Scaling in Plasticity-Induced Cell-Boundary Microstructure: Fragmentation and Rotational Diffusion
We develop a simple computational model for cell boundary evolution in
plastic deformation. We study the cell boundary size distribution and cell
boundary misorientation distribution that experimentally have been found to
have scaling forms that are largely material independent. The cell division
acts as a source term in the misorientation distribution which significantly
alters the scaling form, giving it a linear slope at small misorientation
angles as observed in the experiments. We compare the results of our simulation
to two closely related exactly solvable models which exhibit scaling behavior
at late times: (i) fragmentation theory and (ii) a random walk in rotation
space with a source term. We find that the scaling exponents in our simulation
agree with those of the theories, and that the scaling collapses obey the same
equations, but that the shape of the scaling functions depend upon the methods
used to measure sizes and to weight averages and histograms
Vaginal recurrence of endometrial cancer: MRI characteristics and correlation with patient outcome after salvage radiation therapy
Purpose To evaluate MRI characteristics in vaginal recurrence of endometrial cancer (EC) including tumor volume shrinkage during salvage radiotherapy, and to identify imaging features associated with survival. Methods Patients with vaginal recurrence of EC treated with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) followed by brachytherapy (BT), and with available pelvic MRI at two time points: baseline and/or before BT were retrospectively identified from 2004 to 2017. MRI features including recurrence location and tissue characteristics on T2- and T1-weighted images were evaluated at baseline only. Tumor volumes were measured both at baseline and pre-BT. Survival rates and associations were evaluated by Cox regression and Fisher's exact test, respectively. Results Sixty-two patients with 36 baseline and 50 pre-BT pelvic MRIs were included (24/62 with both MRIs). Vaginal recurrence of EC was most commonly located in the vaginal apex (27/36, 75%). Tumors with a post-contrast enhancing peripheral rim or low T2 signal rim at baseline showed longer recurrence-free survival (RFS) (HR 0.2, 95% CI 0.1-0.9, P < 0.05 adjusted for histology; HR 0.2, 95% CI 0.1-0.8, P < 0.05, respectively). The median tumor shrinkage at pre-BT was 69% (range 1-99%). Neither absolute tumor volumes nor volume regression at pre-BT were associated with RFS. Lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) at hysterectomy and adjuvant RT were associated with recurrence involving the distal vagina (both P < 0.05). Conclusion Vaginal recurrences with rim enhancement at baseline MRI predicted improved RFS, while tumor volume shrinkage at pre-BT did not. Distal vaginal recurrence was more common in patients with LVSI and adjuvant RT at EC diagnosis
New measurement of via neutron capture on hydrogen at Daya Bay
This article reports an improved independent measurement of neutrino mixing
angle at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Electron
antineutrinos were identified by inverse -decays with the emitted
neutron captured by hydrogen, yielding a data-set with principally distinct
uncertainties from that with neutrons captured by gadolinium. With the final
two of eight antineutrino detectors installed, this study used 621 days of data
including the previously reported 217-day data set with six detectors. The
dominant statistical uncertainty was reduced by 49%. Intensive studies of the
cosmogenic muon-induced Li and fast neutron backgrounds and the
neutron-capture energy selection efficiency, resulted in a reduction of the
systematic uncertainty by 26%. The deficit in the detected number of
antineutrinos at the far detectors relative to the expected number based on the
near detectors yielded in the
three-neutrino-oscillation framework. The combination of this result with the
gadolinium-capture result is also reported.Comment: 26 pages, 23 figure
Discussing atypical sexual harassment as a controversial issue in bystander programmes: One UK campus study
This research emanates from an anti-sexual violence bystander programme delivered at an English university. Fifteen students were identified through purposive and convenience sampling to take part in focus groups. Discussions emerged regarding atypical sexual harassment. There is a gap in the literature exploring sexual harassment outside of the male perpetrator and female victim narrative which this paper contributes to. This paper considers four conversational themes: âunwanted touching: women to menâ, âsexual banter: women to menâ, âsexual stereotypes: women and menâ, and âdeveloping stronger ethical subjectivityâ. This paper recognises most sexual harassment occurs from men to women, and acknowledges criticism of focussing otherwise when resources are limited, noting this risks obscuring the enduring power differentials between the sexes. It contends that exploring a controversial issue, such as male experience of sexual harassment, might help bystander programmes by developing ethical subjectivity in undergraduate students. Exploring sexual behaviour as a spectrum may lead to counter hegemonic discourses to emerge
Observation of the Decays B0->K+pi-pi0 and B0->rho-K+
We report the observation of B^0 decays to the K^+pi^-pi^0 final state using
a data sample of 78 fb^-1 collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^-
collider. With no assumptions about intermediate states in the decay, the
branching fraction is measured to be (36.6^{+4.2}_{-4.3}+- 3.0)*10^-6.We also
search for B decays to intermediate two-body states with the same K^+pi^-pi^0
final state. Significant B signals are observed in the rho(770)^- K^+ and
K^*(892)^+pi^- channels, with branching fractions of
(15.1^{+3.4+1.4+2.0}_{-3.3-1.5-2.1})* 10^-6 and
(14.8^{+4.6+1.5+2.4}_{-4.4-1.0-0.9})* 10^-6, respectively. The first error is
statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the largest
possible interference. Contributions from other possible two-body states will
be discussed. No CP asymmetry is found in the inclusive K^+pi^-pi^0 or rho^-K^+
modes, and we set 90% confidence level bounds on the asymmetry of
-0.12<A_{CP}<0.26 and -0.18<A_{CP}<0.64, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
