    Attractor Metadynamics in Adapting Neural Networks

    Slow adaption processes, like synaptic and intrinsic plasticity, abound in the brain and shape the landscape for the neural dynamics occurring on substantially faster timescales. At any given time the network is characterized by a set of internal parameters, which are adapting continuously, albeit slowly. This set of parameters defines the number and the location of the respective adiabatic attractors. The slow evolution of network parameters hence induces an evolving attractor landscape, a process which we term attractor metadynamics. We study the nature of the metadynamics of the attractor landscape for several continuous-time autonomous model networks. We find both first- and second-order changes in the location of adiabatic attractors and argue that the study of the continuously evolving attractor landscape constitutes a powerful tool for understanding the overall development of the neural dynamics

    The effect of coupling circuits on impulsive noise in power line communication

    Abstract: Most researchers in the Power Line Communications (PLC) field have adopted the practice of using idealized impulse noise models directly at the input of the demodulator, as is widely done in simulations. The effect of the coupling circuit on the impulse noise tend to be ignored. However, coupling circuits produce transients. This paper focuses on investigating the effect of the coupling circuit on the impulse noise. Experimental measurements are used to determine the effect of the coupling circuit. An equivalent circuit of the coupling circuit is developed and further simulations are conducted to gain in-depth knowledge on how the impulse noise is affected by the coupling circuit. A literature survey suggests that this topic has not been studied yet

    Response of corn yields in a Planosol soil to surface drainage, cropping system and variable fertilizer treatments

    The Edina soil series of southeastern Iowa and northern Missouri are areas of relatively flat topography and poor internal drainage. For these areas, where the topography and soils permit, surface drainage is the most practical method of removing excess water from the land. One method of surface drainage that has been used on the Edina soils is bedding, in which the field is divided into narrow-width plow lands with the deadfurrows running parallel to the prevailing land slope. Little is known about the relative returns from investment in a bedding system in comparison with other surface or subsurface drainage methods. Bedding requires that some topsoil be moved to obtain the desired grade for drainage. The effect on crop yields of topsoil removal and movement in land-forming operations such as bedding, however, is not quantitatively understood.     Excitons in Electrostatic Traps

    We consider in-plane electrostatic traps for indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells, where the traps are formed by a laterally modulated gate voltage. An intrinsic obstacle for exciton confinement in electrostatic traps is an in-plane electric field that can lead to exciton dissociation. We propose a design to suppress the in-plane electric field and, at the same time, to effectively confine excitons in the electrostatic traps. We present calculations for various classes of electrostatic traps and experimental proof of principle for trapping of indirect excitons in electrostatic traps.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A Cluster-Randomised Trial of Staff Education to Improve the Quality of Life of People with Dementia Living in Residential Care: The DIRECT Study

    BACKGROUND: The Dementia In Residential care: EduCation intervention Trial (DIRECT) was conducted to determine if delivery of education designed to meet the perceived need of GPs and care staff improves the quality of life of participants with dementia living in residential care. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This cluster-randomised controlled trial was conducted in 39 residential aged care facilities in the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia. 351 care facility residents aged 65 years and older with Mini-Mental State Examination ≤ 24, their GPs and facility staff participated. Flexible education designed to meet the perceived needs of learners was delivered to GPs and care facility staff in intervention groups. The primary outcome of the study was self-rated quality of life of participants with dementia, measured using the QOL-Alzheimer's Disease Scale (QOL-AD) at 4 weeks and 6 months after the conclusion of the intervention. Analysis accounted for the effect of clustering by using multi-level regression analysis. Education of GPs or care facility staff did not affect the primary outcome at either 4 weeks or 6 months. In a post hoc analysis excluding facilities in which fewer than 50% of staff attended an education session, self-rated QOL-AD scores were 6.14 points (adjusted 95%CI 1.14, 11.15) higher at four-week follow-up among residents in facilities randomly assigned to the education intervention. CONCLUSION: The education intervention directed at care facilities or GPs did not improve the quality of life ratings of participants with dementia as a group. This may be explained by the poor adherence to the intervention programme, as participants with dementia living in facilities where staff participated at least minimally seemed to benefit.     Australian local governments and affordable housing: Challenges and possibilities

