    Este artículo investiga cómo los periódicos de la Restauración utilizaron modos epistolares como medio para afrontar su propia condición de ficcional. En los dos estudios de casos, el Athenian Mercury de John Dunton y el Gentleman’s Journal de Peter Motteux, el análisis demuestra que estos periódicos se apoyan en la supuesta fiabilidad de la escritura epistolar para minar la aparente veracidad asociada a este formato. En ambas publicaciones, las cartas se utilizaron para socavar la supuesta facticidad de la carta, combinando guiños metafictivos con una comprensión lúdica y altamente performativa de las identidades de género. El cuerpo (y su género) de quienes participan en estas comunicaciones epistolares resulta un espacio de especulación a medida que las cartas se van convirtiendo progresivamente en cuerpos cuestionables de fiabilidad.This article investigates how Restoration periodicals employed epistolary modes as a means to address their own status of fictionality. In two case studies, of John Dunton’s Athenian Mercury and Peter Motteux’s Gentleman’s Journal, the discussion demonstrates how these periodicals make use of the supposed reliability of epistolary writing in order to undermine the truth-claims that attach to the format. In both instances, letters are employed to undermine the supposed factuality of the letter, combining such metafictional gestures with a playful and highly performative understanding of gendered identities. The gendered body of the people involved in these epistolary communications becomes a site of speculation as the letters increasingly turn into questionable bodies of reliability

    Split Options for 5G Radio Access Networks

    5G networks are supposed to offer a high flexibility in a several ways. In this regard, a twofold split of the processing in the radio access network is under discussion: A control plane / user plane split to support the software defined network-ing principle and a radio protocol stack layer based split to allow a flexible placement of processing functions between a central and one or more distributed units. In this work, the motivation and state of the art for both splits are described including a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages. It is followed by a description of a network architecture al-lowing a flexible implementation of these splits. This especially focuses on the required interfaces between control and user plane

    Facing the perpetrator's legacy: post-perpetrator generation documentary films

    [EN] The aim of this article is to address a transversal topic within perpetrator studies: how subsequent generations deal with the legacy of their perpetrator ancestors. To achieve it, we analyse six recent documentary films, all produced between 2015 and 2018 that cover four different contexts: Nazi Germany, the Spanish Civil War, and the Chilean and Argentine dictatorships. Through a comparative methodological approach, our focus is on finding similarities that define this global trend through the exploration of two closely related phenomena: (1) Personal responses and social responsibility and (2) Family dynamics. One important outcome of this new cinematic tendency, that we call the 'post-perpetrator generation documentary film', is that by accepting their relatives' involvement, the perpetrator's offspring are able to recover their personal identity, and also to reintegrate their personal experience into a broader historical context.     Disturbed Copper Bioavailability in Alzheimer's Disease

    Recent data from in vitro, animal, and human studies have shed new light on the positive roles of copper in many aspects of AD. Copper promotes the non-amyloidogenic processing of APP and thereby lowers the Aβ production in cell culture systems, and it increases lifetime and decreases soluble amyloid production in APP transgenic mice. In a clinical trial with Alzheimer patients, the decline of Aβ levels in CSF, which is a diagnostic marker, is diminished in the verum group (8 mg copper/day), indicating a beneficial effect of the copper treatment. These observations are in line with the benefit of treatment with compounds aimed at normalizing metal levels in the brain, such as PBT2. The data reviewed here demonstrate that there is an apparent disturbance in metal homeostasis in AD. More research is urgently needed to understand how this disturbance can be addressed therapeutically

    The marine natural product mimic MPM-1 is cytolytic and induces DAMP release from human cancer cell lines

    Bioprospecting contributes to the discovery of new molecules with anticancer properties. Compounds with cytolytic activity and the ability to induce immunogenic cell death can be administered as intratumoral injections with the aim to activate anti-tumor immune responses by causing the release of tumor antigens as well as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) from dying cancer cells. In the present study, we report the cytolytic and DAMP-releasing efects of a new natural product mimic termed MPM-1 that was inspired by the marine Eusynstyelamides. We found that MPM-1 rapidly killed cancer cells in vitro by inducing a necrosis-like death, which was accompanied by lysosomal swelling and perturbation of autophagy in HSC-3 (human oral squamous cell carcinoma) cells. MPM-1 also induced release of the DAMPs adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) from Ramos (B-cell lymphoma) and HSC-3 cells, as well as cell surface expression of calreticulin in HSC-3 cells. This indicates that MPM-1 has the ability to induce immunogenic cell death, further suggesting that it may have potential as a novel anticancer compound

    The Role of Additive Neurogenesis and Synaptic Plasticity in a Hippocampal Memory Model with Grid-Cell Like Input

    Recently, we presented a study of adult neurogenesis in a simplified hippocampal memory model. The network was required to encode and decode memory patterns despite changing input statistics. We showed that additive neurogenesis was a more effective adaptation strategy compared to neuronal turnover and conventional synaptic plasticity as it allowed the network to respond to changes in the input statistics while preserving representations of earlier environments. Here we extend our model to include realistic, spatially driven input firing patterns in the form of grid cells in the entorhinal cortex. We compare network performance across a sequence of spatial environments using three distinct adaptation strategies: conventional synaptic plasticity, where the network is of fixed size but the connectivity is plastic; neuronal turnover, where the network is of fixed size but units in the network may die and be replaced; and additive neurogenesis, where the network starts out with fewer initial units but grows over time. We confirm that additive neurogenesis is a superior adaptation strategy when using realistic, spatially structured input patterns. We then show that a more biologically plausible neurogenesis rule that incorporates cell death and enhanced plasticity of new granule cells has an overall performance significantly better than any one of the three individual strategies operating alone. This adaptation rule can be tailored to maximise performance of the network when operating as either a short- or long-term memory store. We also examine the time course of adult neurogenesis over the lifetime of an animal raised under different hypothetical rearing conditions. These growth profiles have several distinct features that form a theoretical prediction that could be tested experimentally. Finally, we show that place cells can emerge and refine in a realistic manner in our model as a direct result of the sparsification performed by the dentate gyrus layer

    This deliverable provides the consolidated preliminary view of the METIS-II partners on the 5 th generation (5G) radio access network (RAN) design at a mid-point of the project. The overall 5G RAN is envisaged to operate over a wide range of spectrum bands comprising of heterogeneous spectrum usage scenarios.
