    kHz Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 0614+09

    We report on a comprehensive analysis of the kilohertz (above 300 Hz) quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) detected from the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U0614+09 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). With a much larger data set than previously analyzed (all archival data from February 1996 up to October 2007), we first investigate the reality of the 1330 Hz QPO reported by van Straaten et al. (2000). This QPO would be of particular interest since it has the highest frequency reported for any source. A thorough analysis of the same observation fails to confirm the detection. On the other hand, over our extended data set, the highest QPO frequency we measure for the upper kHz QPO is at about 1224 Hz; a value which is fully consistent with the maximum values observed in similar systems. Second, we demonstrate that the frequency dependence of the quality factor and amplitude of the lower and upper kHz QPOs follow the systematic trends seen in similar systems (Barret et al., 2006). In particular, 4U0614+09 shows a drop of the quality factor of the lower kHz QPO above 700 Hz. If this is due to an approach to the innermost stable circular orbit, it implies a neutron star mass of about 1.9 solar masses. Finally, when analyzing the data over fixed durations, we have found a gap in the frequency distribution of the upper QPO, associated with a local minimum of its amplitude. A similar gap is not present in the distribution of the lower QPO frequencies, suggesting some cautions when interpreting frequency ratio distributions, based on the occurrence of the lower QPO only.Comment: 10 pages, 6 color figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Balmer-Like Series for Baryon Resonances

    The pole positions of various baryon resonances have been found to reveal a well pronounced clustering, the so-called H"ohler cluster. In a previous work, the H"ohler clusters have been shown to be identical to Lorentz multiplets of the type (1/2+l', 1/2+l')*[(1/2,0)+(0,1/2)] with l' integer. Here we show that the cluster positions are well described by means of a Balmer-series like recursive mass formula.Comment: 5 pages LaTex, World Scientific style, two tables.     Possible 38 day X-ray period of KS1731-260

    We report the detection of a 38 day period in the X-ray flux of the transient burster KS1731-260. The narrow peak of periodicity was detected during ~TJD 10150--11050 when the source had a high and relatively stable X-ray flux. After \~TJD 11100 the source became strongly variable on a time scale of months that contaminates the search for the 38 day periodicity. The detected period can not be a binary period. The binary with Roche lobe overflow has in this case large radii of the secondary and of the accretion disk. Disk and secondary star illumination by X-ray flux from luminous neutron star would lead to high infrared brightness of the binary. That clearly contradicts the infrared data even for the brightest infrared sources within CHANDRA error box of KS1731-260. Remaining possibility is that observed periodicity is connected with the accretion disk precession, similar to that was observed for SS 433, Her X-1, Cyg X-1 etc.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     Constraining the equation of state of supra-nuclear dense matter from XMM-Newton observations of neutron stars in globular clusters

    We report on the detailed modelling of the X-ray spectra of three likely neutron stars. The neutron stars, observed with XMM-Newton are found in three quiescent X-ray binaries in the globular clusters: omega Cen, M 13 and NGC 2808. Whether they are accreting at very low rates or radiating energy from an accretion heated core, their X-ray spectra are expected to be those of a hydrogen atmosphere. We use and compare publicly available hydrogen atmosphere models, with constant and varying surface gravities to constrain the masses and radii of the neutron stars. Thanks to the high XMM-Newton throughput, and the accurate distances available for these clusters, using the latest science analysis software release and calibration of the XMM-Newton EPIC cameras, we derive the most stringent constraints on the masses and radii of the neutron stars obtained to date from these systems. A comparison of the models indicate that previously used hydrogen atmosphere models (assuming constant surface gravity) tend to underestimate the mass and overestimate the radius of neutron stars. Our data constrain the allowed equations of state to those which concern normal nucleonic matter and one possible strange quark matter model, thus constraining radii to be from 8 km and masses up to 2.4 M_\odot.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to be published in The Astrophysical Journa

    Vibration characteristics of 1/8-scale dynamic models of the space-shuttle solid-rocket boosters

    Vibration tests and analyses of six 1/8 scale models of the space shuttle solid rocket boosters are reported. Natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes were obtained for these aluminum shell models having internal solid fuel configurations corresponding to launch, midburn (maximum dynamic pressure), and near endburn (burnout) flight conditions. Test results for longitudinal, torsional, bending, and shell vibration frequencies are compared with analytical predictions derived from thin shell theory and from finite element plate and beam theory. The lowest analytical longitudinal, torsional, bending, and shell vibration frequencies were within + or - 10 percent of experimental values. The effects of damping and asymmetric end skirts on natural vibration frequency were also considered. The analytical frequencies of an idealized full scale space shuttle solid rocket boosted structure are computed with and without internal pressure and are compared with the 1/8 scale model results

    ASCA Observations of GX 354-0 and KS 1731-260

    We report on ASCA observations of the low mass X-ray binaries GX 354-0 and KS 1731-260. The spectrum of GX 354-0 is best described as a power-law or a Comptonized spectrum with tau ~ 5 and kT ~ 8 keV and a residual at ~6.5 keV. The residual may be a disk reflection or a Compton broadened Gaussian line from the hot inner ADAF-like coronal region. The absorption column density to the source is 2.9e22 cm^-2. No soft thermal component was detected. The spectrum from KS 1731-260 is softer and it is best fit with a two component model with a column density of 1.1e22 cm^-2. The likely interpretation is emission from a Comptonizing cloud with an optical depth tau>12 and either a neutron star or a disk blackbody emission. We discuss the likely location of the Comptonizing cloud for both sources within the context of several proposed emission models.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Update on the ICUD-SIU consultation on multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging in localised prostate cancer

    Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) imaging is a rapidly evolving field. Dramatic improvements in prostate MRI during the last decade will probably change the accuracy of diagnosis. This chapter reviews recent current evidence about MRI diagnostic performance and impact on PCa management. Materials and methods: The International Consultation on Urological Diseases nominated a committee to review the literature on prostate MRI. A search of the PubMed database was conducted to identify articles focussed on MP-MRI detection and staging protocols, reporting and scoring systems, the role of MP-MRI in diagnosing PCa prior to biopsy, in active surveillance, in focal therapy and in detecting local recurrence after treatment. Results: Differences in opinion were reported in the use of the strength of magnets [1.5 Tesla (T) vs. 3T] and coils. More agreement was found regarding the choice of pulse sequences; diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI), dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE MRI), and/or MR spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) are recommended in addition to conventional T2-weighted anatomical sequences. In 2015, the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS version 2) was described to standardize image acquisition and interpretation. MP-MRI improves detection of clinically significant PCa (csPCa) in the repeat biopsy setting or before the confirmatory biopsy in patients considering active surveillance. It is useful to guide focal treatment and to detect local recurrences after treatment. Its role in biopsy-naive patients or during the course of active surveillance remains debated. Conclusion: MP-MRI is increasingly used to improve detection of csPCa and for the selection of a suitable therapeutic approach
