    Additions to the Checklist of the Illinois Spiders

    Five families and 140 species of spiders not included in former Illinois checklists are recorded. Two of these families, Antrodiaetidae and Scytodidae, and 40 of the species have been cited in earlier revisionary or other literature. The families Oonopidae, Symphytognathidae (slat.) and Ctenidae, and the remaining 100 species of spiders are recorded from Illinois for the first time. Locality data are given as counties only, and months of capture of mature specimens are presented. The total known spider fauna of Illinois now stands at 500 species in 27 families

    Rotor response for transient unbalance changes in a nonlinear simulation

    Transient unbalance shifts were determined not to excite a rotor instability in the high pressure turbomachinery of the Space Shuttle Main Engine using the current rotor dynamic models. Sudden unbalance changes of relatively small magnitudes during fast-speed ramps showed stable nonsynchronous motion depending on the resultant unbalance distribution at subsequent high speed dwells. Transient moment unbalance may initiate a limit cycle subsynchronous response that shortly decays, but a persistent subsynchronous with large amplitudes was never achieved. These limit cycle subsynchronous amplitudes appear to be minimized with lower unbalance magnitudes, which indicates improved rotor balancing would sustain synchronous motion only. The transient unbalance phenomenon was determined to be an explanation for synchronous response shifts often observed during engine tests

    Neutralising antibody response in domestic cats immunised with a commercial feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) vaccine

    Across human and veterinary medicine, vaccines against only two retroviral infections have been brought to market successfully, the vaccines against feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). FeLV vaccines have been a global success story, reducing virus prevalence in countries where uptake is high. In contrast, the more recent FIV vaccine was introduced in 2002 and the degree of protection afforded in the field remains to be established. However, given the similarities between FIV and HIV, field studies of FIV vaccine efficacy are likely to advise and inform the development of future approaches to HIV vaccination.<p></p> Here we assessed the neutralising antibody response induced by FIV vaccination against a panel of FIV isolates, by testing blood samples collected from client-owned vaccinated Australian cats. We examined the molecular and phenotypic properties of 24 envs isolated from one vaccinated cat that we speculated might have become infected following natural exposure to FIV. Cats vaccinated against FIV did not display broadly neutralising antibodies, suggesting that protection may not extend to some virulent recombinant strains of FIV circulating in Australia.<p></p&gt

    Listening to limericks: a pupillometry investigation of perceivers’ expectancy

    What features of a poem make it captivating, and which cognitive mechanisms are sensitive to these features? We addressed these questions experimentally by measuring pupillary responses of 40 participants who listened to a series of Limericks. The Limericks ended with either a semantic, syntactic, rhyme or metric violation. Compared to a control condition without violations, only the rhyme violation condition induced a reliable pupillary response. An anomaly-rating study on the same stimuli showed that all violations were reliably detectable relative to the control condition, but the anomaly induced by rhyme violations was perceived as most severe. Together, our data suggest that rhyme violations in Limericks may induce an emotional response beyond mere anomaly detection

    A Prospective Analysis of Pharmacists Integration in the Patient-Centered Medical Home: Preparing for Value-Based Care

    This is an unpublished manuscript of research completed in several patient centered medical homes that provide pharmacy services; presented at the 2016 American Pharmacists Association annual meeting in Baltimore, MD.Objective: The purpose of this project was to describe pharmacy services in a patient-centered medical home to demonstrate pharmacists’ involvement in the evolving delivery of primary care. Design: This was a prospective, qualitative study. Setting and Participants: This project analyzed the work of eight pharmacists employed at a National Committee for Quality Assurance tier III patient-centered medical home associated with a large, academic medical center. Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was to identify and quantify the types of services completed by pharmacists in a patient-centered medical home. Secondary outcomes included determining the percentage of pharmacist recommendations accepted by providers and patients, the percentage of pharmacist interventions submitted for third-party reimbursement, and the average time spent per encounter. Results: Eight pharmacists (representing 4.0 full-time equivalents) facilitated 581 encounters over 20 days. Mean time spent per encounter was 20 minutes (± 19). The most common types of encounters were interdisciplinary visits (31.8%) and phone/secure portal communication (30.0%). Of 918 pharmacist recommendations made to providers, 830 (90.4%) were accepted and implemented. Of 412 pharmacist recommendations made to patients, 393 (95.4%) were verbally accepted. Thirty-nine percent of encounters were eligible for direct payor billing. Conclusion: Our data show that pharmacists working in a patient-centered medical home are effectively integrated within the evolving delivery of primary care. Consistent inclusion of pharmacy services should be readily supported in future models of health care reform

