Interacting water, nutrients, and shrub age control steppe grass-on-shrub competition: Implications for restoration

Understanding the factors that control grass–shrub interactions and coexistence is critical to the design of dryland management and restoration strategies. Using Stipa tenacissima tussocks as adult neighbor and Olea europaea var. sylvestris as target woody species, we performed a 5-year-long, large-scale manipulative experiment to investigate the independent and combined effects of water and nutrient availability, and the modulating effects of O. europaea ontogeny on the net outcome of grass–shrub interaction. At two contrasting dryland sites, we conducted experimental plantings of Olea seedlings on two microsites: contiguous to a Stipa tussock (Stipa microsite) and on the intertussock bare-soil areas (Open microsite), and manipulated resource availability by combining nutrient and water addition. The experiment followed a full factorial design, with all treatment combinations applied at each site. We monitored survival, height, and stem basal diameter of Olea individuals over a study period of 5 years. All across the wide range of conditions considered, negative effects of Stipa on Olea largely prevailed during the first 2 years after the plantation. We found that competition was stronger in the drier steppe, where extra inputs of water favored neutral interactions. Conversely, nutrient addition increased competition strength, particularly when combined with water inputs, pointing to the contrasting role of different resources and the importance of interactions between them in the control of plant–plant interaction outcome. The competition effects of Stipa faded with time and gradually shifted to neutral interaction as Olea individuals aged. Clumped or regular? the role of thinning pattern on pine growth and soil water content in dense Aleppo pine post-fire stands

The development of silvicultural practices that seek to promote structural heterogeneity is increasingly demanded. This work investigates the effect of thinning spatial pattern on the response to pre-commercial thinning of dense Aleppo pine post-fire stands. On three replicated experimental sites in SE Spain, we applied the following treatments: 600 trees/ha, regular thinning pattern (600R), with residual trees evenly spaced; 600 trees/ha, aggregated thinning pattern (600A), with residual pines arranged in clumps of ∽25 trees with a local within-clump density of 2500 trees/ha; and control treatment, with no thinning applied (> 20,000 trees/ha). We assessed treatment effects on pine growth, size-growth relationships, soil water content, and understory vegetation over the first three years after thinning application. Both regular and aggregated thinning pattern similarly increased pine radial growth. In general, dbh growth rates in response to thinning were faster for smaller trees than for larger trees. The growth rate of pine height was higher for 600R and control than for 600A, indicating a positive effect on height of both low and very high pine densities. We found a near-term positive effect of aggregated pattern on water availability at the stand level, mostly resulting from enhanced soil water content in the canopy gaps. For both thinning patterns, the recovery of understory vegetation was dominated by resprouter species. This study highlights the potential of aggregated thinning patterns to enhance the complexity and heterogeneity of the pine stands without compromising pine growth, which could be of great use to managing pine forests in Mediterranean areas.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. A User-Centred Methodology for the Development of Computer-Based Assistive Technologies for Individuals with Autism.

The design and development of computer assistive technologies must be tied to the needs and goals of end users and must take into account their capabilities and preferences. In this paper, we present MeDeC@, a Methodology for the Development of Computer Assistive Technologies for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), which relies heavily in our experience working with end users with ASD. The aim of this methodology is not to design for a broad group of users, but to design highly customizable tools so that they can be easily adapted to specific situations and small user groups. We also present two applications developed using MeDeC@ in order to test its suitability: EmoTraductor, a web application for emotion recognition for people with Asperger Syndrome, and ReadIt, a web browser plug-in to help people with ASD with written language understanding difficulties to navigate the Internet. The results of our evaluation with end users show that the use of MeDeC@ helps developers to successfully design computer assistive technologies taking into account the special requirements and scenarios that arise when developing this kind of assistive applications.pre-print703 K

La calidad total de servicios y la productividad empresarial del turismo receptivo en Miraflores, 2019

Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between service quality and business’ productivity of receptive tourism travel agencies in Miraflores (Lima, Peru), during the period of 2019. Method: The research was applied and empirical, has a non-experimental cross-sectional correlation, with a quantitative approach. The sample was made up of 50 tourist service providers from different travel agencies located in Miraflores district. Results: The results of the research show a strong and positive association of variables and dimensions. From a total of 50 tourist providers; 23 of the surveyed, which represents a 46%, stated the existence of a very good relationship between the variables of service quality and business’ productivity. Conclusion: The results indicate that the level of the travel agencies’ service quality has greatly decreased due to factors such as informality and the low percentage (9.7%) of travel agencies that have good practice application systems or quality management systems. Therefore, the study aims to improve the tourist agencies’ competitiveness and exceed the demands of the global market.Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre calidad total de servicios y la productividad empresarial de las agencias de viajes de turismo receptivo del distrito de Miraflores (Lima, Perú), durante el periodo 2019. Método: La investigación fue aplicada y empírica, no experimental correlacional de corte transversal, de enfoque cuantitativo. La muestra estuvo constituida por 50 prestadores de servicios de las diferentes agencias de viajes en el distrito de Miraflores. Resultados: La investigación muestra una asociación de variables y dimensiones fuertes y positivas. De un total de 50 prestadores de servicios turísticos, la media de los encuestados 23; es decir un 46%, manifestaron la existencia de muy buena relación entre las variables calidad total de servicios y la productividad empresarial. Conclusión: Las mediciones de la calidad total de servicios de las agencias de viajes del distrito de Miraflores disminuyen en gran manera por factores como la informalidad y el bajo índice (9,7%) de agencias de viajes que cuentan con sistemas de aplicación de buenas prácticas y/o sistemas de gestión de calidad, por lo que resulta de gran importancia la relación entre calidad total de servicio y la productividad empresarial. Por consiguiente, se busca mejorar la competitividad de las empresas de servicios turísticos y superar las exigencias de un mercado global

SIOS-m: desarrollo y simulación de un sistema Inteligente orientado a servicios móviles

El proyecto SIOS-m ha consistido principalmente en la creación de una plataforma de simulación orientada a servicios móviles. Para el desarrollo de la plataforma más idónea ha sido necesaria una investigación previa de las tecnologías propias de estos servicios. Y, partiendo de esta base, construir una aplicación inteligente que sea capaz de centralizar el proceso de comunicación entre el usuario final y los servicios ofrecidos por el proveedor, adaptándose en cada caso a las necesidades del usuario.
