    A shared database of underground utility lines for 3D mapping and GIS applications

    For the purpose of facility management it is very important to have detailed and up-to-date databases of underground utility lines, but such data are not always available with adequate accuracy. Hence, the need of collecting and organizing suitable information on underground services is a fundamental issue when dealing with urban data. Besides, by analyzing the process of designing and laying new underground infrastructures it is possible to implement an efficient and cost-effective approach to integrate and update existing maps by exploiting the surveying required for the installation of new facilities. It is also important to underline that collecting all the data in a unique integrated database (and GIS) gives the possibility to share (at least at a local level) the cartographic and thematic information for an optimal management of underground networks. In this paper, a database (DB) model for archiving the underground lines data is presented. The structure of the DB has been designed by following the standard methodology for the modelling of a relational DB, going through successive phases and originating the external, conceptual and logical model. Finally, preliminary tests have been carried on for parts of the DB to verify quality parameters

    Impact of the inversion time on regional brain perfusion estimation with clinical arterial spin labeling protocols

    Objective: Evaluating the impact of the Inversion Time (TI) on regional perfusion estimation in a pediatric cohort using Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL). Materials and methods: Pulsed ASL (PASL) was acquired at 3 T both at TI 1500 ms and 2020 ms from twelve MRI-negative patients (age range 9–17 years). A volume of interest (VOIs) and a voxel-wise approach were employed to evaluate subject-specific TI-dependent Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) differences, and grey matter CBF Z-score differences. A visual evaluation was also performed. Results: CBF was higher for TI 1500 ms in the proximal territories of the arteries (PTAs) (e.g. insular cortex and basal ganglia — P < 0.01 and P < 0.05 from the VOI analysis, respectively), and for TI 2020 ms in the distal territories of the arteries (DTAs), including the watershed areas (e.g. posterior parietal and occipital cortex — P < 0.001 and P < 0.01 from the VOI analysis, respectively). Similar differences were also evident when analyzing patient-specific CBF Z-scores and at a visual inspection. Conclusions: TI influences ASL perfusion estimates with a region-dependent effect. The presence of intraluminal arterial signal in PTAs and the longer arterial transit time in the DTAs (including watershed areas) may account for the TI-dependent differences. Watershed areas exhibiting a lower perfusion signal at short TIs (~ 1500 ms) should not be misinterpreted as focal hypoperfused areas

    Study on the differences of BMI between olms found in cave and the ones sampled in spring

    The olm (Proteus anguinus) is a blind amphibian, depigmented and with an extremely reduced metabolism. These are adaptations to cave life that allow the animals to exploit this hostile (from a human perspective) habitat. Adaptations to cave life, should prevent successful exploitation of the external environment. However, although the Proteus is a cave animal, it has been reported by some authors in the spring environment, Our previous results showed that this presence, would seem not to be random, in but linked to very specific factors such as hydroperiod the absence of potential predators. In the light of these results, we have conducted a study with the aim of verifying whether the Proteus benefits from exploiting the trophic resources occurring in springs. Since June 2020 we have sampled 64 springs and 12 caves in the Monfalcone province, each olm found during the sampling was photographed, measured and weighed. A total of 73 different olms were analyzed and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated for each individual. Olms found in springs had a significantly higher BMI than those found in caves. The BMI of springs’ olms was significantly related to amount of the trophic available, evidencing that they took advantages from exploiting the external environment. These results contribute to support the hypothesis of the non-random presence of the Proteus in the spring environment, the olm, in fact, seem to benefit from this type of habitat taking advantage of the greater number of resources present in it

    Activity of the olm (Proteus anguinus) in surface habitats: ecological and evolutionary insights

    The olm is considered as a classic example of troglobiont organism. However, in the past different observations of individuals of the typical troglomorphic populations have been reported for springs of Venetia Giulia. The aim of this work is to point out the non-random active use of surface habitats by the olm, providing a comparison with the occurrence observed in caves and performing an assessment of factors favouring ecotone habitats exploitation. Since 2020 we started multiple day and night surveys of olms in both springs and caves. Each spring and cave habitat monitored has been characterised by respect to abiotic and biotic features, including planktonic and benthic prey availability. We detected the olm at least once in 10 springs, with a maximum of 9 individuals occurring together. Detection probability in springs and caves was similar. Spring habitats provided higher density of potential prey available. Olms seems to prefer springs without predator fish and temporary hydroperiod. We recorded in one spring a larva of 3.5 cm which could be the smallest ever recorded in the field. We suggest that epigean habitats and borders with surface may have an underestimated importance for animals adapted to subterranean environments, including the olm. Our results stimulate for testing if exploitation of ecotones between surface and groundwater can lead to differentiation in populations/subpopulations of stygobiont animals

    Ge and Si Microcrystal Photodetectors with Enhanced Infrared Responsivity

    Ge and Si micro-crystals, grown on Si patterned substrates, can be used as absorbing elements for photodetection in the near-infrared. In such microstructures, light confinement effects due to crystal facet, enhance light absorption in the near-infrared as compared to conventional epitaxial layers. Devices based on single micro-crystals and on micro-crystals arrays have been fabricated and characterized. The photocurrent of Si photodetectors based on single micro-crystals have been measured in linear and avalanche regime, demonstrating a state-of-the-gain of ≈10 4. Ge-on-Si photodetectors based on micro-crystal arrays, fabricated using graphene as top contact, have also been fabricated, showing a responsivity in the 1500-1800 nm exceeding that of conventional planar devices

