    Rethinking engineering education

The Professional of today needs to acquire a dynamic ability to absorb information, adjust to organizational goals, and navigate in a complex work environment. For this reason, a classic approach seems to be more useful for the demands of today's job market. It is at least interesting to notice, that the classic approach is being neglected, at a time when its product might be more interesting than ever. The Engineering Education Team of COPEC – Science and Education Research Council has designed a program that is knowledge centered and specially challenging, which integrates classical engineering approaches and real experience in order to achieve a high level of engineers ready to perform as professionals or researchers. It aims to form the Engineer – a professional that is capable to learn for life and be creative in many ways. This work is financed by FEDER funds through the Competitivity Factors Operational Programme – COMPETE: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007043 and by national funds through FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology within the scope of the project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007136 and project UID/CEC/00319/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

International experiences and the implications for the success of engineering programs

The working midst has become challenging due to the multicultural environment and the need of skills such as cultural understanding, are very important in the formation of an engineer. It has been like this for many years however, now more than ever. So, for engineering schools, internationalization has become, on top of others, another demand for the accomplishment of a good program. It became necessary to provide international academic experience for the students. For this reason, internationalization is now a strategy to raise the quality of courses and as another result of these efforts, to raise the engineering students’ retention rate along the program. The goal of this paper is to present and discuss the internationalization process of a University’s engineering school, with the objective of making the program more attractive and promoting the double diploma in order to higher the quality of the programs.(undefined)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Although aerobic training has been shown to affect the lactate transport of skeletal muscle, there is no information concerning the effect of continuous aerobic training on spontaneous physical activity (SPA). Because every movement in daily life (i.e., SPA) is generated by skeletal muscle, we think that it is possible that an improvement of SPA could affect the physiological properties of muscle with regard to lactate transport. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 12 weeks of continuous aerobic training in individualized intensity on SPA of rats and their gene expressions of monocarboxylate transporters (MCT) 1 and 4 in soleus (oxidative) and white gastrocnemius (glycolytic) muscles. We also analyzed the effect of continuous aerobic training on aerobic and anaerobic parameters using the lactate minimum test (LMT). Sixty-day-old rats were randomly divided into three groups: a Baseline group in which rats were evaluated prior to initiation of the study; a control group (Co) in which rats were kept without any treatment during 12 weeks; and a chronic exercise group (Tr) in which rats swam for 40 min/day, 5 days/week at 80% of anaerobic threshold during 12 weeks. After the experimental period, SPA of rats was measured using a gravimetric method. Rats had their expression of MCTs determined by RT-PCR analysis. In essence, aerobic training is effective in maintaining SPA, but did not prevent the decline of aerobic capacity and anaerobic performance, leading us to propose that the decline of SPA is not fully attributed to a deterioration of physical properties. Changes in SPA were concomitant with changes in MCT1 expression in the soleus muscle of trained rats, suggestive of an additional adaptive response toward increased lactate clearance. This result is in line with our observation showing a better equilibrium on lactate production remotion during the continuous exercise (LMT). We propose an approach to combat the decline of SPA of rats in their home cages. This new finding is worth for scientists who work with animal models to study the protective effects of exercise.7Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo - FAPESP [2011/16222-7, 2012/20501-1, 2014/10336-9]Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior - CNPq [305650/2009-2]Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

Reasoning About a Service-oriented Programming Paradigm

This paper is about a new way for programming distributed applications: the service-oriented one. It is a concept paper based upon our experience in developing a theory and a language for programming services. Both the theoretical formalization and the language interpreter showed us the evidence that a new programming paradigm exists. In this paper we illustrate the basic features it is characterized by

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF THE MOORING PROCEDURES OF THE BGL-1 PIPELINE LAUNCHING BARGE

ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to present the application of a computational tool intended to help the crew of the BGL-1 pipeline launching barge to develop safe mooring procedures. This tool is able to calculate the deformed catenary configuration of all mooring lines, regarding the subsea layout and the local environmental conditions, and taking into account one or more buoys attached to the mooring lines in order to avoid interference and accidents with subsea obstacles. One of the main characteristics of this computational tool is the fact that it is able to incorporate the correct definition of the seabed from bathymetric curves, and to automatically consider the position of the subsea obstacles, and possible interferences between the mooring lines and the obstacles. This is performed through a specialized interface with the SGO (Obstacles Management System) database system. This system, developed by Petrobras, contains frequently updated information about the bathymetry and position of subsea obstacles, gathered by a special vessel equipped with a ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle). Case studies will be presented, in order to illustrate the application of the system to the design of actual mooring procedures

Preservation methods of spermatozoa using refrigeration have been developed for canine sperm; however, the rate of fertilization is still low, possibly due to cell damage for unknown reasons. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of refrigeration upon motility, mitochondrial activity, acrosomal membrane integrity, and acrosomal reaction in dog sperm incubated in three culture media (Ferp Talp, CCMm, Sp Talp) using new methodologies (Mito Tracker, Lyso Tracker, SBTI). The results indicated that exist a significant decrease (p<0.05) in motility, mitochondrial activity, and acrosomal membrane integrity in refrigerated sperm in comparison with fresh sperm. Also, the dynamic of acrosomal reaction was different in refrigerated sperm in comparison with fresh sperm. The Sp Talp and CCMm media showed the best results in holding the mitochondrial activity and acrosomal membrane integrity
