    Factors influencing the life table statistics of the cassava mealybug Phenacoccus manihoti

    Detailed age-specific life table studies were carried out under controlled conditions to measure the effect of temperature, leaf quality ( = age), variety and plant drought stress on net production rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm) and generation time (G) of Phenacoccus manihoti Mat.-Ferr. in order to explain changes in population densities observed in the field. The developmental threshold calculated from our data and results published by various authors was 14.7°C. At 35°C all mealybugs died before reaching the adult stage. Mealybugs reared on leaves of different ages showed little differences in rm, and the higher occurrence of P. manihoti on plant tips and oldest leaves could not be explained with better nutritive value of these plant parts alone. Cassava varieties have a strong influence on the intrinsic rate of increase, which could explain differences in results published by other authors.     Implementation of a socio-ecological system navigation approach to human development in Sub-Saharan African communities

    This paper presents a framework for the development of socio-eco- logical systems towards enhanced sustainability. Emphasis is given to the dynamic properties of complex, adaptive social-ecological systems, their structure and to the fundamental role of agriculture. The tangible components that meet the needs of specific projects executed in Kenya and Ethiopia encompass project objectives, innovation, facilitation, continuous recording and analyses of monitoring data, that allow adaptive management and system navigation. Two case studies deal with system navigation through the mitigation of key constraints; they aim to improve human health thanks to anopheline malaria vectors control in Nyabondo (Kenya), and to improve cattle health through tsetse control and antitrypanosomal drug administration to cattle in Luke (Ethiopia). The second case deals with a socio-ecological navigation system to enhance sustainability, establishing a periurban diversified enterprise in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and developing a rural sustainable social-ecological system in Luke (Ethiopia). The project procedures are briefly described here and their outcomes are analysed in relation to the stated objectives. The methodology for human and cattle disease vector control were easier to implement than the navigation of social-ecological systems towards sustainability enhancement. The achievements considerably differed between key constraints removal and sustainability enhancement projects. Some recommendations are made to rationalise human and cattle health improvement efforts and to smoothen the road towards enhanced sustainability: i) technology system implementation should be carried out through an innovation system; ii) transparent monitoring information should be continuously acquired and evaluated for assessing the state of the system in relation to stated objectives for (a) improving the insight into the systems behaviour and (b) rationalizing decision support; iii) the different views of all stakeholders should be reconciled in a pragmatic approach to social-ecological system management

    Phase Transitions of Single Semi-stiff Polymer Chains

    We study numerically a lattice model of semiflexible homopolymers with nearest neighbor attraction and energetic preference for straight joints between bonded monomers. For this we use a new algorithm, the "Pruned-Enriched Rosenbluth Method" (PERM). It is very efficient both for relatively open configurations at high temperatures and for compact and frozen-in low-T states. This allows us to study in detail the phase diagram as a function of nn-attraction epsilon and stiffness x. It shows a theta-collapse line with a transition from open coils to molten compact globules (large epsilon) and a freezing transition toward a state with orientational global order (large stiffness x). Qualitatively this is similar to a recently studied mean field theory (Doniach et al. (1996), J. Chem. Phys. 105, 1601), but there are important differences. In contrast to the mean field theory, the theta-temperature increases with stiffness x. The freezing temperature increases even faster, and reaches the theta-line at a finite value of x. For even stiffer chains, the freezing transition takes place directly without the formation of an intermediate globule state. Although being in contrast with mean filed theory, the latter has been conjectured already by Doniach et al. on the basis of low statistics Monte Carlo simulations.     Structure Function of Polymer Nematic Liquid Crystals: A Monte Carlo Simulation

    We present a Monte Carlo simulation of a polymer nematic for varying volume fractions, concentrating on the structure function of the sample. We achieve nematic ordering with stiff polymers made of spherical monomers that would otherwise not form a nematic state.     Interacting Crumpled Manifolds: Exact Results to all Orders of Perturbation Theory

    In this letter, we report progress on the field theory of polymerized tethered membranes. For the toy-model of a manifold repelled by a single point, we are able to sum the perturbation expansion in the strength g of the interaction exactly in the limit of internal dimension D -> 2. This exact solution is the starting point for an expansion in 2-D, which aims at connecting to the well studied case of polymers (D=1). We here give results to order (2-D)^4, where again all orders in g are resummed. This is a first step towards a more complete solution of the self-avoiding manifold problem, which might also prove valuable for polymers.Comment: 8 page

    Impact assessment of the biological control of the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), by the introduced parasitoid Epidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae)

    The impact of Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero on growth and tuber yield of cassava, and the results of its biological control by the exotic parasitoid Epidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) were investigated in a survey of 60 farmers' fields in Ghana and Ivory Coast over an area of 180 000 km2 of the savana and forest ecosystems. Twenty-nine variables associated with plant growth, agronomic and environmental factors, and insect populations were recorded. Densities of P. manihoti were closely correlated with stunting of the cassava shoot tips and, less so, with the rate of stunting early in the growing season. With increasing mealybug infestations, average harvest indices declined and populations of E. lopezi and of indigenous coccinellids increased, but parasitoids were found at lower host levels than were predators. The length of time E. lopezi had been present in an area was the most important factor influencing mealybug densities. Thus, P. manihoti populations were significantly lower where E. lopezi had been present for more than half the planting season than in areas where E. lopezi was lacking or had been only recently introduced. A significant proportion of the farmers in the savanna zone, where P. manihoti populations were much higher than in the forest zone, had observed this decline due to E. lopezi. Tuber yield losses due to P. manihoti in the absence of E. lopezi were tentatively estimated at 463 g/plant in the savanna zone. No significant effect was found in the forest region. When E. lopezi was present, average P. manihoti damage scores were reduced significantly, both in the savanna and forest regions.
