    ENTRAINMENT DURING BICYCLE ERGOMETRY IN ELITE CYCLISTS

    While it is widely accepted that ventilation increases abruptly at the onset of muscular exercise (D'Angelo and Torelli, 1971; Jensen, Vejby-Christensen and Petersen, 1972; Krogh and Lin~~ard, 1913) the control of the respiratory pattern, i.e., the relationship between ventilation (V', Vi', Ve'), tidal volume (Vt), and respiratory frequency (fR) or respiratory cycle times (Tt, Ti, Te) is not clearly understood (Wasserman, 1978). There are a number of factors, which may be classified as humoral, neurogenic, or neurohumoral, involved in respiratory regulation (Dejours, 1960), but the importance of any single factor is difficult to determine because of the associated problems of controlling for the other variables involved in the total response. One such factor is the coordination of the respiratory pattern to the movement pattern referred to as entrainment. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between the variables that control the respiratory pattern and to test the hypothesis that entrainment would be more prevalent in athletes who were highly trained for a particular mode of exercise, based on a work minimization theory (Priban and Fincham, 1965; Yamashiro and Grodins, 1973; Cherniack, 1980), than in non-athletes unaccustomed to the exercise

    Smart scalable ML-blockchain framework for large-scale clinical information sharing

    Large-scale clinical information sharing (CIS) provides significant advantages for medical treatments, including enhanced service standards and accelerated scheduling of health services. The current CIS suffers many challenges such as data privacy, data integrity, and data availability across multiple healthcare institutions. This study introduces an innovative blockchain-based electronic healthcare system that incorporates synchronous data backup and a highly encrypted data-sharing mechanism. Blockchain technology, which eliminates centralized organizations and reduces the number of fragmented patient files, could make it easier to use machine learning (ML) models for predictive diagnosis and analysis. In turn, it might lead to better medical care. The proposed model achieved an improved patient-centered CIS by personalizing the separation of information with an intelligent ”allowed list“ for clinician data access. This work introduces a hybrid ML-blockchain solution that combines traditional data storage and blockchain-based access. The experimental analysis evaluated the proposed model against the competing models in comparative and quantitative studies in large-scale CIS examples in terms of model viability, stability, protection, and robustness, with improved results

    Do Multinational enterprises push up wages of domestic firms in the Italian Manufacturing sector?

    This paper analyzes the effects of foreign direct investment on wages paid by domestic firms in the Italian manufacturing sector over the period 2002–2007. In particular, the authors investigate the im-pact of multinational enterprises on wages paid by local firms which operate in the same industry, known and horizontal wage spillovers, or have linkages with multinational enterprises in both downstream and upstream industries, known as vertical wage spillovers. By using a large panel dataset, consisting of 551,000 observations, the authors find evidence of wage spillovers only at inter-industry level and, more specifically, for those firms who supply their goods to multinational enterprises, described as backward wage spillovers. Moreover, findings suggest that the wage spillover effect is strongly affected by the technological gap between local and foreign firms: only workers employed in domestic firms with a low-medium technological absorptive capacity seem to benefit from the presence of multinational enterprises in terms of higher wages

    Residues of Antibiotics in Raw Honeys from Different Apiaries of Northern India and Evaluation of Human Health Risks

    Indiscriminate use of antibiotics in apicultural practices may lead to contamination of otherwise healthy and naturally produced honey. Contamination not only affects honey quality but also pose significant health risks to consumers. In this context, one hundred raw honey samples from India were analysed for presence of antibiotic residues. For determination of oxytetracycline and erythromycin, high performance liquid chromatography and for chloramphenicol, enzyme immunoassay based validated procedures were used. Oxytetracycline and erythromycin with concentrations above maximum tolerance limits were detected in 24% and 2% samples, respectively. None of the samples contained chloramphenicol residues. Although, total dietary intake of detected antibiotics through honey was found to be <1% of their acceptable daily intake values, the presence of antibiotics in honey is an alarming health concern for people following customary honey feeding. The outcomes underline the need of inter-sectoral approaches to create awareness among beekeepers regarding health risks associated with residues of antibiotics in honey and merits of approved apicultural practices. Therefore, to meet global food safety requirements, continual residue monitoring schemes along with enlightenment of beekeepers on scientific beehive management and risks associated with incautious apicultural practices are of vital importance

