    Abundances and kinematics of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo*; A new classification scheme based on Sr and Ba

    Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars span a wide range of stellar populations, from bona fide second-generation stars to later forming stars that provide excellent probes of, e.g., binary mass transfer. Here we analyse 11 metal-poor stars of which 10 are CEMP stars. Based on high signal-to-noise (SNR) X-Shooter spectra, we derive abundances of 20 elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Sr, Y, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu). From the high SNR spectra, we trace the chemical contribution of the rare earth elements (REE) from various production sites, finding a preference for metal-poor low-mass AGB stars of 1.5Mo in CEMP-s stars, while CEMP-r/s stars may indicate a more massive AGB contribution (2-5Mo). A contribution from the r-process - possibly from neutron star mergers (NSM), is also detectable in the REE abundances, especially in the CEMP-r/s. Combining spectra with Gaia DR2 astrometric data indicates that all but one star in our sample (and most literature stars) belong to the Galactic halo. They exhibit a median orbital eccentricity of 0.7, and are found on both pro- and retrograde orbits. The orbital parameters of CEMP-no and CEMP4s stars are remarkably similar in the 98 stars we study. A special CEMP-no star, with very low Sr and Ba content, possesses the most eccentric orbit among the stars in our sample, passing close to the Galactic centre. Finally, we propose an improved scheme to sub-classify the CEMP stars, making use of the Sr//Ba ratio, which can also be used to separate very metal-poor stars from CEMP stars in 93 stars in the metallicity range 4.2<-4.2<[Fe/H]<2<-2. The Sr/Ba ratio can also be used for distinguishing CEMP-s,-r/s and -no stars. The Sr/Ba ratio is also a powerful astro-nuclear indicator, as AGB stars exhibit very different Sr/Ba ratios, compared to fast rotating massive stars and NSM, and it is fairly unbiased by NLTE and 3D corrections.(abridged)Comment: 15 pages, 4 pages appendix, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to constrain cosmological models and the physics of dark energy.Comment: 596 pages.     ISSN exercise & sport nutrition review: research & recommendations

    Sports nutrition is a constantly evolving field with hundreds of research papers published annually. For this reason, keeping up to date with the literature is often difficult. This paper is a five year update of the sports nutrition review article published as the lead paper to launch the JISSN in 2004 and presents a well-referenced overview of the current state of the science related to how to optimize training and athletic performance through nutrition. More specifically, this paper provides an overview of: 1.) The definitional category of ergogenic aids and dietary supplements; 2.) How dietary supplements are legally regulated; 3.) How to evaluate the scientific merit of nutritional supplements; 4.) General nutritional strategies to optimize performance and enhance recovery; and, 5.) An overview of our current understanding of the ergogenic value of nutrition and dietary supplementation in regards to weight gain, weight loss, and performance enhancement. Our hope is that ISSN members and individuals interested in sports nutrition find this review useful in their daily practice and consultation with their clients

    2,4-Dinitrophenol does not exert neuro-regenerative potential in experimental autoimmune neuritis

    Objective: We evaluated the potential neuro-regenerative effects of the mitochondrial uncoupler 2,4-Dinitrophenol in experimental autoimmune neuritis, an animal model for an acute autoimmune neuropathy.Methods: Experimental autoimmune neuritis was induced in Lewis rats. Different concentrations of 2,4-Dinitrophenol (1 mg/kg, 0.1 mg/kg and 0.01 mg/kg) were applied during the recovery phase of the neuritis (at days 18, 22 and 26) and compared to the vehicle. Any effects were assessed through functional, electrophysiological, and morphological analysis via electron microscopy of all groups at day 30. Additional immune-histochemical analysis of inflammation markers and remyelination of the sciatic nerves were performed for the dosage of 1 mg/kg and control.Results: No enhancement of functional or electrophysiological recovery was observed in all 2,4-Dinitrophenol-treated groups. Cellular inflammation markers of T cells (CD3+) were comparable to control, and an increase of macrophages (IbA1+) invasion in the sciatic nerves was observed. Treatment with 2,4-Dinitrophenol reduced axonal swelling in myelinated and unmyelinated fibers with an increased production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor.Conclusion: Our findings do not support the hypothesis that repurposing of the mitochondrial uncoupler 2,4-Dinitrophenol exerts functionally relevant neuro-regenerative effects in autoimmune neuritis.Keywords: Autoimmune neuropathy; Brain-derived neurotrophic factor; Drug repurposing; Guillain-Barré syndrome; Mitochondrial uncoupler; Neuroregeneration

