BEING ONE WITH NATURE: THE NATURAL NON-DUAL EXPERIENCE IN THOREAU
A statistical model for epigenetic control of miRNAs
microRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs involved in post-transcriptional gene regulation. Since the dysregulation of only a few miRNAs can affect many biological pathways, miRNAs are thought to play a key role in cancer development and can be used as biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. In order to understand how miRNA dysregulation leads to a cancer phenotype it is important to determine the basic regulatory mechanisms that drive miRNA expression. Although much is known about miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation, little is known about the epigenetic control of miRNAs. Here, we performed cell-line specific miRNA promoter predictions and built a classification model for expressed and non-expressed miRNAs based on several epigenetic features, e.g. histone marks and DNA methylation at both, miRNA promoters and around miRNA hairpins. We were able to classify intragenic and intergenic miRNAs with an accuracy of 79% and 85%, respectively, and identified the most important features for classification via feature selection. Surprisingly, we found that DNA methylation seems to have a dual role in regulating miRNA expression at transcriptional level: at promoters, high levels of DNA methylation correlate with transcriptional repression, while around miRNA hairpins high levels of DNA methylation have a positive impact on the expression level of the mature miRNA
Old dilemmas in health care delivery: a comparison of the Canadian, English and American cases]
This paper systematizes some aspects related to the consequences of the institutional health system in the financing and delivery of health care services. The analysis is based on empirical evidences from United States, Canada and United Kingdom. The focus of this work is on the analysis of the impacts of the incentives that result from the contracts established between health care market agents in the management efficiency of the health care services.health care system; moral hazard
User-centered design : creating didactic resources for seniors
_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis article aims to present an experience report on the creation of basic
computer teaching resources for seniors. In this research, we used user-centered design
seeking to make them more accessible, accurate, concise and intelligible to those users.
This study involved 116 seniors, mostly women, with a mean age of 65 years, with
heterogeneous education and social classes, all graduates of the extension project
"Computer Workshops for Seniors", between 2008-2010, of the Federal University of
Santa Catarina. We developed two educational resources: a printed teaching material
and two video classes. These educational resources were evaluated by the target
audience through questionnaires and based on a series of experiments built with those
users
This work was focused on drug user's recovery arising from its inserts in self-help groups of Narcotics Anonymous. Described the method of construction and analysis of a social network formed by members of an association based on therapeutic principles of the 12 steps. Proximity dimensions were evaluated, clearance, godfather and trust in the network. One of analysis lists the actors as the prestige and the rejection, and other on controlling the flow of information between them. The topology is a scale free network. The results showed that the use of the network theory allows us to understand the role of each member of the group. The effect of group dynamics identifies leaders influencing people network. Sharing values in re-education has allowed abstinence to be a crucial value in the recovery of drug us
