    Complex Physical Activities, Outdoor Play, and School Readiness among Preschoolers

    High quality educational settings play a crucial role in preparing a child to enter kindergarten, but little work has explored how outdoor play and complex physical activity outside school and childcare settings promote school readiness among preschoolers. To address this gap, the present study explored connections among school readiness with outdoor play and participation in complex physical activity. Parents (N = 107) reported the extent and frequency of time their child spent in outdoor play during a typical week, and what complex activities (e.g., soccer, biking, basketball) the child played over the last year. School readiness was assessed with parent reports on the Preschool Behavior and Emotional Rating Scale. Results showed participating in complex activities significantly moderated the relationship between time in outdoor play with school readiness, with time in outdoor play positively related to school readiness for children who participated in two or less complex activities. For children who participated in three complex activities, time in outdoor play was not related to school readiness. Findings offer support that encouraging both outdoor play and participation in complex physical activities could promote school readiness, particularly when opportunities for outdoor playtime are limited

    Concentrations of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB’s), Chlorinated Pesticides, and Heavy Metals and Other Elements in Tissues of Belugas, Delphinapterus leucas, from Cook Inlet

    Tissues from Cook Inlet beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, that were collected as part of the Alaska Marine Mammal Tissue Archival Project were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s), chlorinated pesticides, and heavy metals and other elements. Concentrations of total PCB’s (ΣPCB’s), total DDT (ΣDDT), chlordane compounds, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dieldrin, mirex, toxaphene, and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) measured in Cook Inlet beluga blubber were compared with those reported for belugas from two Arctic Alaska locations (Point Hope and Point Lay), Greenland, Arctic Canada, and the highly contaminated stock from the St. Lawrence estuary in eastern Canada. The Arctic and Cook Inlet belugas had much lower concentrations (ΣPCB’s and ΣDDT were an order of magnitude lower) than those found in animals from the St. Lawrence estuary. The Cook Inlet belugas had the lowest concentrations of all (ΣPCB’s aver-aged 1.49 ± 0.70 and 0.79 ± 0.56 mg/kg wet mass, and ΣDDT averaged 1.35 ± 0.73 and 0.59 ± 0.45 mg/kg in males and females, respectively). Concentrations in the blubber of the Cook Inlet males were significantly lower than those found in the males of the Arctic Alaska belugas (ΣPCB’s and ΣDDT were about half). The lower levels in the Cook Inlet animals might be due to differences in contaminant sources, food web differences, or different age distributions among the animals sampled. Cook Inlet males had higher mean and median concentrations than did females, a result attributable to the transfer of these compounds from mother to calf during pregnancy and during lactation. Liver concentrations of cadmium and mercury were lower in the Cook Inlet belugas (most cadmium values were <1 mg/kg and mercury values were 0.704–11.42 mg/kg wet mass), but copper levels were significantly higher in the Cook Inlet animals (3.97–123.8 mg/kg wet mass) than in Arctic Alaska animals and similar to those reported for belugas from Hudson Bay. Although total mercury levels were the lowest in the Cook Inlet population, methylmercury concentrations were similar among all three groups of the Alaska animals examined (0.34–2.11 mg/kg wet mass).     Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task and EF in two samples of adolescents in Brazil and United States

    Executive function (EF) is a foundational cognitive construct, which is linked to better cognitive and physical health throughout development. The present study examines the construct validity of an EF task, the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task (HTKS) that was initially developed for young children, in a sample of adolescents. We investigate the initial validity and range in scores between 54 adolescents from Brazil (mean age 12.58) and 56 US adolescents (mean age 12.48) from different socioeconomic contexts. Results indicated that the HTKS showed sufficient variability in both samples, especially for a measure of HTKS efficiency (completion time divided by the total score). The US sample performed better on all cognitive measures. For the Brazilian sample, regression models controlling for age and sex showed a significant relationship between the digit span working memory task, the HTKS total score, and the HTKS efficiency score. The Heart and Flowers cognitive flexibility measure was also included as an independent variable only for the Brazil sample, showing a significant relationship with both HTKS scores. For the US sample, results showed that only the HTKS efficiency score was significantly related to the digit span working memory task. This study highlights the importance of cognitive efficiency measures to achieve greater validity, as they can assess a broader range of performance with different populations. The HTKS showed good ecological validity with two adolescent samples, as it differentiated between populations with high and low socioeconomic status from different cultural contexts

