    Residual Strength of Liquefied Sand: Laboratory vs. Field Measurements

    Determining the residual strength of liquefied sand is essential for estimating post-earthquake stability of vulnerable earth structures, or calculating runout of liquefaction flow slides. Current practice is to select values from a database of back-calculated residual strengths from failure case histories, which have been related to representative penetration test resistance numbers in the failed materials. Given the uncertainties involved, it is desirable to compare the field data with laboratory tests under controlled conditions. This paper describes residual strength measurements for a uniform fine sand using two recently-developed tests designed to impose large strains and strain rates: a modified triaxial test in which a metal coupon is dragged through the liquefied sample by an external dead weight, and a ring shear device which can impose constant rates of strain on the liquefied sand. In all cases, a stress-thinning behavior is observed; however, coupon movement through the liquefied sand is basically laminar, representing conditions in the interior of a flowing mass, while the rotating ring creates a well-defined contact shear band and higher resistance, which might be considered more representative of flow at the base of a sliding mass. Comparison with back-calculated field values shows that coupon residual strengths plot at the lower bound, and ring shear results at the upper bound, of backcalculated field values

    One full-scale vehicle crash test was conducted on the Nebraska Turned-Down Approach Terminal Section. Test NETD-1 was conducted with a 1984 Dodge Colt weighing 1,887-lbs (test inertial). Impact conditions were 59.0 mph and 0 degrees with a 1.25-ft offset toward the roadway. The test was conducted and reported in accordance with the requirements specified in the Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Appurtenances, National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report No. 230. The safety performance of the Nebraska Turned-Down Approach Terminal Section was determined to be unacceptable according to the NCHRP 230 criteria

    Railing Systems for Use on Timber Deck Bridges

    Bridge railing systems in the United States have historically been designed based on static load criteria given in the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. In the past decade, full-scale vehicle crash testing has been recognized as a more appropriate and reliable method of evaluating bridge railing acceptability. In 1989, AASHTO published the Guide Specifications for Bridge Railings, which gave the recommendations and procedures to evaluate bridge rails by full-scale vehicle crash testing. In 1993, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) published Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features, which provided criteria for evaluating longitudinal barriers. Based on these specifications, a cooperative research program was initiated between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Forest Products Laboratory, and later the FHWA, to develop and crash test 11 bridge rails for wood deck bridges. The research that resulted in successful development and testing of 11 bridge railing systems for longitudinally and transversely laminated wood bridge decks in accordance with AASHTO Performance Level 1 and 2 (PL-1 and PL-2) requirements and Test Levels 1, 2, and 4 (TL-1, TL-2, and TL-4) requirements of NCHRP Report 350 are described here

    Arc-textured metal surfaces for high thermal emittance space radiators

    Carbon arc electrical discharges struck across the surfaces of metals such as Nb-1 percent Zr, alter the morphology to produce a high thermal emittance surface. Metal from the surface and carbon from the arc electrode vaporize during arcing, and then condense on the metal surface to produce a microscopically rough surface having a high thermal emittance. Quantitative spectral reflectance measurements from 0.33 to 15 microns were made on metal surfaces which were carbon arc treated in an inert gas environment. The resulting spectral reflectance data were then used to calculate thermal emittance as a function of temperature for various methods of arc treatment. The results of arc treatment on various metals are presented for both ac and dc arcs. Surface characterization data, including thermal emittance as a function of temperature, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic oxygen durability, are also presented. The ac arc texturing was found to increase the thermal emittance at 800 K from 0.05 to 0.70

    Variation in Seagrass-Associated Macroinvertebrate Communities Along the Gulf Coast of Peninsular Florida: An Exploration of Patterns and Ecological Consequences

    Seagrasses form vast meadows of structurally complex habitat that support faunal communities with greater numbers of species and individuals than nearby unstructured habitats. The Gulf coast of peninsular Florida represents a natural laboratory ideally suited to the study of processes that shape seagrass-associated invertebrate and fish communities within meadows of a single species of seagrass, Thalassia testudinum. This suitability arises from a pronounced structural and chemical gradient that exists over ecologically relevant spatial and temporal scales, as revealed by extensive monitoring of water quality and seagrass. We hypothesized that seagrass-associated invertebrate communities would vary across five estuarine systems spread along a spatial gradient in phosphorus concentration, an important driver of seagrass and phytoplankton growth in this region. The quantitative results based on data acquired at 25 stations (75 samples, 52,086 specimens, and 161 taxa) indicated that each of the five estuarine systems were distinct with regard to species composition and differences among systems were driven by abundant or relatively common species. In addition, we found evidence to indicate food webs in seagrass meadows along this gradient may differ, especially in the relative dominance of algal grazers and predatory invertebrates. These changes in species composition and trophic roles could be driven by phosphorus directly, through increases in rates of primary production with higher concentrations of phosphorus, or indirectly, through nutrient-mediated changes in the physical structure of the seagrass canopy. Our results suggest that differences in the habitat created by T. testudinum under differing phosphorus supplies lead to ecologically significant shifts in macroinvertebrate communities
