wave splitting analysis of multi-offset coal VSPs in the Bowen Basin

    A shear-wave (S-wave) splitting analysis has been carried out on multioffset, shallow VSP data from the Gordonstone coal prospect in the Bowen Basin, Australia. In comparison to previous petroleum-scale investigations, the analysis is complicated by the short time window available for shear-wave analysis, and interference from preceding compressional-wave (P-wave) energy. A simple preprocessing scheme incorporates highcut filtering, as well as a two-stage coordinate orientation procedure, designed to enhance the shear wavefield for the subsequent splitting analysis. Several single-source algorithms for shear-wave splitting analysis are considered, with the primary aim being determination of the polarisation azimuth of the fast split shear wave. The results from two boreholes, whose shots were at large offsets, show good consistency between the different algorithms, and from shot to shot. Results from the third borehole studied are considered less reliable, especially for those shots having smallest offsets. The preferred fast shear-wave polarisation azimuth is 060°. This compares well with independent estimates of the direction of maximum horizontal compressive stress in the Bowen Basin. In general, the slow shear wavefield is poorly determined. However, hodogram analysis on some traces permits estimation of the time delay between fast and slow waves. These observations are consistent with a variation of approximately 2% between the fast and slow shear-wave velocities, indicating moderate development of azimuthal anisotropy

    The effect of context on performance of an acute medical unit: experience from an Australian tertiary hospital

    OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the improvements in length of stay and discharge rates following the opening of an acute medical unit (AMU). METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of all patients admitted under general medicine from June-November 2008. Main outcome measures were length of stay in hospital and in the emergency department (ED). RESULTS: The length of time spent in the emergency department for those admitted to the AMU was significantly shorter than those admitted directly to a medical ward (6.83h v. 9.40h, P<0.0001). A trend towards shorter hospital length of stay continued after the AMU opened compared with the same period in the previous year (5.15 days (2.49, 11.57 CI) v. 5.66 days (2.76, 11.52 CI)). However, the number of ward transfers for a patient and the need to wait for a nursing home bed or public rehabilitation affected length of stay much more than the AMU. CONCLUSION: An AMU was successful in decreasing ED length of stay and contributed to decreasing hospital length of stay. However, we suggest that local context is crucially important in tailoring an AMU to obtain maximal benefit, and that AMUs are not a 'one size fits all' solution

    Risk factors of sleep-disordered breathing in haemodialysis patients.

    BackgroundSleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is common in patients with kidney disease; but often underdiagnosed as it is infrequently assessed in clinical practice. The objective of this study was to assess the risk factors of SDB in haemodialysis patients, and to identify useful assessment tools to detect SDB in this population.MethodsWe used nocturnal oximetry, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and STOPBANG questionnaire to screen for SDB in haemodialysis patients. Presence of SDB was defined by Oxygen desaturation index (ODI≥5/h), and further confirmed by apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) from an in-laboratory polysomnography. Blood samples were collected prior to commencing a haemodialysis treatment.ResultsSDB was detected in 70% of participants (N = 107, mean age 67 years). STOPBANG revealed that 89% of participants were at risk of SDB; however, only 17% reported daytime sleepiness on the ESS. Of the participants who underwent polysomnography (n = 36), obstructive sleep apnoea was identified in 86%, and median AHI was 34.5/h. Oximetry and AHI results were positively correlated (r = 0.62, P = 0.0001), as were oximetry and STOPBANG (r = 0.48; PConclusionDialysis patients with a large neck circumference and anaemia are at risk of SDB; using nocturnal oximetry is practical and reliable to screen for SDB and should be considered in routine management of dialysis patients, particularly for those who demonstrate risk factors

    Immunohistochemical testing of conventional adenomas for loss of expression of mismatch repair proteins in Lynch syndrome mutation carriers: A case series from the Australasian site of the colon cancer family registry

    Debate continues as to the usefulness of assessing adenomas for loss of mismatch repair protein expression to identify individuals with suspected Lynch syndrome. We tested 109 polyps from 69 proven mutation carriers (35 females and 34 males) belonging to 49 Lynch syndrome families. All polyps were tested by immunohistochemistry for four mismatch repair proteins MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 and PMS2. Detailed pathology review was performed by specialist gastrointestinal pathologists. The majority of polyps (86%) were conventional adenomas (n=94), with 65 tubular and 28 tubulovillous adenomas and a single villous adenoma. The remaining 15 lesions (14%) were serrated polyps. Overall, loss of mismatch repair expression was noted for 78/109 (72%) of polyps. Loss of mismatch repair expression was seen in 74 of 94 (79%) conventional adenomas, and 4 of 15 (27%) serrated polyps from mismatch repair gene mutation carriers. In all instances, loss of expression was consistent with the underlying germline mutation. Mismatch repair protein expression was lost in 27 of 29 adenomas with a villous component compared with 47 of 65 adenomas without this feature (93 vs 73%; P=0.028). A strong trend was observed for high-grade dysplasia. Mismatch repair deficiency was observed in 12 of 12 conventional adenomas with high-grade dysplasia compared with 60 of 79 with low-grade dysplasia (100 vs 76%; P=0.065). We were unable to demonstrate a significant association between conventional adenoma size or site and mismatch repair deficiency. All (4/4 or 100%) of the serrated polyps demonstrating mismatch repair deficiency were traditional serrated adenomas from a single family. Diagnostic testing of adenomas in suspected Lynch syndrome families is a useful alternative in cases where cancers are unavailable. The overwhelming majority of conventional adenomas from mutation carriers show loss of mismatch repair protein expression concordant with the underlying germline mutation.     Indicative distribution maps for Ecosystem Functional Groups - Level 3 of IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology

    This dataset includes the current version of the indicative distribution maps and profiles for Ecosystem Functional Groups - Level 3 of IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology (v2.1). Please refer to Keith et al. (2020) and Keith et al. (2022). The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes for each functional group of ecosystems to enable any ecosystem type to be assigned to a group. Maps are indicative of global distribution patterns and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Most maps were prepared using a coarse-scale template (e.g. ecoregions), but some were compiled from higher resolution spatial data where available (see details in profiles). Higher resolution mapping is planned in future publications. We emphasise that spatial representation of Ecosystem Functional Groups does not follow higher-order groupings described in respective ecoregion classifications. Consequently, when Ecosystem Functional Groups are aggregated into functional biomes (Level 2 of the Global Ecosystem Typology), spatial patterns may differ from those of biogeographic biomes. Differences reflect the distinctions between functional and biogeographic interpretations of the term, “biome”