    Are Thiel-embalmed Cadavers Effective Tools in Educating Medical Students to Perform Knee Arthrocentesis?

    INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this study are to determine whether Thiel-embalmed cadavers are an effective educational tool in teaching medical students to perform knee arthrocentesis, to compare the use of Thiel-embalmed cadavers to formalin-embalmed cadavers in arthrocentesis education, and to determine whether the use of Thiel-embalmed cadavers is potentially generalizable to the instruction of other orthopedic procedures. METHODS: Sixty-eight third-year medical students participated in the study. The participants first completed a pre-survey to assess their prior experience with arthrocentesis procedures and Thiel-embalmed cadavers. Participants then attended an instructional session where the knee arthrocentesis procedure was demonstrated on a Thiel-embalmed cadaver. Participants then individually performed the simulated knee arthrocentesis procedure twice: once on a Thiel-embalmed cadaver and once on a formalin-embalmed cadaver. Success of each attempt was determined through the visualization of aspirated joint fluid. Following the laboratory session, each participant completed a post-survey to determine whether the session improved their perceived confidence in performing knee arthrocentesis, if they preferred the use of Thiel-embalmed cadavers or formalin-embalmed cadavers as a teaching tool, and if they believed simulated practice using Thiel-embalmed cadavers would be effective for learning other orthopedic procedural skills. RESULTS: Sixty-eight students participated in the laboratory session and successfully completed both pre- and post-course surveys. 96% of participants reported that they felt confident performing knee arthrocentesis under physician supervision following their participation in the laboratory session (versus 15% of participants in the pre-survey). 96% of participants reported that the Thiel-embalmed cadavers provided a more realistic teaching model than formalin-embalmed cadavers for learning knee arthrocentesis. 100% of participants believed the incorporation of simulated practice using Thiel-embalmed cadavers is an effective method in teaching students to perform knee arthrocentesis. 100% of participants reported that they would participate in future sessions using Thiel-embalmed cadavers to learn and practice other orthopedic procedural techniques. DISCUSSION: This study used a moderate sample size of third-year medical students to provide data regarding the suitability of using Thiel cadavers in arthrocentesis education. Results indicate that Thiel cadavers are effective tools in teaching medical students to perform knee arthrocentesis, that students preferred the Thiel cadavers to the formalin cadavers, and that the use of Thiel cadavers is a safe, engaging, and high-quality teaching modality for demonstrating proper arthrocentesis procedural technique to medical students. Since this study looked specifically at teaching knee arthrocentesis to medical students, it is uncertain whether the benefits of Thiel cadavers are generalizable to the education of other orthopedic procedures and subject groups such as residents, fellows, and practicing physicians. Further studies should be performed to assess whether Thiel cadavers are beneficial in teaching other orthopaedic procedures and if these benefits extend to other subject groups

    Medicaid Expenditures on Psychotropic Medications for Children in the Child Welfare System