    Urogenital Abnormalities in Adenosine Deaminase Deficiency

    BACKGROUND: Improved survival in ADA-SCID patients is revealing new aspects of the systemic disorder. Although increasing numbers of reports describe the systemic manifestations of adenosine deaminase deficiency, currently there are no studies in the literature evaluating genital development and pubertal progress in these patients. METHODS: We collected retrospective data on urogenital system and pubertal development of 86 ADA-SCID patients followed in the period 2000-2017 at the Great Ormond Street Hospital (UK) and 5 centers in Italy. In particular, we recorded clinical history and visits, and routine blood tests and ultrasound scans were performed as part of patients' follow-up. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: We found a higher frequency of congenital and acquired undescended testes compared with healthy children (congenital, 22% in our sample, 0.5-4% described in healthy children; acquired, 16% in our sample, 1-3% in healthy children), mostly requiring orchidopexy. No urogenital abnormalities were noted in females. Spontaneous pubertal development occurred in the majority of female and male patients with a few cases of precocious or delayed puberty; no patient presented high FSH values. Neither ADA-SCID nor treatment performed (PEG-ADA, BMT, or GT) affected pubertal development or gonadic function. CONCLUSION: In summary, this report describes a high prevalence of cryptorchidism in a cohort of male ADA-SCID patients which could represent an additional systemic manifestation of ADA-SCID. Considering the impact urogenital and pubertal abnormalities can have on patients' quality of life, we feel it is essential to include urogenital evaluation in ADA-SCID patients to detect any abnormalities, initiate early treatment, and prevent long-term complications

    Data Descriptor: Field-recorded data on the diet of six species of European Hydromantes cave salamanders

    The availability of data on the feeding habits of species of conservation value may be of great importance to develop analyses for both scientific and management purposes. Stomach flushing is a harmless technique that allowed us to collect extensive data on the feeding habits of six Hydromantes species. Here, we present two datasets originating from a three-year study performed in multiple seasons (spring and autumn) on 19 different populations of cave salamanders. The first dataset contains data of the stomach content of 1,250 salamanders, where 6,010 items were recognized; the second one reports the size of the intact prey items found in the stomachs. These datasets integrate considerably data already available on the diet of the European plethodontid salamanders, being also of potential use for large scale meta-analyses on amphibian diet

    Precision measurement of the neutrino velocity with the ICARUS detector in the CNGS beam

    During May 2012, the CERN-CNGS neutrino beam has been operated for two weeks for a total of 1.8 10^17 pot in bunched mode, with a 3 ns narrow width proton beam bunches, separated by 100 ns. This tightly bunched beam structure allows a very accurate time of flight measurement of neutrinos from CERN to LNGS on an event-by-event basis. Both the ICARUS-T600 PMT-DAQ and the CERN-LNGS timing synchronization have been substantially improved for this campaign, taking ad-vantage of additional independent GPS receivers, both at CERN and LNGS as well as of the deployment of the "White Rabbit" protocol both at CERN and LNGS. The ICARUS-T600 detector has collected 25 beam-associated events; the corresponding time of flight has been accurately evaluated, using all different time synchronization paths. The measured neutrino time of flight is compatible with the arrival of all events with speed equivalent to the one of light: the difference between the expected value based on the speed of light and the measured value is tof_c - tof_nu = (0.10 \pm 0.67stat. \pm 2.39syst.) ns. This result is in agreement with the value previously reported by the ICARUS collaboration, tof_c - tof_nu = (0.3 \pm 4.9stat. \pm 9.0syst.) ns, but with improved statistical and systematic errors.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 1 tabl

    Consensus on COVID‐19 Vaccination in Pediatric Oncohematological Patients, on Behalf of Infectious Working Group of Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology

    Vaccines represent the best tool to prevent the severity course and fatal consequences of the pandemic by the new Coronavirus 2019 infection (SARS‐CoV‐2). Considering the limited data on vaccination of pediatric oncohematological patients, we developed a Consensus document to support the Italian pediatric hematological oncological (AIEOP) centers in a scientifically correct communication with families and patients and to promote vaccination. The topics of the Consensus were: SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and disease (COVID‐19) in the pediatric subjects; COVID‐19 vaccines (type, schedule); who and when to vaccinate; contraindications and risk of serious adverse events; rare adverse events; third dose and vaccination after COVID‐19; and other general prevention measures. Using the Delphi methodology for Consensus, 21 statements and their corresponding rationale were elaborated and discussed with the representatives of 31 centers, followed by voting. A high grade of Consensus was obtained on topics such as the potential risk of severe COVID‐19 outcome in pediatric oncohematological patients, the need for vaccination as a preventative measure, the type, schedule and booster dose of vaccine, the eligibility of the patients for vaccination, and the timing, definition, and management of contraindications and serious adverse events, and other general prevention measures. All 21 of the statements were approved. This consensus document highlights that children and adolescents affected by hematological and oncological diseases are a fragile category. Vaccination plays an important role to prevent COVID‐ 19, to permit the regular administration of chemotherapy or other treatments, to perform control visits and hospital admissions, and to prevent treatment delays