    Potentially inappropriate prescribing among older people in the United Kingdom

    BACKGROUND: Potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) in older people is associated with increases in morbidity, hospitalisation and mortality. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of and factors associated with PIP, among those aged ≥70 years, in the United Kingdom, using a comprehensive set of prescribing indicators and comparing these to estimates obtained from a truncated set of the same indicators. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), in 2007. Participants included those aged ≥ 70 years, in CPRD. Fifty-two PIP indicators from the Screening Tool of Older Persons Potentially Inappropriate Prescriptions (STOPP) criteria were applied to data on prescribed drugs and clinical diagnoses. Overall prevalence of PIP and prevalence according to individual STOPP criteria were estimated. The relationship between PIP and polypharmacy (≥4 medications), comorbidity, age, and gender was examined. A truncated, subset of 28 STOPP criteria that were used in two previous studies, were further applied to the data to facilitate comparison. RESULTS: Using 52 indicators, the overall prevalence of PIP in the study population (n = 1,019,491) was 29%. The most common examples of PIP were therapeutic duplication (11.9%), followed by use of aspirin with no indication (11.3%) and inappropriate use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) (3.7%). PIP was strongly associated with polypharmacy (Odds Ratio 18.2, 95% Confidence Intervals, 18.0-18.4, P \u3c 0.05). PIP was more common in those aged 70-74 years vs. 85 years or more and in males. Application of the smaller subset of the STOPP criteria resulted in a lower PIP prevalence at 14.9% (95% CIs 14.8-14.9%) (n = 151,598). The most common PIP issues identified with this subset were use of PPIs at maximum dose for \u3e 8 weeks, NSAIDs for \u3e 3 months, and use of long-term neuroleptics. CONCLUSIONS: PIP was prevalent in the UK and increased with polypharmacy. Application of the comprehensive set of STOPP criteria allowed more accurate estimation of PIP compared to the subset of criteria used in previous studies. These findings may provide a focus for targeted interventions to reduce PIP

    Production of glutathione sulfonamide and dehydroglutathione from GSH by myeloperoxidase-derived oxidants and detection using a novel LC–MS/MS method

    GSH is rapidly oxidized by HOCl (hypochlorous acid), which is produced physiologically by the neutrophil enzyme myeloperoxidase. It is converted into, mainly, oxidized glutathione. Glutathione sulfonamide is an additional product that is proposed to be covalently bonded between the cysteinyl thiol and amino group of the γ-glutamyl residue of GSH. We have developed a sensitive liquid chromatography–tandem MS assay for the detection and quantification of glutathione sulfonamide as well as GSH and GSSG. The assay was used to determine whether glutathione sulfonamide is a major product of the reaction between GSH and HOCl, and whether it is formed by other two-electron oxidants. At sub-stoichiometric ratios of HOCl to GSH, glutathione sulfonamide accounted for up to 32% of the GSH that was oxidized. It was also formed when HOCl was generated by myeloperoxidase and its yield increased with the flux of oxidant. Of the other oxidants tested, only hypobromous acid and peroxynitrite produced substantial amounts of glutathione sulfonamide, but much less than with HOCl. Chloramines were able to generate detectable levels only when at a stoichiometric excess over GSH. We conclude that glutathione sulfonamide is sufficiently selective for HOCl to be useful as a biomarker for myeloperoxidase activity in biological systems. We have also identified a novel oxidation product of GSH with a molecular weight two mass units less than GSH, which we have consequently named dehydroglutathione. Dehydroglutathione represented a few percent of the total products and was formed with all of the oxidants except H(2)O(2)