    Abstract Objective: Children in the child welfare system are the most expensive child population to insure for their mental health needs. The objective of this article is to estimate the amount of Medicaid expenditures incurred from the purchase of psychotropic drugs ? the primary drivers of mental health expenditures ? for these children. Methods: We linked a subsample of children interviewed in the first nationally representative survey of children coming into contact with U.S. child welfare agencies, the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW), to their Medicaid claims files obtained from the Medicaid Analytic Extract. Our data consist of children living in 14 states, and Medicaid claims for 4 years, adjusted to 2010 dollars. We compared expenditures on psychotropic medications in the NSCAW sample to a propensity score-matched comparison sample obtained from Medicaid files. Results: Children surveyed in NSCAW had over thrice the odds of any psychotropic drug use than the comparison sample. Each maltreated child increased Medicaid expenditures by between 237and237 and 840 per year, relative to comparison children also receiving medications. Increased expenditures on antidepressants and amphetamine-like stimulants were the primary drivers of these increased expenditures. On average, an African American child in NSCAW received 399lessexpenditurethanawhitechild,controllingforbehavioralproblemsandotherchildandregionalcharacteristics.ChildrenscoringintheclinicalrangeoftheChildBehaviorChecklistreceived,onaverage,399 less expenditure than a white child, controlling for behavioral problems and other child and regional characteristics. Children scoring in the clinical range of the Child Behavior Checklist received, on average, 853 increased expenditure on psychotropic drugs. Conclusion: Each child with child welfare involvement is likely to incur upwards of $1482 in psychotropic medication expenditures throughout his or her enrollment in Medicaid. Medicaid agencies should focus their cost-containment strategies on antidepressants and amphetamine-type stimulants, and expand use of instruments such as the Child Behavior Checklist to identify high-cost children.     vPIF-1 is an insulin-like antiferroptotic viral peptide

    Iridoviridae, such as the lymphocystis disease virus-1 (LCDV-1) and other viruses, encode viral insulin-like peptides (VILPs) which are capable of triggering insulin receptors (IRs) and insulin-like growth factor receptors. The homology of VILPs includes highly conserved disulfide bridges. However, the binding affinities to IRs were reported to be 200- to 500-fold less effective compared to the endogenous ligands. We therefore speculated that these peptides also have noninsulin functions. Here, we report that the LCDV-1 VILP can function as a potent and highly specific inhibitor of ferroptosis. Induction of cell death by the ferroptosis inducers erastin, RSL3, FIN56, and FINO2 and nonferroptotic necrosis produced by the thioredoxin-reductase inhibitor ferroptocide were potently prevented by LCDV-1, while human insulin had no effect. Fas-induced apoptosis, necroptosis, mitotane-induced cell death and growth hormone-releasing hormone antagonist-induced necrosis were unaffected, suggesting the specificity to ferroptosis inhibition by the LCDV-1 VILP. Mechanistically, we identified the viral C-peptide to be required for inhibition of lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis inhibition, while the human C-peptide exhibited no antiferroptotic properties. In addition, the deletion of the viral C-peptide abolishes radical trapping activity in cell-free systems. We conclude that iridoviridae, through the expression of insulin-like viral peptides, are capable of preventing ferroptosis. In analogy to the viral mitochondrial inhibitor of apoptosis and the viral inhibitor of RIP activation (vIRA) that prevents necroptosis, we rename the LCDV-1 VILP a viral peptide inhibitor of ferroptosis-1. Finally, our findings indicate that ferroptosis may function as a viral defense mechanism in lower organisms

    A practitioner concept of contemporary creativity

    This article reviews conceptualisations from three academic areas: the sociology of art, the psychology of creativity, and research on the cultural and creative industries. These are compared with findings from a critical discursive study with UK practitioners. The meanings and associations these ‘maker artists’ attach to creativity are discussed as a ‘practitioner concept’. For the practitioners, the association of creativity with art carries a promise of transcendence and escape from ordinary life, but also a potential challenge to their own entitlement and claims to a creative status. The article shows, first, that the academic areas utilise different and conflicting conceptualisations and, second, that the practitioner concept is not consistent with any one of these. The article argues that the contemporary celebration of creativity is based on different meanings and unacknowledged conflicts. The article proposes that future social psychological research on creativity requires a more critical approach to the concept

    A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to constrain cosmological models and the physics of dark energy.Comment: 596 pages.
