Effects of selective dilution on the magnetic properties of La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Mn_{1-x}M'_xO_3 (M' = Al, Ti)
The magnetic lattice of mixed-valence Mn ions in
LaSrMnO is selectively diluted by partial substitution of
Al or Ti for Mn. The ferromagnetic transition temperature and
the saturation magnetization both decrease with substitution. By
presenting the data in terms of selective dilution, in the
low-doping region is found to follow the relation
, where refers to
the undiluted system and is the dilution concentration defined
as or for Al or Ti,
respectively. The scaling behavior of can be
analyzed in the framework of the molecular-field theory and still valid when Mn
is substituted by both Al and Ti. The results are discussed with respect to the
contributions from ferromagnetic double exchange and other possible
antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions coexisting in the material.Comment: Revtex4, 4 pages, 4 figures, 2006 Halong Conference Repor
Selective dilution and magnetic properties of La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Mn_{1-x}M'_xO_3 (M' = Al, Ti)
The magnetic lattice of mixed-valence Mn ions in LaSrMnO
is selectively diluted by partial substitution of Mn by Al or Ti. The
ferromagnetic transition temperature and the saturation moment decreases with
substitution in both series. The volume fraction of the non-ferromagnetic
phases evolves non-linearly with the substitution concentration and faster than
theoretically expected. By presenting the data in terms of selective dilutions,
the reduction of is found to be scaled by the relative ionic
concentrations and is consistent with a prediction derived from molecular-field
theory.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, REVTex4.0. Submitted to PR
Tenant Interest in Long-Term and Flexible Cash Leases
An objective rental arrangement has two important advantages. First, the tenant could farm as intensely as his costs and prices indicate that he should. If he does a better-than-average job he receives all of the benefits. Second, because the amount of rent to be paid cannot be affected by the tenant\u27s farming, the landlord is much less apt to seek a new tenant. Hence, the tenant\u27s security or tenure may increase. A disadvantage is that the tenant bears more price and weather risks. Also if the tenant makes an error in management he alone bears the loss. However, the tenant paying an objective rental should not have to pay as much rent since the landlord no longer bears these risks. In view of these advantages and disadvantages, how many and what kind of tenants would be willing to use objective rental methods such as the cash or flexible cash lease
Design and proof of concept for multi degree of freedom hydrostatically coupled dielectric elastomer actuators with roto-translational kinematics for object handling
In this article we present an upgraded design of the existing push-pull hydrostatically coupled dielectric elastomer actuator (HC-DEA) for use in the field of soft manipulators. The new design has segmented electrodes, which stand as four independent elements on the active membrane of the actuator. When properly operated, the actuator can generate both out of plane and in-plane motions resulting in a multi-degrees of freedom soft actuator able to exert both normal pushes (like a traditional HC-DEA) and tangential thrusts. This novel design makes the actuator suitable for delicate flat object transportation. In order to use the actuator in soft systems, we experimentally characterized its electromechanical transduction and modeled its contact mechanics. Finally, we show that the proposed actuator can be employed as a modular unit to develop active surfaces for flat object roto-translation. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd
The Large-Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE)
The LSPE is a balloon-borne mission aimed at measuring the polarization of
the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at large angular scales, and in
particular to constrain the curl component of CMB polarization (B-modes)
produced by tensor perturbations generated during cosmic inflation, in the very
early universe. Its primary target is to improve the limit on the ratio of
tensor to scalar perturbations amplitudes down to r = 0.03, at 99.7%
confidence. A second target is to produce wide maps of foreground polarization
generated in our Galaxy by synchrotron emission and interstellar dust emission.
These will be important to map Galactic magnetic fields and to study the
properties of ionized gas and of diffuse interstellar dust in our Galaxy. The
mission is optimized for large angular scales, with coarse angular resolution
(around 1.5 degrees FWHM), and wide sky coverage (25% of the sky). The payload
will fly in a circumpolar long duration balloon mission during the polar night.
Using the Earth as a giant solar shield, the instrument will spin in azimuth,
observing a large fraction of the northern sky. The payload will host two
instruments. An array of coherent polarimeters using cryogenic HEMT amplifiers
will survey the sky at 43 and 90 GHz. An array of bolometric polarimeters,
using large throughput multi-mode bolometers and rotating Half Wave Plates
(HWP), will survey the same sky region in three bands at 95, 145 and 245 GHz.
The wide frequency coverage will allow optimal control of the polarized
foregrounds, with comparable angular resolution at all frequencies.Comment: In press. Copyright 2012 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation

Foliations of Isonergy Surfaces and Singularities of Curves
It is well known that changes in the Liouville foliations of the isoenergy
surfaces of an integrable system imply that the bifurcation set has
singularities at the corresponding energy level. We formulate certain
genericity assumptions for two degrees of freedom integrable systems and we
prove the opposite statement: the essential critical points of the bifurcation
set appear only if the Liouville foliations of the isoenergy surfaces change at
the corresponding energy levels. Along the proof, we give full classification
of the structure of the isoenergy surfaces near the critical set under our
genericity assumptions and we give their complete list using Fomenko graphs.
This may be viewed as a step towards completing the Smale program for relating
the energy surfaces foliation structure to singularities of the momentum
mappings for non-degenerate integrable two degrees of freedom systems.Comment: 30 pages, 19 figure
Shape optimization for the generalized Graetz problem
We apply shape optimization tools to the generalized Graetz problem which is a convection-diffusion equation. The problem boils down to the optimization of generalized eigen values on a two phases domain. Shape sensitivity analysis is performed with respect to the evolution of the interface between the fluid and solid phase. In particular physical settings, counterexamples where there is no optimal domains are exhibited. Numerical examples of optimal domains with different physical parameters and constraints are presented. Two different numerical methods (level-set and mesh-morphing) are show-cased and compared