    Comparison of different methods for extraction and estimation of aflatoxin B1 in groundnut

    Aflatoxin extraction methods namely Best Food (BF), Contaminant Branch (CB), Pous’ and Romer’s and analytical methods namely thin-layer chromatography, spectrophotometric and minicolumn techniques, in different combinations, were compared for their efficiency for determining aflatoxin B1 occurring naturally in groundnuts and also for estimating aflatoxin B1 levels in groundnut meal samples spiked with known quantity of the toxin. The BF and Pons’ methods gave better efficiency than the other two methods. Spectrophotometric method was more effective than TLC and minicolumn techniques. BF method was found relatively less expensive and less time consuming as compared to other extraction methods. The Pons’ method was found convenient while handling large numbers of samples especially in the absence of centrifuge facilities required for the BF method

    Patterns of strain and the determination of the safe arc of motion after subscapularis repair—A biomechanical study

    This study characterizes the strain patterns and safe arcs for passive range of motion (ROM) in the superior and inferior subscapularis tendon in seven cadaveric shoulders, mounted for controlled ROM, after deltopectoral approach to the glenohumeral joint, including tenotomy of the subscapularis tendon 1 cm medial to its insertion on the lesser tuberosity. The tenotomy was repaired with end‐to‐end suture in neutral rotation. Strain patterns were measured during passive ROM in external rotation (ER), ER with 30° abduction (ER+30), abduction, and forward flexion in the scapular plane (SP) before and after surgery. Percentages were calculated from 35 trials corresponding to five trials of each motion across seven specimens. With ER of 0−30°, 89% of trials of superior subscapularis tendon and 100% of trials of inferior subscapularis tendon achieved strains >3%, with very similar patterns noted in ER+30. In abduction of 0−90°, 5.8% of trials of superior and 85.3% of trials of inferior tendon achieved >3% strain. With passive ROM in SP, 26.5% of trials reached 3% strain in superior tendon compared to 100% in inferior tendon. Strain patterns in abduction and SP differed significantly (p < 0.001). Selective tenotomy and repair of the superior subscapularis tendon with open reparative or reconstructive shoulder procedures, when feasible, may be favorable for protected early passive ROM and rehabilitation postoperatively. © 2015 Orthopaedic Research Society.     Lack of seroresponse to SARS-CoV-2 booster vaccines given early post-transplant in patients primed pre-transplantation

    SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are recommended pre-transplantation, however, waning immunity and evolving variants mandate booster doses. Currently there no data to inform the optimal timing of booster doses post-transplant, in patients primed pre-transplant. We investigated serial serological samples in 204 transplant recipients who received 2 or 3 SARS-CoV-2 vaccines pre-transplant. Spike protein antibody concentrations, [anti-S], were measured on the day of transplantation and following booster doses post-transplant. In infection-naĂŻve patients, post-booster [anti-S] did not change when V3 (1st booster) was given at 116(78-150) days post-transplant, falling from 122(32-574) to 111(34-682) BAU/ml, p=0.78. Similarly, in infection-experienced patients, [anti-S] on Day-0 and post-V3 were 1090(133-3667) and 2207(650-5618) BAU/ml respectively, p=0.26. In patients remaining infection-naĂŻve, [anti-S] increased post-V4 (as 2nd booster) when given at 226(208-295) days post-transplant, rising from 97(34-1074) to 5134(229-5680) BAU/ml, p=0.0016. Whilst in patients who had 3 vaccines pre-transplant, who received V4 (as 1st booster) at 82(49-101) days post-transplant, [anti-S] did not change, falling from 981(396-2666) to 871(242-2092) BAU/ml, p=0.62. Overall, infection pre-transplant and [anti-S] at the time of transplantation predicted post-transplant infection risk. As [Anti-S] fail to respond to SARS-CoV-2 booster vaccines given early post-transplant, passive immunity may be beneficial to protect patients during this period
