Improvements to context based self-supervised learning
We develop a set of methods to improve on the results of self-supervised
learning using context. We start with a baseline of patch based arrangement
context learning and go from there. Our methods address some overt problems
such as chromatic aberration as well as other potential problems such as
spatial skew and mid-level feature neglect. We prevent problems with testing
generalization on common self-supervised benchmark tests by using different
datasets during our development. The results of our methods combined yield top
scores on all standard self-supervised benchmarks, including classification and
detection on PASCAL VOC 2007, segmentation on PASCAL VOC 2012, and "linear
tests" on the ImageNet and CSAIL Places datasets. We obtain an improvement over
our baseline method of between 4.0 to 7.1 percentage points on transfer
learning classification tests. We also show results on different standard
network architectures to demonstrate generalization as well as portability. All

A photospheric metal line profile analysis of hot DA white dwarfs with circumstellar material
Some hot DA white dwarfs have circumstellar high ion absorption features in
their spectra, in addition to those originating in the photosphere. In many
cases, the line profiles of these absorbing components are unresolved. Given
the importance of the atmospheric composition of white dwarfs to studies of
stellar evolution, extra-solar planetary systems and the interstellar medium,
we examine the effect of including circumstellar line profiles in the abundance
estimates of photospheric metals in six DA stars. The photospheric C and Si
abundances are reduced in five cases where the circumstellar contamination is
strong, though the relative weakness of the circumstellar Si IV absorption
introduces minimal contamination, resulting in a small change in abundance. The
inability of previous, approximate models to reproduce the photospheric line
profiles here demonstrates the need for a technique that accounts for the
physical line profiles of both the circumstellar and photospheric lines when

New 3-D gas density maps of NaI and CaII interstellar absorption within 300pc
We present new high resolution (R>50,000) absorption measurements of the NaI
doublet (5889 - 5895A) along 482 nearby sight-lines, in addition to 807 new
measurements of the CaII K (3933A) absorption line. We have combined these new
data with previously reported measurements to produce a catalog of absorptions
towards a total of 1857 early-type stars located within 800pc of the Sun. Using
these data we have determined the approximate 3-dimensional spatial
distribution of neutral and partly ionized interstellar gasdensity within a
distance-cube of 300pc from the Sun. All newly recorded spectra were analyzed
by means of a multi-component line profile-fitting program, in most cases using
simultaneous fits to the line doublets. Normalized absorption profiles were
fitted by varying the velocity, doppler width and column density for all
intervening interstellar clouds. The resulting total column densities were then
used in conjunction with the Hipparcos distances of the target stars to
construct inversion maps of the 3-D spatial density distribution of the NaI and
CaII bearing gas. A plot of the equivalent width of NaI versus distance reveals
a wall of neutral gas at ~80pc that can be associated with the boundary wall to
the central rarefied Local Cavity region. In contrast, a similar plot for the
equivalent width of CaII shows no sharply increasing absorption at 80pc, but
instead we observe a slowly increasing value of CaII equivalent width with
increasing sight-line distance sampled.Comment: A&A accepte

