The water factor in harvest-sprouting of hard red spring wheat
Sprouting in unthreshed, ripe, hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is induced by rain, but sprouting does not necessarily occur because the crop is wetted. The spike and grain water conditions conducive to sprouting were determined in a series of laboratory experiments. Sprouting did not occur in field growing wheat wetted to 110% water concentration until the spike water concentration was reduced to 12% and maintained at this concentration for 2 days before wetting. When cut at growth stage 11.3, Feekes scale, Saratovskaya 20 (USSR) sprouted after 4 days drying, Olaf and Alex between 7 and 15 days drying and Columbus, recognized for its resistance to harvest time sprouting, after more than 15 days drying. Sprouting potential was enhanced after 4 wetting drying cycles in which any wetted interval was too brief to permit sufficient water imbibition to initiate sprouting. At harvest ripeness, grain water concentration exceeded spike water concentration by 0.7 percentage units. Following 6 months storage, 20% of the kernels in 300 spike bundles (simulating windrows) sprouted within 28 hrs after initiation of wetting to saturation (150% water concentration). Ninety percent sprouting occurred within 8 days in bundles maintained at 75% water concentration and higher, but less sprouting occurred in bundles dried to 50% water concentration before resaturation
Rain-induced spring wheat harvest losses
When rain or a combination of rain and high humidity delay wheat harvest, losses can occur in grain yield and/or grain quality. Yield losses can result from shattering, from reduction in test weight, and in the case of windrowed grain, from rooting of sprouting grain at the soil: windrow contact. Losses in grain quality can result from reduction in test weight and from sprouting. Sprouting causes a degradation of grain proteins and starches, hence flour quality is reduced, and the grain price deteriorates to the value of feed grain. Although losses in grain yield and quality are rain-induced, these losses do not necessarily occur because a standing or windrowed crop is wetted by rain. Spike water concentration in hard red spring wheat must be increased to about 45-49% before sprouting is initiated in grain that has overcome dormancy. The time required to overcome this dormancy after the cultivar has dried to 12 to 14% water concentration differs with hard red spring cultivars. The effect of rain on threshing-ready standing and windrowed hard red spring wheat grain yeild and quality was evaluated. A goal was to develop the capability to forecast the extent of expected loss of grain yield and quality from specific climatic events that delay threshing
Magnetic phase diagram of MnSi inferred from magnetization and ac susceptibility
We report simultaneous measurements of the magnetization and the ac
susceptibility across the magnetic phase diagram of single-crystal MnSi. In our
study we explore the importance of the excitation frequency, excitation
amplitude, sample shape, and crystallographic orientation. The susceptibility,
dM/dH, calculated from the magnetization, is dominated by pronounced maxima at
the transition from the helical to the conical and the conical to the skyrmion
lattice phase. The maxima in dM/dH are not tracked by the ac susceptibility,
which in addition varies sensitively with the excitation amplitude and
frequency at the transition from the conical to the skyrmion lattice phase. The
same differences between dM/dH and the ac susceptibility exist for Mn1-xFexSi
(x=0.04) and Fe1-xCoxSi (x=0.20). Taken together our study establishes
consistently for all major crystallographic directions the existence of a
single pocket of the skyrmion lattice phase in MnSi, suggestive of a universal
characteristic of all B20 transition metal compounds with helimagnetic order.Comment: 19 pages, 20 figure
Microwave Scattering and Noise Emission from Afterglow Plasmas in a Magnetic Field
The microwave reflection and noise emission (extraordinary mode) from cylindrical rare‐gas (He, Ne, Ar) afterglow plasmas in an axial magnetic field is described. Reflection and noise emission are measured as a function of magnetic field near electron cyclotron resonance (ω ≈ ω_c) with electron density as a parameter (ω_p < ω). A broad peak, which shifts to lower values of ω_c/ω) as electron density increases, is observed for (ω_c/ω) ≤ 1. For all values of electron density a second sharp peak is found very close to cyclotron resonance in reflection measurements. This peak does not occur in the emission data. Calculations of reflection and emission using a theoretical model consisting of a one‐dimensional, cold plasma slab with nonuniform electron density yield results in qualitative agreement with the observations. Both the experimental and theoretical results suggest that the broad, density‐dependent peak involves resonance effects at the upper hybrid frequency ((ω_h)^2 = (ω_c)^2 + (ω_p)^2) of the plasma

Regularization independent of the noise level: an analysis of quasi-optimality
The quasi-optimality criterion chooses the regularization parameter in
inverse problems without taking into account the noise level. This rule works
remarkably well in practice, although Bakushinskii has shown that there are
always counterexamples with very poor performance. We propose an average case
analysis of quasi-optimality for spectral cut-off estimators and we prove that
the quasi-optimality criterion determines estimators which are rate-optimal
{\em on average}. Its practical performance is illustrated with a calibration
