The origin of the E+ transition in GaAsN alloys
Optical properties of GaAsN system with nitrogen concentrations in the range
of 0.9-3.7% are studied by full-potential LAPW method in a supercell approach.
The E+ transition is identified by calculating the imaginary part of the
dielectric function. The evolution of the energy of this transition with
nitrogen concentration is studied and the origin of this transition is
identified by analyzing the contributions to the dielectric function from
different band combinations. The L_1c-derived states are shown to play an
important role in the formation of the E+ transition, which was also suggested
by recent experiments. At the same time the nitrogen-induced modification of
the first conduction band of the host compound are also found to contribute
significantly to the E+ transition. Further, the study of several model
supercells demonstrated the significant influence of the nitrogen potential on
the optical properties of the GaAsN system.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Feature Selection of Post-Graduation Income of College Students in the United States
This study investigated the most important attributes of the 6-year
post-graduation income of college graduates who used financial aid during their
time at college in the United States. The latest data released by the United
States Department of Education was used. Specifically, 1,429 cohorts of
graduates from three years (2001, 2003, and 2005) were included in the data
analysis. Three attribute selection methods, including filter methods, forward
selection, and Genetic Algorithm, were applied to the attribute selection from
30 relevant attributes. Five groups of machine learning algorithms were applied
to the dataset for classification using the best selected attribute subsets.
Based on our findings, we discuss the role of neighborhood professional degree
attainment, parental income, SAT scores, and family college education in

Functional Coefficient Estimation with Both Categorical and Continuous Data
We propose a local linear functional coefficient estimator that admits a mix of discrete and contin-uous data for stationary time series. Under weak conditions our estimator is asymptotically normally distributed. A small set of simulation studies is carried out to illustrate the finite sample performance of our estimator. As an application, we estimate a wage determination function that explicitly allows the return to education to depend on other variables. We find evidence of the complex interacting patterns among the regressors in the wage equation, such as increasing returns to education when experience is very low, high return to education for workers with several years of experience, and diminishing returns to education when experience is high. Compared with the commonly used para-metric and semi-parametric methods, our estimator performs better in both goodness-of-fit and in yielding economically interesting interpretation
The Elusive Costs of Sovereign Defaults
Few would dispute that sovereign defaults entail significant economic costs, including, most notably, important output losses. However, most of the evidence supporting this conventional wisdom, based on annual observations, suffers from serious measurement and identification problems. To address these drawbacks, we examine the impact of default on growth by looking at quarterly data for emerging economies. We find that, contrary to what is typically assumed, output contractions precede defaults. Moreover, we find that the trough of the contraction coincides with the quarter of default, and that output starts to grow thereafter, indicating that default episode seems to mark the beginning of the economic recovery rather than a further decline. This suggests that, whatever negative effects a default may have on output, those effects result from anticipation of a default rather than the default itself
Filling a blank on the map: 60 years of fisheries in Equatorial Guinea
Despite a scarcity of pertinent information, it has been possible to reconstruct time series of marine fisheries catches for Equatorial Guinea from 1950 to 2010 using per capita fish consumption and population numbers for small-scale fisheries, catch rates and number of vessels for industrial fisheries and discard rates to estimate the discarded bycatch. Small-scale fisheries, industrial large-scale fisheries, domestic and legal and illegal foreign fisheries and their discards are all included. Total catches were estimated at 2.7 million tonnes over the time period considered, of which 653 000 t were caught domestically compared to 187 000 t reported by FAO. This shows that fisheries have more importance for Equatorial Guinea's food security than the official data suggest. In contrast to what is suggested by official figures, fisheries were shown to be strongly impacted by civil and political unrest; notably, they declined overall because of civil and political conflicts, socio-demographic dynamics, and a growing role of the newly discovered oil resources, which directly and indirectly threaten the food security of the people of Equatorial Guinea
Molecular Epidemiology of Anthrax Cases Associated with Recreational Use of Animal Hides and Yarn in the United States
To determine potential links between the clinical isolate to animal products and their geographic origin, we genotyped (MLVA-8, MVLA-15, and canSNP analysis) 80 environmental and 12 clinical isolates and 2 clinical specimens from five cases of anthrax (California in 1976 [n = 1], New York in 2006 [n = 1], Connecticut in 2007 [n = 2], and New Hampshire in 2009[n = 1]) resulting from recreational handling of animal products. For the California case, four clinical isolates were identified as MLVA-8 genotype (GT) 76 and in the canSNP A.Br.Vollum lineage, which is consistent with the Pakistani origin of the yarn. Twenty eight of the California isolates were in the A.Br.Vollum canSNP lineage and one isolate was in the A.Br. 003/004 canSNP sub-group. All 52 isolates and both clinical specimens related to the New York and Connecticut cases were MLVA-8 GT 1. The animal products associated with the NY and CT cases were believed to originate from West Africa, but no isolates from this region are available to be genotyped for comparison. All isolates associated with the New Hampshire case were identical and had a new genotype (GT 149). Isolates from the NY, CT and NH cases diverge from the established canSNP phylogeny near the base of the A.Br.011/009. This report illustrates the power of the current genotyping methods and the dramatically different epidemiological conditions that can lead to infections (i.e., contamination by a single genotype versus widespread contamination of numerous genotypes). These cases illustrate the need to acquire and genotype global isolates so that accurate assignments can be made about isolate origins
Effect of the GaAsP shell on optical properties of self-catalyzed GaAs nanowires grown on silicon
We realize growth of self-catalyzed core-shell GaAs/GaAsP nanowires (NWs) on
Si substrates using molecular-beam epitaxy. Transmission electron microscopy
(TEM) of single GaAs/GaAsP NWs confirms their high crystal quality and shows
domination of the zinc-blende phase. This is further confirmed in optics of
single NWs, studied using cw and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL). A
detailed comparison with uncapped GaAs NWs emphasizes the effect of the GaAsP
capping in suppressing the non-radiative surface states: significant PL
enhancement in the core-shell structures exceeding 2000 times at 10K is
observed; in uncapped NWs PL is quenched at 60K whereas single core-shell
GaAs/GaAsP NWs exhibit bright emission even at room temperature. From analysis
of the PL temperature dependence in both types of NW we are able to determine
the main carrier escape mechanisms leading to the PL quench
