Current-induced cleaning of graphene
A simple yet highly reproducible method to suppress contamination of graphene
at low temperature inside the cryostat is presented. The method consists of
applying a current of several mA through the graphene device, which is here
typically a few m wide. This ultra-high current density is shown to remove
contamination adsorbed on the surface. This method is well suited for quantum
electron transport studies of undoped graphene devices, and its utility is
demonstrated here by measuring the anomalous quantum Hall effect.Comment: Accepted for publication in Applied Physics Letter
Lattice Expansion in Seamless Bi layer Graphene Constrictions at High Bias
Our understanding of sp2 carbon nanostructures is still emerging and is
important for the development of high performance all carbon devices. For
example, in terms of the structural behavior of graphene or bi-layer graphene
at high bias, little to nothing is known. To this end we investigated bi-layer
graphene constrictions with closed edges (seamless) at high bias using in situ
atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy. We directly observe a
highly localized anomalously large lattice expansion inside the constriction.
Both the current density and lattice expansion increase as the bi-layer
graphene constriction narrows. As the constriction width decreases below 10 nm,
shortly before failure, the current density rises to 4 \cdot 109 A cm-2 and the
constriction exhibits a lattice expansion with a uniaxial component showing an
expansion approaching 5 % and an isotropic component showing an expansion
exceeding 1 %. The origin of the lattice expansion is hard to fully ascribe to
thermal expansion. Impact ionization is a process in which charge carriers
transfer from bonding states to antibonding states thus weakening bonds. The
altered character of C-C bonds by impact ionization could explain the
anomalously large lattice expansion we observe in seamless bi-layer graphene
constrictions. Moreover, impact ionization might also contribute to the
observed anisotropy in the lattice expansion, although strain is probably the
predominant factor.Comment: to appear in NanoLetter
Transport properties of graphene in the high-current limit
We present a detailed study of the high-current transport properties of
graphene devices patterned in a four-point configuration. The current tends to
saturate as the voltage across graphene is increased but never reaches the
complete saturation as in metallic nanotubes. Measurements are compared to a
model based on the Boltzmann equation, which includes electron scattering
processes due to charged and neutral impurities, and graphene optical-phonons.
The saturation is incomplete because of the competition between disorder and
optical-phonon scattering
The environment of graphene probed by electrostatic force microscopy
We employ electrostatic force microscopy to study the electrostatic
environment of graphene sheets prepared with the micro-mechanical exfoliation
technique. We detect the electric dipole of residues left from the adhesive
tape during graphene preparation, as well as the dipole of water molecules
adsorbed on top of graphene. Water molecules form a dipole layer that can
generate an electric field as large as 10^9 V/m. We expect that water molecules
can significantly modify the electrical properties of graphene devices.Comment: to be published in Applied Physics Letter
ABSTRACT: The application of morphometric methods became one of the most frequently used approaches in the field of Biological Anthropology throughout the 20th century. Concurrently with this development, the use of databases generated by different researchers became widespread in comparative studies. Therefore, it has become necessary to develop methodological strategies that allow an evaluation of the observations made by one or more observers and increase their accuracy. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the intra- and interobserver error in the scoring of craniofacial metric variables and its influence on the analysis of biological relationships between populations. For this purpose, an experimental design of random complete blocks with repetitions was applied. A sample of 20 skulls from Rio Negro Valley - 10 with pseudo-circular deformation and 10 with plane-lambdic deformation- was analyzed. Four observers recorded a set of eight craniofacial metric variables. The observations were statistically compared by means of intra class correlation tests and repeated measures ANOVA. Multivariate analyses were also performed to assess the relationships among the samples of deformed skulls measured by different observers. Our results indicate an increase in the consistency of the observations made by each observer, higher inter-observer error values among non-trained observers, and the influence of the inconsistencies among observations on the results of the multivariate analyses designed for the assessment of inter-sample relationships.
Since the early 1960s, there was an increasing interest in the application of non-metric cranial traits to the analysis of relationships between populations. One of the assumptions for the use of these traits is based upon the simplicity to standardize the recordings. However, several papers suggest that the interobserver error on such recordings is high. Therefore, the goals of this paper are to evaluate the intra and interobserver error on the scoring of non-metric cranial traits, as well as to analyze the effect of the interobserver error in the biological distances estimated with them. An archeological sample (n=20) from the lower stretch Valley of Río Negro Valley (Río Negro Province, Argentina) was analyzed. Eight discrete variables from the skull were recorded independently by four observers. The observation error was evaluated by means of a randomized complete blocks design, with three repetitions, and employing the Kappa index and the McNemar test. The biological distance between the two samples was estimated through the Mean Measure of Divergence and a multidimensional scaling test. Our results indicate that 1) the intraobserver error diminishes with the application of observational designs; 2) the interobserver error increases in successive series and; 3) the differences among observers modify the results of calculated biodistance between samples.

The Collective for Intervention Against Violence (CIAV) is an interdisciplinary feminist group that emerged in 2012 as a response to two issues with significant research deficits: lethal violence and disappearances of individuals. These new forms of violence have diverse facets that can be analyzed, for instance, from the perspective of gender, migratory processes, and territorial networks. Moreover, these issues are intertwined with multiple factors and contexts that call for new modes of work and research. Therefore, in this paper, we will present our theoretical and practical journey, with a particular emphasis on the methodology and strategies developed to address the different cases to which we are called. We will also discuss how, from our experience, we seek to challenge traditional models of forensic anthropology research by proposing new ways to approach judicial cases. Finally, we outline some specific cases in which we have intervened, providing detailed information about the diverse strategies used. Additionally, we present new lines of research and future projects.Fil: Sandoval Ramos, Belén Pastora. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
