Searching for Very High Energy Emission from Pulsars Using the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory
There are currently over 160 known gamma-ray pulsars. While most of them are
detected only from space, at least two are now seen also from the ground. MAGIC
and VERITAS have measured the gamma ray pulsed emission of the Crab pulsar up
to hundreds of GeV and more recently MAGIC has reported emission at
TeV. Furthermore, in the Southern Hemisphere, H.E.S.S. has detected the Vela
pulsar above 30 GeV. In addition, non-pulsed TeV emission coincident with
pulsars has been detected by many groups, including the Milagro Collaboration.
These GeV-TeV observations open the possibility of searching for
very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) pulsations from gamma-rays pulsars in the HAWC

Algebraic lattices achieve the capacity of the ergodic fading channel
In this work we show that algebraic lattices con- structed from error-correcting codes achieve the ergodic capacity of the fading channel. The main ingredients for our construction are a generalized version of the Minkowski-Hlawka theorem and shaping techniques based on the lattice Gaussian distribution. The structure of the ring of integers in a number field plays an important role in the proposed construction. In the case of independent and identically distributed fadings, the lattices considered exhibit full diversity and an exponential decay of the probability of error with respect to the blocklength
IoT in healthcare: A scientometric analysis
This paper reviews scientific articles and patents about Internet of Things (IoT) in healthcare. The aim is to explore both the domain of research and the one of practice simultaneously. We compare the annual growth, the country production, and the trend topics of publications and patents, by focusing on the most relevant themes concerning the IoT in the healthcare industry. The analysis started with the selection of the publications and patents for the period 2015–2020. Since this comparative analysis between scientometric data in healthcare is new, the findings of this study can represent the basis for future studies to determine novel research opportunities on IoT. The study provides scholars with a better understanding of IoT research in healthcare and simultaneously extends knowledge of entrepreneurship in this field. Practitioners may benefit from this review to understand new and underexplored opportunities
Algebraic lattice Codes achieve the capacity of the compound block-fading channel
We propose a lattice coding scheme that achieves the capacity of the compound block-fading channel. Our lattice construction exploits the multiplicative structure of number fields and their group of units to absorb ill-conditioned channel realizations. To shape the constellation, a discrete Gaussian distribution over the lattice points is applied. A by-product of our results is a refined analysis of the probability of error of the lattice Gaussian distribution in the AWGN channel
Multi-wavelength observations of 3FGL J2039.6-5618: a candidate redback millisecond pulsar
We present multi-wavelength observations of the unassociated gamma-ray source
3FGL J2039.6-5618 detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. The source
gamma-ray properties suggest that it is a pulsar, most likely a millisecond
pulsar, for which neither radio nor -ray pulsations have been detected
yet. We observed 3FGL J2039.6-5618 with XMM-Newton and discovered several
candidate X-ray counterparts within/close to the gamma-ray error box. The
brightest of these X-ray sources is variable with a period of 0.22450.0081
d. Its X-ray spectrum can be described by a power law with photon index
, and hydrogen column density cm, which gives an unabsorbed 0.3--10 keV X-ray flux of erg cm s. Observations with the Gamma-Ray Burst
Optical/Near-Infrared Detector (GROND) discovered an optical counterpart to
this X-ray source, with a time-average magnitude . The counterpart
features a flux modulation with a period of 0.227480.00043 d that
coincides, within the errors, with that of the X-ray source, confirming the
association based on the positional coincidence. We interpret the observed
X-ray/optical periodicity as the orbital period of a close binary system where
one of the two members is a neutron star. The light curve profile of the
companion star, with two asymmetric peaks, suggests that the optical emission
comes from two regions at different temperatures on its tidally-distorted
surface. Based upon its X-ray and optical properties, we consider this source
as the most likely X-ray counterpart to 3FGL J2039.6-5618, which we propose to

