Preliminary data for the 20 May 1974, simultaneous evaluation of remote sensors experiment
Several remote sensors were simultaneously used to collect data over the tidal James River from Hopewell to Norfolk, Virginia. Sensors evaluated included the Multichannel-Ocean Color Sensor, multispectral scanners, and multispectral photography. Ground truth measurements and remotely sensed data are given. Preliminary analysis indicates that suspended sediment and concentrated industrial effluent are observable from all sensors
Inherent Structures for Soft Long-Range Interactions in Two-Dimensional Many-Particle Systems
We generate inherent structures, local potential-energy minima, of the
"-space overlap potential" in two-dimensional many-particle systems using a
cooling and quenching simulation technique. The ground states associated with
the -space overlap potential are stealthy ({\it i.e.,} completely suppress
single scattering of radiation for a range of wavelengths) and hyperuniform
({\it i.e.,} infinite wavelength density fluctuations vanish). However, we show
via quantitative metrics that the inherent structures exhibit a range of
stealthiness and hyperuniformity depending on the fraction of degrees of
freedom that are constrained. Inherent structures in two dimensions typically
contain five-particle rings, wavy grain boundaries, and vacancy-interstitial
defects. The structural and thermodynamic properties of inherent structures are
relatively insensitive to the temperature from which they are sampled,
signifying that the energy landscape is relatively flat and devoid of deep
wells. Using the nudged-elastic-band algorithm, we construct paths from
ground-state configurations to inherent structures and identify the transition
points between them. In addition, we use point patterns generated from a random
sequential addition (RSA) of hard disks, which are nearly stealthy, and examine
the particle rearrangements necessary to make the configurations absolutely
stealthy. We introduce a configurational proximity metric to show that only
small local, but collective, particle rearrangements are needed to drive
initial RSA configurations to stealthy disordered ground states. These results
lead to a more complete understanding of the unusual behaviors exhibited by the
family of "collective-coordinate" potentials to which the -space overlap

Potentiation of melphalan activity against a murine tumour by nitroimidazole compounds.
The activity against murine anaplastic MT tumours of the chemotherapeutic agent melphalan, either alone or in combination with one of 6 nitroimidazole compounds, was assayed using an in vivo-in vitro tumour excision assay. The melphalan alone proved cytotoxic to the tumour, whereas relatively little cytotoxicity was produced by any of the nitroimidazoles alone. When the nitroimidazole were given in combination with melphalan, dose-modifying potentiation of its cytotoxicity was observed. Maximum potentiation occurred when the nitroimidazoles were given 0--30 min before the melphalan, although some potentiation was still evident when they were given up to 2 h before or after. There was no threshold in nitroimidazole dose required to produce this potentiation, the degree of potentiation increasing with dose, albeit at a diminishing rate, to give maximum dose-modification factors of about 3. The 6 nitroimidazole compounds in order of increasing effectiveness as potentiators of melphalan activity were: METRO, Ro 05-9963, MISO, RSU 1047, Ro 03-8800 and Ro 03-8799. This order corresponds to the increasing electron affinity of these compounds. The most effective compound here, Ro 03-8799, was about twice as effective as the most widely used nitroimidazole in such studies, MISO
SB9: The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits
The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits
(http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations of
spectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten and
collaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for 2,386
systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and its predecessors
are outlined and three straightforward applications are presented: (1)
Completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s and SB2s; (2) Shortest

A spectral study of a radio-frequency plasma-generated flux of atomic oxygen
The active environment of a radio-frequency (RF) plasma generator, with and without low-pressure oxygen, has been characterized through the identification of emission lines in the spectral region from 250 to 900 nm. The environment is shown to be dependent on the partial pressure of oxygen and the power applied to the RF generator. Atomic oxygen has been found in significant amounts as well as atomic hydrogen and the molecular oxygen species O2((sup 1)Sigma). The only charged species observed was the singly charged molecular ion O2(+). With a polymer specimen in the plasma chamber, carbon monoxide was also observed. The significance of these observations with respect to previous studies using this type of generator to stimulate material degradation in space is discussed. The possibility of using these generators as atomic oxygen sources in the development of oxygen atom fluorescence sensors is explored

An Optical Study of BG Geminorum: An Ellipsoidal Binary with an Unseen Primar Star
We describe optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the bright
variable BG Geminorum. Optical photometry shows a pronounced ellipsoidal
variation of the K0 I secondary, with amplitudes of ~0.5 mag at VRI and a
period of 91.645 days. A deep primary eclipse is visible for wavelengths <
4400A; a shallower secondary eclipse is present at longer wavelengths. Eclipse
timings and the radial velocity curve of the K0 secondary star indicate an
interacting binary where a lobe-filling secondary, M_2 ~ 0.5 Msun, transfers
material into a extended disk around a massive primary, M_1 ~ 4.5 Msun. The
primary star is either an early B-type star or a black hole. If it did contain
a black hole, BG Gem would be the longest period black hole binary known by a

Annual variability in the seasonal cycles of chlorophyll, nutrients and zooplankton on the North-West European continental shelf
Seasonal cycles of salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll and zooplankton at 8 locations on the West-European shelf were analysed with respect to their timing and magnitude in the period 1980-1984. A late spring bloom with low chlorophyll values (2-4 mg.m-³) is observed in the Irish Sea, off the Scottish east coast and the Channel entrance. An early spring bloom and relatively high chlorophyll values (7-12 mg.m-³) are found in the southern Bight and the Skagerrak, whereas a late spring bloom with high chlorophyll concentrations (24 mg.m-³) is found along the Dutch and Belgian coast. In contrast to the other regions, the peak of the phytoplankton cycle in the German Bight (Helgoland) occurs in the summer period instead of the spring period. The peak in the yearly abundance of copepods shifts from May-June in the south to July-August in the north of the shelf. In the Irish Sea and the Channel entrance two seasonal copepods peaks are observed. The January nitrate values in Irish Sea, the southern Bight and the Skagerrak are about 20 % higher than those in the Atlantic input signal in the Channel entrance and east off Scotland. The January DIP values in these regions are comparable to those of the input signal, but the Irish Sea forms an exception here the level is increased by 10-20%. If compared with the Atlantic input signal the January values for nitrate and DIP at the Dutch and Belgium coast are about 10 and 4, and in the German Bight (Helgoland) 4 and 3 times higher, respectively. At most sites changes in the seasonal cycles of chorophyll coincide with changes in nutrient concentrations, wheras the maximum level of the seasonal signal is related to the nutrient levels

Search for Pairs of Isolated Radio Pulsars - Components in Disrupted Binary Systems
We have developed a method for analyzing the kinematic association of
isolated relativistic objects - possible remnants of disrupted close binary
systems. We investigate pairs of fairly young radio pulsars with known proper
motions and estimated distances (dispersion measures) that are spaced no more
than 2-3 kpc apart. Using a specified radial velocity distribution for these
objects, we have constructed 100-300 thousand trajectories of their possible
motion in the Galactic gravitational field on a time scale of several million
years. The probabilities of their close encounters at epochs consistent with
the age of the younger pulsar in the pair are analyzed. When these
probabilities exceed considerably their reference values obtained by assuming a
purely random encounter between the pulsars under consideration, we conclude
that the objects may have been gravitationally bound in the past. As a result,
we have detected six pulsar pairs (J0543+2329/J0528+2200,
J1453-6413/J1430-6623, J2354+6155/J2321+6024, J1915+1009/J1909+1102,
J1832-0827/J1836-1008, and J1917+1353/J1926+1648) that are companions in
disrupted binary systems with a high probability. Estimates of their kinematic
