Amelioration of The Dielectric Properties of Ceramic Insulators Using Nano-alumina

    Get PDF
Outdoor HV porcelain insulators face various environmental stresses that cause their degradation. Consequently, amelioration of their insulating properties becomes a target of recent researches to survive higher voltage levels. Investigating the impact of the addition of 0, 5, 10, and 15 wt. % nano- alumina (NA) on the dielectric and physical characteristics of porcelain materials at elevated sintering temperatures is the aim of this study. Porcelain specimens were synthesized from kaolin, feldspar, and quartz as available low-cost raw materials. The specimens were sintered at 1100, 1200, 1300, and 1400Β°C for 2 h. For some specimens, the microstructure and phases formed were identified using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The changes that occur upon heating (include melting, phase transition, sublimation, and decomposition) were identified by Differential Thermogravimetric Analysis. The dielectric strength, relative permittivity, and loss tangent of different samples were measured at a large scale of frequencies. Breakdown strength values of different samples were verified by applying the Finite Element Method. The best electrical and physical properties were achieved at 1300ΒΊC. At this temperature the porcelain sample containing 5 wt. % NA presented optimum physical characteristics as well as good insulating properties assent the feasibility of producing electro-technical porcelai

SME’s disinclination towards subcontracting in the public sector markets : an attributional perspective

    Get PDF
Purpose - This study aims to examine the causes of SME’ disinclination towards subcontracting in public sector markets. Previous studies have revealed that UK SMEs are reluctant to do business with the public sector through the subcontracting route, but the reasons for this lack of enthusiasm have not been widely researched. Design/methodology/approach- Drawing on semi-structured interviews with SMEs competing for public contracts in North West England, a qualitative study was performed, from which several themes emerged. Findings- The findings were synthesised into a framework underpinned by attribution theory, to portray situationally and dispositionally caused factors which were used to interpret SMEs behaviour. Originality- The paper contributes in a unique way to an emerging discourse on how subcontracting can facilitate the access of SMEs to government procurement spending. It adds to knowledge regarding the explanatory power of attribution theory– from its base in social psychology

Velocimetry, cooling and rotation sensing by cold-atom matterwave interferometry

Interferometric measurement of an atom’s velocity allows, by tailoring the impulse imparted by the matterwave-splitting laser pulses, a velocity-dependent force that cools an atomic sample. Differential measurement reveals the sample’s acceleration and rotation

Survey on intrusion detection systems based on deep learning

    Get PDF
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) have a significant role in all networks and information systems in the world to earn the required security guarantee. IDS is one of the solutions used to reduce malicious attacks. As attackers always changing their techniques of attack and find alternative attack methods, IDS must also evolve in response by adopting more sophisticated methods of detection. The huge growth in the data and the significant advances in computer hardware technologies resulted in the new studies existence in the deep learning field, including intrusion detection. Deep learning is sub-field of Machine Learning (ML) methods that are based on learning data representations. In this paper, a detailed survey of various deep learning methods applied in IDSs is given first. Then, a deep learning classification scheme is presented and the main works that have been reported in the deep learning works is summarized. Utilizing this approach, we have provided a taxonomy survey on the available deep architectures and algorithms in these works and classify those algorithms to three classes, which are: discriminative, hybrid and generative. After that, chosen deep learning applications are reviewed in a wide range of fields of intrusion detection. Finally, popular types of datasets and frameworks are discussed

Autophagy switches to apoptosis in prostate cancer cells infected with melanoma differentiation associated gene-7/interleukin-24 (mda-7/IL-24)

    Get PDF
MDA-7/IL-24 has noteworthy potential as an anticancer therapeutic because of its diversity of antitumor properties, its lack of toxicity toward normal cells and tissues, and its safety and efficacy as evidenced in a phase I clinical trial. In a recent study, we document that Ad.mda-7-induced ER stress and ceramide production leads to early autophagy that subsequently switches to apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells. During the apoptotic phase, the MDA-7/IL-24 protein physically interacts with Beclin 1 and this interaction might inhibit Beclin 1 function culminating in apoptosis. Conversely, Ad.mda-7 infection leads to calpain-mediated cleavage of the Atg5 protein that might also facilitate a biochemical switch from autophagy to apoptosis. Our recent paper reveals novel aspects of the interplay between autophagy and apoptosis that underlie the cytotoxic action of MDA-7/IL-24 in prostate cancer cells. These new insights into MDA-7/IL-24 action provide intriguing leads for developing innovative combinatorial approaches for prostate cancer therapy

Corporate Social Responsibility and Islamic Financial Institutions (IFIs): Management Perceptions from IFIs in Bahrain

    Get PDF
Islamic finance is gaining greater attention in the finance industry, and this paper analyses how Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) are responding to the welfare needs of society. Using interview data with managers and content analysis of the disclosures, this study attempts to understand management perceptions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in IFIs. A thorough understanding of CSR by managers, as evident in the interviews, has not been translated fully into practice. The partial use of IFIs’ potential role in social welfare would add further challenges in the era of financialisation

GT2004-53122 TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL FEASIBILITY OF GAS TURBINE INLET COOLING USING EVAPORATIVE FOGGING SYSTEM IN TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS IN OMAN

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT In this paper gas turbine power boost via inlet air evaporative fogging system is evaluated for power plants of 40 MW power output in two different locations in Sultanate of Oman. The cooling effect is quantified using evaporative cooling degree hour (ECDH) approach. The power output boost based on the month with the highest number of evaporative cooling degree hours reaches as high as 20% for both locations.. This is significant in view of the increased air conditioning load during summer months. It is found that the average net present value (NPV) of installing fogging system in Marmul is 4,622,018andinFahudis4,622,018 and in Fahud is 6,182,496. It is also found that the purchase and installation costs are paid back within the first six months of system operation and for later years, annual revenue of over $500,000 is generated

Tracking habitus across a transnational professional field

    Get PDF
The sociology of the professions has shied away from cross-national comparative work. Yet research in different professional jurisdictions emphasizes the transnational nature of professional fields. Further work is therefore needed that explores the extent to which transnational professional fields are characterized by unity or heterogeneity. To that end, this article presents the results of a qualitative interrogation of the habitus of partners in β€˜Big 4’ professional service firms across, primarily, five countries (Bangladesh, Canada, France, Spain and the UK). Marked differences are observed between the partner habitus in Bangladesh and the other countries studied in terms of entrepreneurial and public service dispositions. In turn, these findings highlight the methodological relevance of habitus for both the sociology of the professions and comparative capitalism literatures: for the former, habitus aids in mapping the dynamics of transnational professional fields; for the latter, habitus can elucidate the informal norms and conventions of national business systems
