Don Quixote goes to Hollywood: la reescritura del mito por Charles Chaplin

The character of Charlot, created by Charles Chaplin, rewrites the myth of don Quixote in silent movies. While sharing the roots of the picaresque tradition, they represent a harsh criticism of modernity in all its stages. A distinction has to be made between the plain vaudevillesque humor of Charlot in the brief comic strips from 1914 and its tragi-comical shaping in some short films from 1915 up to Modern Times (1936). Beyond their mere physical aspects and their hilarious exploits, an underlying tragic heroism and idealism lead them to uphold all good causes and to support the wronged ones while they also struggle for survival. Charlot combines the comic with the sublime and, as well as the ingenious hidalgo, his soul becomes gradually fuller, deeper and more human. For all these reasons, this character could be regarded as a “quixote” of the big screen.El personaje de Charlot, creado por Charles Chaplin, traspone al cine mudo el mito de don Quijote. Unidos por el vínculo de la picaresca, ambos escenifican una dura crítica hacia la modernidad en sus diferentes estadios. Hay que distinguir el simple humorismo vodevilesco de Charlot en las breves tiras de 1914 de su configuración tragicómica desde algunos cortometrajes de 1915 hasta Modern Times (1936). Más allá de sus risibles apariencias físicas, y de sus disparatadas peripecias, subyacen en sus aventuras un heroísmo trágico y un idealismo que les llevan a defender las buenas causas y a apoyar a los desfavorecidos, a la vez que tienen que preocuparse por su propia supervivencia. Charlot une lo cómico con lo sublime y, al igual que el ingenioso hidalgo, su carácter muestra una gran hondura y una sincera humanidad. Todo esto le caracteriza como un Quijote de la gran pantalla

L’Histoire des imaginations extravagantes de Monsieur Oufle (1710), de Laurent Bordelon: el quijotismo y lo fantástico

Laurent Bordelon, a writer of the Enlightenment, published in 1710, in two parts, L’Histoire des imaginations extravagantes de Monsieur Oufle, a book that follows the adventures of a man driven mad by the readings of esoteric books who shapes his personality according to the characters and paradigms depicted in them. This new fantastic and supernatural quixote embarks on various extravagant and ludicrous adventures that show the immense distance between his bookish perception of the world and the anodyne reality that frustrates his aspirations. Not limiting himself to one model, Oufle aims to embody a whole set of esoteric and fantastic myths by becoming a man-wolf, invoking the devil, fearing the witches, thus demonstrating in all cases the power of the supernatural over human behaviour. From the standpoints of myth criticism and the theories of the fantastic I will analyse and evaluate this compendium of esoteric myths which give rise to a very unique and original kind of quixotism.Laurent Bordelon, escritor ilustrado, publicó en 1710, en dos partes, L’Histoire des imaginations extravagantes de Monsieur Oufle, un libro que relata las peripecias de un enloquecido por las lecturas de libros esotéricos que modulan su personalidad según los personajes y paradigmas que en ellos se presentan. Cervantes and his Don Quixote as an Exemplary Model in Early Modern French Narratives: Sorel, Scarron and Furetière

In this paper I shall explore Cervantes’ role as an “exemplary” model for the establishment of the aesthetics of Realism in France, which characterizes the modern novel in the 17th century. Through a comparative analysis, I shall highlight the influence of Don Quixote on the works of Charles Sorel and Paul Scarron (among others). By deploying strategies of parody and satire which are similar to Cervantes’, their novels implied a critical reaction against the heroic and sentimental works by Madeleine de Scudéry and Honoré d’Urfé. At the same time, the authors studied here should be regarded as forerunners to the renewal of the picaresque genre led by Lesage and the moral tales by Marivaux and Diderot

“Le Dur métier d’être belle femme”: sobre los arquetipos femeninos en Les Fleurs du Mal

Charles Baudelaire’s poetic production is studied as a canonical example of aesthetic modernity in literature. Feminine archetypes, inspired by the living experience of the poet, become the symbols of the enigmatic ambivalence of women. This figure makes part of the reality of correspondences and challenges the poet-prophet who has to decipher the mystery that underlies their different representations. In this article I aim to examine the feminine archetypes as a synthesis of Baudelaire’s aesthetic conception, his notion of modernity and his perception of Accursed Beauty and Love. Thus, I will demonstrate that the feminine archetypes constitute some key point elements in Baudelaire’s poetic alchemy.La obra poética de Charles Baudelaire se estudia como ejemplo canónico de la modernidad estética en la literatura. Los arquetipos femeninos, inspirados en las vivencias personales del poeta, se transfiguran en símbolos de la ambivalencia enigmática de la mujer. De este modo, dicha figura entra a formar parte de la realidad de las correspondencias y ofrece desafíos al poeta-profeta que tiene que descifrar el misterio que subyace bajo sus múltiples caras. En este artículo nos proponemos examinar los arquetipos femeninos como síntesis de la concepción estética de Baudelaire, su noción de la modernidad y su percepción de la Belleza y el amor malditos. This interview explores the imaginary worlds created by Mélanie de Coster, a Belgian writer of contemporary fantastic literature. Ever since she published her first book in 2003, De Coster has combined elements from the aesthetics of the fantastic with other genres, thus making this her personal trademark. The fantastic becomes then an approach which is not at the core of the story told, but it rather complements it by adding some features like surprise, anxie-ty or mystery. In her most recent novel, De l’autre côté des mondes, the main plot even includes some social worries. Eventually, the fantastic becomes the leading thread of such a heterogeneous production

Pia Petersen sous le signe de don Quichotte

This interview has been motivated by the Cervantean intertextuality of Pia Petersen’s (a French-speaking Danish author) last novel, Le Chien de don Quichotte (2012). Departing from the values that the writer attributes to Cervantes’ work, I try to establish a connection with a specific critical trend in order to test, later on, to which extent this approach is used by the author to create a series of characters placed under the sign of don Quixote. Finally, I evaluate her novel’s relation with contemporary reality