Star formation, quenching and chemical enrichment in local galaxies from integral field spectroscopy
Within the currently well-established ΛCDM cosmological framework we still lack a satisfactory un- derstanding of the processes that trigger, regulate and eventually quench star formation on galactic scales. Gas flows (including inflows from the cosmic web and supernovae-driven outflows) are con- sidered to act as self-regulatory mechanisms, generating the scaling relations between stellar mass, star formation rate and metallicity observed in the local Universe by large spectroscopic surveys. These surveys, however, have so far been limited by the availability of only one spectrum per galaxy. The aim of this dissertation is to expand the study of star formation and chemical abundances to resolved scales within galaxies by using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data, mostly from the ongoing SDSS- IV MaNGA survey.
In the first part of this thesis I demonstrate the ubiquitous presence of extended low ionisation emission-line regions (LIERs) in both late- and early-type galaxies. By studying the Hα equivalent width and diagnostic line ratios radial profiles, together with tracers of the underlying stellar popula- tion, I show that LIERs are not due to a central point source but to hot evolved (post-asymptotic giant branch) stars. In light of this, I suggest a new classification scheme for galaxies based on their line emission. By analysing the colours, star formation rates, morphologies, gas and stellar kinematics and environmental properties of galaxies with substantial LIER emission, I identify two distinct popula- tions. Galaxies where the central regions are LIER-like, but show star formation at larger radii are late types in which star formation is slowly quenched inside-out. This transformation is associated with massive bulges. Galaxies dominated by LIER emission at all radii, on the other hand, are red-sequence galaxies harbouring a residual cold gas component, acquired mostly via external accretion. Quiescent galaxies devoid of line emission reside in denser environments, which suggests environmental effects as a likely cause for the existence of line-less galaxies on the red sequence.
In the second part of this dissertation I focus on the study of resolved chemical abundances by characterising the gas phase oxygen and nitrogen abundance gradients in a large sample of star forming galaxies. I analyse the deviations from an exponential profile at small and large radii and the dependence of the gradients on stellar mass. These findings are interpreted in the context of the inside-out paradigm of disc growth. I then demonstrate the necessity of gas flows, which are responsible for the observed flattening of the metallicity and N/O ratio gradients at large radii. Finally, I present a case study based on one nearby galaxy (NGC 628), in which I combine IFS and cold gas data to derive a spatially resolved metal budget and estimate the mass of metals lost by the galaxy throughout its life- time. By using simple physically-motivated models of chemical evolution I infer the average outflow loading factor to be of order unity.STF
Nuclear data uncertainty quantification on PWR spent nuclear fuel as a function of burnup
Nuclear data uncertainty analysis on the spent nuclear fuel inventory was performed on the Takahama-3 NT3G23 assembly, where the sample SF95-4 was irradiated up to a burnup of approximately 36 GWd/ t according to the SFCOMPO benchmark. The cross-section covariance matrices stored in the ENDF/B-VIII.0, JEFF-3.3 and JENDL-4.0u evaluated nuclear data libraries were propagated with the stochastic sampling algorithms implemented in the SANDY code. A comparison of the concentration uncertainty differences obtained using data from the three libraries is reported. Similarities were found with the fuel composition uncertainty results obtained for the Calvert Cliffs MKP109 sample P SFCOMPO benchmark. Such a similarity was also found when comparing concentration uncertainties along the sample irradiation. Therefore, the main contributors to the concentration uncertainty of a number of nuclides were identified at different burnup levels in the two samples. To complement the similarity analysis, a correlation study of the concentration distributions predicted by the two models was performed. The reported results hint a dominance of the common uncertainty propagation mechanisms over the model differences in the determination of concentration uncertainty
The impact of Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor on Photoreceptor function and morphology
To assess the impact of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on photoreceptor function and morphology.
METHODS:
Impact was assessed in two models. In one, the endogenous expression of bFGF in photoreceptors was raised by sectioning one optic nerve of rats 3 to 4 weeks before study. In the other, bFGF was injected into the vitreous chamber in rats and cats. Retinal function was assessed from the electroretinogram (ERG), and retinal morphology was studied using DNA dyes, immunolabeling, and in situ hybridization.
RESULTS:
In both models of bFGF upregulation, the ERG b-wave was suppressed over a wide stimulus range and in light- and dark-adapted conditions. The a-wave was not suppressed by either procedure and at the brightest intensities was enhanced by both procedures. In nerve-sectioned eyes, outer retina appeared normal histologically, but levels of bFGF protein in the inner and outer nuclear layers were raised, whereas bFGF mRNA levels remained unchanged. In both models, levels of synaptophysin in the outer plexiform layer and of cytochrome oxidase in inner segments were raised in association with increases in bFGF protein levels.
CONCLUSIONS:
bFGF increased the ability of photoreceptors to respond to light but attenuated the transmission of this response to inner retinal cells, presumably by blocking the photoreceptor-bipolar synapse. If the expression of bFGF protein is upregulated in human photoreceptor dystrophies, it may contribute a reversible component to the loss of vision. The relationship between these actions of bFGF and its ability to protect photoreceptors from stress remains to be established

Abstract
Issue
The regional vaccination of Lazio (AVR) and the ASL vaccination registries(AVA) that feed it, have had to adapt to the directions of national vaccination registry. The ASL Roma 4 added other implementations.
Description of the Problem
L'AVA must, first of all, allow easy search of subjects, defaulters and vaccination coverage for various filters but it can also facilitate the recording and analysis activity.
Results
The provision of barcodes allows the prompt search of subjects, the check of tax code and AIC codes of vaccines. The digital signature of the privacy and consent forms and anamnesis, taken from the "Guide to contraindications to vaccinations" directly available, allows the elimination of the paper. The possibility to go directly to AVR allows the registration of vaccinations made in other ASL. In addition, the AVA allows the compilation of the adverse event reporting form and vaccine management. The link with the portal on the ASL website allows users to download the vaccination certificate. Important is the possibility to send SMS before vaccination deadlines or appointments. The SMART-SMS allows sending videos or photos and manage a short link (http://tiny.cc/XXX) to an information page on ASL website, as well as user response SMS, that can also directly change appointments.
Lessons
The dematerialization of the forms leds to a greater compliance with the procedures, a more accurate anamnesis and the streamling of the vaccination session, the SMS bring greater compliance of users and an increase in vaccination coverage. The use of mobile analytics tools allows monitoring of vaccination campaigns.