    Genome-Wide Analysis of leafbladeless1-Regulated and Phased Small RNAs Underscores the Importance of the TAS3 ta-siRNA Pathway to Maize Development

    Maize leafbladeless1 (lbl1) encodes a key component in the trans-acting short-interfering RNA (ta-siRNA) biogenesis pathway. Correlated with a great diversity in ta-siRNAs and the targets they regulate, the phenotypes conditioned by mutants perturbing this small RNA pathway vary extensively across species. Mutations in lbl1 result in severe developmental defects, giving rise to plants with radial, abaxialized leaves. To investigate the basis for this phenotype, we compared the small RNA content between wild-type and lbl1 seedling apices. We show that LBL1 affects the accumulation of small RNAs in all major classes, and reveal unexpected crosstalk between ta-siRNA biogenesis and other small RNA pathways regulating transposons. Interestingly, in contrast to data from other plant species, we found no evidence for the existence of phased siRNAs generated via the one-hit model. Our analysis identified nine TAS loci, all belonging to the conserved TAS3 family. Information from RNA deep sequencing and PARE analyses identified the tasiR-ARFs as the major functional ta-siRNAs in the maize vegetative apex where they regulate expression of AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR3 (ARF3) homologs. Plants expressing a tasiR-ARF insensitive arf3a transgene recapitulate the phenotype of lbl1, providing direct evidence that deregulation of ARF3 transcription factors underlies the developmental defects of maize ta-siRNA biogenesis mutants. The phenotypes of Arabidopsis and Medicago ta-siRNA mutants, while strikingly different, likewise result from misexpression of the tasiR-ARF target ARF3. Our data indicate that diversity in TAS pathways and their targets cannot fully account for the phenotypic differences conditioned by ta-siRNA biogenesis mutants across plant species. Instead, we propose that divergence in the gene networks downstream of the ARF3 transcription factors or the spatiotemporal pattern during leaf development in which these proteins act constitute key factors underlying the distinct contributions of the ta-siRNA pathway to development in maize, Arabidopsis, and possibly other plant species as well

    Effect of age and surgical approach on perioperative wound complication following ovariohysterectomy in shelter-housed cats in Australia

    Objectives The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of age and/or surgical approach on perioperative wound complication following ovariohysterectomy (OHE). Methods A retrospective search of perioperative monitoring records from a shelter desexing program was conducted to identify cats that underwent OHE between 1 June 2010 and 31 December 2012 inclusive. A wound complication was defined as gross observation of inflammation or wound dehiscence at the surgical site in the 5 day postoperative period. Cases were grouped according to age (≀12 weeks or >12 weeks) and surgical approach (flank or midline). Stratified analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between surgical approach and wound complications, after adjusting for age. Mantel–Haenszel adjusted risk ratio, Cochran–Mantel–Haenszel test statistic and their 95% confidence intervals were presented. Results A total of 312 cases met the study criteria. The overall wound complication risk was low (6.09%) and was not related to age. A midline approach was associated with a 4.59-times increased risk of wound complication, compared with a flank approach in cats up to 12 weeks of age (P = 0.015) but not in older cats. Conclusions and relevance These findings support the practice of prepubertal desexing for cats.n/

    A “Dark Side” of Communication Avoidance: Indirect Interpersonal Aggressiveness

    Although our understanding of direct forms of verbal aggressiveness has been greatly advanced over the past decade, indirect interpersonal aggressiveness has remained relatively understudied. In the present study, items designed to tap indirect forms of interpersonal aggressiveness were written, administered to participants, factor analyzed along with verbal aggressiveness items, and correlated with a criterion measure. Results produced an internally consistent set of item which: (1) loaded on a separate factor from verbal aggressiveness items, (2) contributed unique variance over that accounted for by verbal aggressiveness in the prediction of psychoticism, a theoretically appropriate criterion variable for validating aggression measures, and (3) loaded on the same factor with verbal aggressiveness and psychoticism when second‐order factor analysis was conducted
