The Darboux transformation and the complex Toda lattice

    Get PDF
It is well known that each solution of the Toda lattice can be represented by a tridiagonal matrix J(t). Under certain restrictions, it is possible to obtain some new solution by using the Darboux transformation of J(t) ¡ CI. Our goal is the extension of this fact, which is known for the real lattice, to high order complex Toda lattices as well as to the bi-infinite Toda lattice. In this latter case, we use the factorization LU for block-tridiagonal matrices

Non-Hermitian robust edge states in one-dimension: Anomalous localization and eigenspace condensation at exceptional points

Capital to topological insulators, the bulk-boundary correspondence ties a topological invariant computed from the bulk (extended) states with those at the boundary, which are hence robust to disorder. Here we put forward an ordering unique to non-Hermitian lattices, whereby a pristine system becomes devoid of extended states, a property which turns out to be robust to disorder. This is enabled by a peculiar type of non-Hermitian degeneracy where a macroscopic fraction of the states coalesce at a single point with geometrical multiplicity of 11, that we call a phenomenal point.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Governing Affect

Roberto E. Barrios presents an ethnographic study of the aftermaths of four natural disasters: southern Honduras after Hurricane Mitch; New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina; Chiapas, Mexico, after the Grijalva River landslide; and southern Illinois following the Mississippi River flood. Focusing on the role of affect, Barrios examines the ways in which people who live through disasters use emotions as a means of assessing the relevance of governmentally sanctioned recovery plans, judging the effectiveness of such programs, and reflecting on the risk of living in areas that have been deemed prone to disaster. Emotions such as terror, disgust, or sentimental attachment to place all shape the meanings we assign to disasters as well as our political responses to them. The ethnographic cases in Governing Affect highlight how reconstruction programs, government agencies, and recovery experts often view postdisaster contexts as opportune moments to transform disaster-affected communities through principles and practices of modernist and neoliberal development. Governing Affect brings policy and politics into dialogue with human emotion to provide researchers and practitioners with an analytical toolkit for apprehending and addressing issues of difference, voice, and inequity in the aftermath of catastrophes

Investigating Associations Between Early Life Stress, Neural Response to Reward, and Depression

The link between exposure to early life stress (ELS), such as child maltreatment, and the development of depression has been well-replicated. However, the mechanisms that underlie this connection remain poorly understood. One potential mechanism may be neural alterations in reward-related brain regions, such as the ventral striatum and sub-regions of the prefrontal cortex. Recent research indicates that exposure to child maltreatment is associated with aberrant reward-related brain activity. A separate body of work implicates similar reward-related neural alterations in the etiology and maintenance of depression. The current study investigated whether altered neural response to reward plays a mechanistic role in explaining the association between ELS and depression. Here, we examined associations between history of child maltreatment, depressive symptoms, and neural response to reward during a reward processing fMRI task in a sample of adult men (N = 165; 30.5% White, 60.6% Black) who were a part of the Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS), a longitudinal study examining the development of negative mental health outcomes. History of child maltreatment was assessed via referrals prior to age 18 from the Allegheny County’s Office of Children, Youth, and Families. Neuroimaging data and self-reported depressive symptoms were collected in adulthood (M age = 32.64, SD age = 3.62). Child maltreatment significantly predicted greater depressive symptoms. Child maltreatment and depressive symptoms were, however, not significantly associated with altered neural response to reward. Findings from the current study suggest directions for future work probing characteristics of adversity (e.g., chronicity, timing), as well as specific factors likely to moderate neural responses to reward (e.g., reward phase, magnitude of gains)
