    Get PDF

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Microencapsulation of a whey protein hydrolysate within micro-hydrogels: Impact on gastrointestinal stability and potential for functional yoghurt development

    Get PDF
Gelatin and chitosan micro-hydrogels containing a potentially bioactive whey protein hydrolysate were developed through spray drying and the impact of microencapsulation on protection during digestion and peptide stability against lactic acid fermentation during yoghurt manufacturing was assessed. The results showed that the protection exerted by the encapsulation structures during milk fermentation was sequence- and matrix-dependent, being chitosan more effective than gelatin in stabilising the peptides. However, only 5 out of the 21 fermentation-susceptible peptides identified could be protected through encapsulation within chitosan (1 of which was also protected by gelatin). Moreover, the encapsulation within chitosan microparticles did not substantially affect the peptide profile of the digested hydrolysate, and therefore, the peptide bioaccessibility was not expected to be compromised.Laura G. Sonic Hedgehod y comportamiento de precursores neuroepiteliales

    Get PDF

The Role of Language in the Relationship between Emotion Comprehension and Theory of Mind in Preschool Children.

    Get PDF
For several decades, there has been an interest in understanding how Emotion Comprehension (EC) and Theory of Mind (ToM) are related during the preschool years. In addition, the links between language and ToM (Astington & Baird, 2005; Schick, de Villiers, de Villiers, & Hoffmeister, 2007) and language and EC (Cutting & Dunn, 1999; Hughes, White, & Ensor, 2014; Pons, Lawson, Harris, & de Rosnay, 2003) have been studied. Numerous studies have highlighted the important role played of language in ToM (Astington & Jenkins, 1999). For some authors, the specific properties of language are necessary for the development of ToM, and not only those related to age and neurological maturity (de Villiers & Pyers, 2002; Jackson, 2001; Remmel, Bettger, & Weinberg et al., 2001; Schick et al., 2007). Moreover, in recent years, evidence has been obtained about the relation between language and EC. Children with high scores in linguistic abilities show better EC (Cutting & Dunn, 1999; Pons et al., 2003; Ruffman, Slade, Rowlandson, Rumsey, & Garnham, 2003). Various studies show an important relation between EC and early conversations between adults and children. Thus, the frequency, style, and content of the discourse between parents and children, including emotional references and explanations, are positively related to EC in children (Beck, Kumschick, Eid, & Klann-Delius, 2012).post-print542 K

Protein Profile and Simulated Digestive Behavior of Breast Milk from Overweight and Normal Weight Mothers

    Get PDF
Human milk proteins have shown to vary in concentration and distribution through lactation. However, while some regulatory components, such as hormones, have shown associations with regard to the mothers’ body mass index, there is limited information on the possible influence of this condition on the whole protein distribution. The objective of this study was to evaluate the protein profile of human milk from normal weight and overweight or obese mothers to identify differences in protein expression in colostrum, transitional and mature milk. The mass spectrometry analysis showed the ability to class with a high degree of confidence the lactation state and the milk profile according to the mother’s condition. Individual milk samples were subjected to a digestion in vitro model that takes into account the specificities of the gastrointestinal conditions of full-term newborn infants. The digestion products were compared with available data from the digestive contents in newborns. The behavior of the most abundant proteins and the overall peptide generation and survival, showed good correspondence with in vivo data.PID2019-107663RB-I00 from Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN)FPU grant (FPU15-04549) from the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport

Whole rumen metagenome sequencing allows classifying and predicting feed efficiency and intake levels in cattle

    Get PDF
The current research was carried out to determine the associations between the rumen microbiota and traits related with feed efficiency in a Holstein cattle population (n = 30) using whole metagenome sequencing. Improving feed efficiency (FE) is important for a more sustainable livestock production. The variability for the efficiency of feed utilization in ruminants is partially controlled by the gastrointestinal microbiota. Modulating the microbiota composition can promote a more sustainable and efficient livestock. This study revealed that most efficient cows had larger relative abundance of Bacteroidetes (P = 0.041) and Prevotella (P = 0.003), while lower, but non-significant (P = 0.119), relative abundance of Firmicutes. Methanobacteria (P = 0.004) and Methanobrevibacter (P = 0.003) were also less abundant in the high-efficiency cows. A de novo metagenome assembly was carried out using de Bruijn graphs in MEGAHIT resulting in 496,375 contigs. An agnostic pre-selection of microbial contigs allowed high classification accuracy for FE and intake levels using hierarchical classification. These microbial contigs were also able to predict FE and intake levels with accuracy of 0.19 and 0.39, respectively, in an independent population (n = 31). Nonetheless, a larger potential accuracy up to 0.69 was foreseen in this study for datasets that allowed a larger statistical power. Enrichment analyses showed that genes within these contigs were mainly involved in fatty acids and cellulose degradation pathways. The findings indicated that there are differences between the microbiota compositions of high and low-efficiency animals both at the taxonomical and gene levels. These differences are even more evident in terms of intake levels. Some of these differences remain even between populations under different diets and environments, and can provide information on the feed utilization performance without information on the individual intake level.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This activity has been designed in the context of an innovation project devoted to the coordination on mathematical, physical, and engineering contents for a transversal path on mechatronics, automated control and information and communication technologies (from now onwards AGROMECATIC) at agricultural engineering studies in the Technical University of Madrid. One of the main tasks has consisted on setting up a new subject, robotics in agriculture (equivalent to 7 ECTS), which is used as a platform to test the abilities of the students to apply various aspects of the knowledge gathered along the previous 4 years on agricultural engineering, with special emphasis on. The students are demanded to build a variety of basic mechanisms into an autonomous vehicle capable of performing user defined general and specific agricultural tasks (such as selective harvest, transport, loading and unloading of product). The robot is programmed using object oriented language (LEJOS, JAVA for LEGO) and has to cover a variety of behaviors: navigation, exploration, and previous defined agricultural tasks. As a mean to test the skills developed by the students and to reinforce the multidisciplinary nature of AGROMECATICS, a European contest: AGROTECH09 has been settled, which is co-organized by BEST (Board of European Students of Technology). The activity will take place between the 11 th and 14 th of May at ETSI Agrónomos and recognizes up to 2 ECTS of individual dedication. 40 students from 16 countries with large variability of backgrounds: computers science, agronomy, engineering, physics, tele-communication will work jointly to solve a challenge which will be public on the 11 th of May with all materials being provided by the organization