The purpose of this paper is to conduct a strategic analysis of the broadcast radio industry with a focus on Cumulus Media, Inc. This analysis will outline a brief history of Cumulus and a timeline of major events in its history, along with an explanation of the companyâs purpose. Then, the external environment will be analyzed and the potential effects on Cumulus. Using Dr. Michael Porterâs Five Forces Analysis, an assessment will be made of the threat of entrants, the factors affecting the power of buyers and sellers, the threat of substitutes of broadcast radio, and trends in the industry. The paper will then look at competitiveness within the industry including anticipation of what Cumulsâ competitors might do from a strategic perspective, a brief summary of industry competition and a look at industry key success factors. Once the external analysis is complete, the paper will look inward and take a close look at of Cumulus Mediasâ resources, objectives and financial performance. The strategies employed by a company are vital to their future and must be flexible enough to change thus the paper will analyze the companyâs strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Cumulus operates in an industry that continues to move rapidly towards consolidation and the results of the research will show what constitutes a good strategic fit as well as a list of alternatives for positioning Cumulus for the future and a list of recommendations
Biopreservation of hepatocytes: current concepts on hypothermic preservation, cryopreservation, and vitrification
Isolated liver cells (primarily isolated hepatocytes) have found important applications in science and medicine over the past 40 years in a wide range of areas, including physiological studies, investigations on liver metabolism, organ preservation and drug de-toxification, experimental and clinical transplantation. An integral component of many of these works is the need to store the isolated cells, either for short or long-term periods. This review covers the biopreservation of liver cells, with a focus on the history of liver cell biopreservation, the application of hypothermia for short-term storage, standard cryopreservation methods for isolated hepatocytes, the biopreservation of other types of liver cells, and recent developments such as vitrification of hepatocytes. By understanding the basis for the different approaches, it will be possible to select the best options for liver cell biopreservation in different applications, and identify ways to improve preservation protocols for the future.Fil: Fuller, Barry J.. Volatile-Rich Circumstellar Gas in the Unusual 49 Ceti Debris Disk
We present Hubble Space Telescope STIS far-UV spectra of the edge-on disk
around 49 Ceti, one of the very few debris disks showing sub-mm CO emission.
Many atomic absorption lines are present in the spectra, most of which arise
from circumstellar gas lying along the line-of-sight to the central star. We
determined the line-of-sight CI column density, estimated the total carbon
column density, and set limits on the OI column density. Surprisingly, no
line-of-sight CO absorption was seen. We discuss possible explanations for this
non-detection, and present preliminary estimates of the carbon abundances in
the line-of-sight gas. The C/Fe ratio is much greater than the solar value,
suggesting that 49 Cet harbors a volatile-rich gas disk similar to that of Beta

Stringent Nucleotide Recognition by the Ribosome at the Middle Codon Position.
Accurate translation of the genetic code depends on mRNA:tRNA codon:anticodon base pairing. Here we exploit an emissive, isosteric adenosine surrogate that allows direct measurement of the kinetics of codon:anticodon University of California base formation during protein synthesis. Our results suggest that codon:anticodon base pairing is subject to tighter constraints at the middle position than at the 5'- and 3'-positions, and further suggest a sequential mechanism of formation of the three base pairs in the codon:anticodon helix
Heterogeneity of monosomy 3 in fine needle aspiration biopsy of choroidal melanoma.
PurposeTo report on the heterogeneity of monosomy 3 in a fine needle aspiration biopsy obtained transsclerally from choroidal melanoma for prognosis.MethodsAll clinical records for patients who had been diagnosed with choroidal melanoma and underwent iodine-125 plaque brachytherapy with intraoperative transscleral fine needle aspiration biopsy from January 2005 to August 20, 2011, and who had a positive result for monosomy 3 according to fluorescence in situ hybridization as reported by clinical cytogenetics testing were collected. Patient age and sex, total number of cells evaluated and number of cells positive for monosomy 3, tumor size, and metastatic outcome were recorded for each patient.ResultsA positive result for monosomy 3 was reported in 93 patients who underwent transscleral fine needle aspiration biopsy. Two patients were lost to follow-up immediately post-operatively, and the remaining 91 patients were included in this study. The mean number of cells evaluated in the biopsy was 273 (range 28 to 520). The mean percentage of cells positive for monosomy 3 was 62.9% (range 4.7%-100%). The mean tumor height was 5.91 mm (range 1.99 to 10.85 mm). Larger tumors were associated with a higher percentage of cells positive for monosomy 3. During the average follow-up interval of 28.9 months (range 3-76 months), choroidal melanoma metastasis developed in 18 (20%) patients. Patients whose tumors had 1%-33% of cells positive for monosomy 3 had a significantly lower risk of metastasis-related death compared to patients whose tumors harbored a higher percentage of monosomy 3 (p = 0.04).ConclusionsCytogenetic heterogeneity of fluorescent in situ hybridization for monosomy 3 exists in a biopsy sample. Larger tumors were more likely to have a higher percentage of monosomy 3 positive cells in the sample. Furthermore, patients whose tumors had more than 33% of cells positive for monosomy 3 had a poorer prognosis than patients whose tumors had lower percentages of monosomy 3
High visibility two photon interference of frequency time entangled photons generated in a quasi phase matched AlGaAs waveguide
We demonstrate experimentally the frequency time entanglement of photon pairs
produced in a CW pumped quasi phased matched AlGaAs superlattice waveguide. A
visibility of 96.0+-0.7% without background subtraction has been achieved,
which corresponds the violation of Bell inequality by 52 standard deviations