    © The Author(s) 2019. For an increasing proportion of Australian households, the Australian dream of home ownership is no longer an option. Neoliberal housing policy and the financialisation of housing has resulted in a housing affordability crisis. Historically, Australian housing policy has afforded only a limited role to local government. This article analyses the results of a nation-wide survey of Australian local governments’ perceptions of housing affordability in their local government area, the possibilities for their meaningful intervention, the challenges they face, the role of councillors and councils’ perceptions of what levels of government should take responsibility for housing. Almost all of the respondents from Sydney and Melbourne councils were clear that there is a housing affordability crisis in their local government area. We apply a framework analysing housing policy in the context of neoliberalism and the related financialisation of housing in order to analyse the housing affordability crisis in Sydney and Melbourne. We conclude that in order to begin resolving the housing crisis in Australia’s two largest cities there has to be an increasing role for local government, a substantial increase in the building of social and affordable housing and a rollback of policies that encourage residential property speculation.     Additive manufacturing towards product production: A bibliometric analysis

    Additively manufactured products offer extensive variety to consumers than many forms of production. Additive manufacturing (AM) production system allows consumer involvement, which has created a huge but largely untapped market. However, there is a gap between production and the market. Therefore, AM towards product production which focuses on the Commercialization of Additive Manufactured Products (CAMPs) is imperative. Despite the importance of CAMP, specific focus of research on the commercialization of additively manufactured products are scanty. There is also a lack of knowledge about the conceptual structure, intellectual structure, research trends, and the thematic structure of CAMP research. To contribute to this stream of research, this study takes an exploratory dimension by conducting a bibliometric analysis of publications on the CAMP. The R package and its associated biblioshiny were the software used. The study reveals that studies on CAMP started in 2007 with renewed interest starting from 2012. Importantly, it was found that the most cited articles focused on the economic potential of AM products in the home and specific industries. Also, there is an increasing focus on the business models that are necessary for the commercialisation of AM products. Generally, there is a shift in focus from the firm to the market. However, this is a niche area and requires more attention. Themes such as commercialization are just emerging, and researchers need to devote more time and effort to the consumer side of the commercialization of AM products

    Study to assess the effect of a structured communication approach on quality of life in secure mental health settings (Comquol): study protocol for a pilot cluster randomized trial

    Background Forensic mental health services have largely ignored examining patients’ views on the nature of the service offered to them. A structured communication approach (DIALOG) has been developed with the aim of placing the patient’s perspective of their care at the heart of the discussions between patients and clinicians. The effectiveness of the structured communication approach in community mental health services has been demonstrated but no trial taken place in a secure psychiatric setting. This pilot study is evaluating a six-month intervention combining DIALOG with principles of Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) on quality of life in medium secure settings. Methods/design A cluster randomized controlled trial design is being employed to conduct a 36 months pilot study. Participants are recruited from six medium secure in–patient services with 48 patients in the intervention group and 48 in the control group. The intervention uses a structured communication approach. It comprises of six meetings between patient and nurse over held once a month a six month period. During each meeting patients rate their satisfaction with a range of life and treatment domains with responses displayed on a tablet. The rating is followed by a discussion on how to improve the current situation in those domains identified by the patient. Assessments take place prior to the intervention (baseline), at 6 months (post intervention) and at 12 months (follow-up). The primary outcome is self reported Quality of Life. Discussion: The study aims to a) establish the feasibility of the trial design as the basis for determining the viability of a large full-scale trial, b) determine the variability of the outcomes of interest (quality of life, levels of satisfaction, disturbance, ward climate, and engagement with services) c) estimate the costs of the intervention and d) refine the intervention following the outcome of the study based upon the experiences of the nurses and patients. The intervention allows patients to have a greater say in how they are treated and targets care on areas that patients identify as important to them. It is intended to establish systems that support meaningful patient (and carer) involvement and participation.
