High precision measurement of the hyperfine fields of substitutional and defect associated Cd in single crystalline hcp cobalt
The hyperfine fields of Cd in single crystalline hcp Co were measured after simultaneous implantation of 111mCd and 111In. High statistics measurements could be done separately for each parent isotope combining the e--g and g-g PAC techniques. The hyperfine coupling constants wL(CdCo)=422.8(1) Mrad/s and w0(CdCo)=6.14(11) Mrad/s are determined for Cd probes in undisturbed substitutional sites. Several defect associated sites in the hcp Co lattice are clearly seen in the data. Most of the radiation damage created by the ion implantation anneals out at temperatures below 503 K, with only one dominating component surviving at this temperature. This defect is assigned as a probe atom in an interstitial site, surrounded by a vacancy tetrahedron. The corresponding magnetic field and electric field gradient are collinear with the c-axis of the Co lattice, and the respective coupling constants are wL(defect)= 216.7(2) Mrad/s and w0(defect)= 45.3(6) Mrad/s
Atomic environment and interfacial structural order of TiAlN/Mo multilayers
Multilayered TiAlN/Mo coatings were deposited by dc reactive magnetron sputtering in a custom-made chamber. In order to assess the composition of these coatings, a combined study of Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) experiments were performed. Through the simulation of the EXAFS spectra, giving the local environment of the titanium atoms inside the nitride (TiAlN), a cubic phase has been evidenced with aluminium atoms occupying titanium sites. For modulation
periods in the range of 3.6–11.8 nm, RBS simulations on these multilayers also enabled the determination of the level of intermixing that occurs at the interfaces as a function of the negative bias voltage and number of layers. It was observed that the intermixing width could be as high as 2.1 nm for the roughest samples (larger periods) or as low as 0.4 nm for those with the sharpest interfaces (smaller periods).Comunidade Europeia (CE). Analytical simulation of RBS spectra of nanowire samples
Almost all, if not all, general purpose codes for analysis of Ion Beam Analysis data have been originally developed to handle laterally homogeneous samples only. This is the case of RUMP, NDF, SIMNRA, and even of the Monte Carlo code Corteo. General-purpose codes usually include only limited support for lateral inhomogeneity. In this work, we show analytical simulations of samples that consist of a layer of parallel oriented nanowires on a substrate, using a model implemented in NDF. We apply the code to real samples, made of vertical ZnO nanowires on a sapphire substrate. Two configurations of the nanowires were studied: 40 nm diameter, 4.1 μm height, 3.5% surface coverage; and 55 nm diameter, 1.1 μm height, 42% surface coverage. Structural evolution of Ti-Al-Si-N nanocomposite coating
Ti–Si–Al–N films were prepared by rf reactive magnetron sputtering, in static and rotation modes, using
a wide range of different deposition conditions, which created conditions to obtain Ti–Al–Si–N coatings
with different structural arrangements.
Films prepared below a critical nitrogen flow, under conditions out of thermodynamic equilibrium,
revealed a preferential growth of an fcc (Ti,Al,Si)Nx compound with a small N deficiency. With nitrogen
flow above that critical value, the reduction of the lattice parameter was no longer detected. However,
a thermal annealing showed that a complete thermodynamically driven segregation of the TiN and Si3N4
phases was not yet obtained. The segregation upon annealing induced a self-hardening and showed
a multiphase system, where the crystalline TiN, (Ti,Al)N and (Ti,Al,Si)Nx phases were identified by X-ray
diffraction. This behavior is due to the de-mixing of the solid solution associated to a small N deficiency
On the growth kinetics of Ni(Pt) silicide thin films
We report on the effect of Pt on the growth kinetics of δ-Ni2Si and Ni 1−xPtxSi thin films formed by solid phase reaction of a Ni(Pt) alloyed thin film on Si(100). The study was performed by real-time Rutherford backscattering spectrometry examining the silicide growth rates for initial Pt concentrations of 0, 1, 3, 7, and 10 at. % relative to the Ni content. Pt was found to exert a drastic effect on the growth kinetics of both phases. δ-Ni2Si growth is slowed down tremendously, which results in the simultaneous growth of this phase with Ni 1−xPtxSi. Activation energies extracted for the Ni 1−xPtxSi growth process exhibit an increase from Ea = 1.35 ± 0.06 eV for binary NiSi to Ea = 2.7 ± 0.2 eV for Ni 1−xPtxSi with an initial Pt concentration of 3 at. %. Further increasing the Pt content to 10 at. % merely increases the activation energy for Ni 1−xPtxSi growth to Ea = 3.1 ± 0.5 eV
Pathogenic Rickettsia in ticks of spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo Graeca) sold in a Qatar live animal market
The dissemination of vector arthropods harbouring zoonotic pathogens through the uncontrolled transboundary trade of exotic and pet animals poses an important threat to Public Health. In the present report, we describe the introduction of pathogenic Rickettsia africae and R. aeschlimanni in ticks removed from imported tortoises in Qatar. A total of 21 ticks were collected from pet spur‐thighed tortoises (Testudo graeca) from Doha, May 2018, and studied for species identification and characterization of Rickettsia spp. Morphological and molecular analysis of ticks allowed their identification as Hyalomma aegyptium. Molecular analysis of partial ompA and gltA genes showed that Rickettsia sequences found on these ticks clustered with sequences classified as R. aeschilimanii and R. africae. Since pre‐adult stages of H. aegyptium also feed on humans, this tick species may play a role in the transmission of R. aeschilimanii and R. africae. We alert for the introduction of non‐native pets as vehicles for tick importation, known vectors for animal and human pathogenic agents. Importation of exotic species into non‐autochthonous countries deserves strict control to enforce robust surveillance and mitigate potential exotic diseases epidemics.P. Functional behaviour of TiO2films doped with noble metals
To evaluate the effects of different concentrations of noble metal in a TiO2 matrix, different films
of both Ag:TiO2 and Au:TiO2 systems were prepared. Mechanical and tribological
characterization was carried out to evaluate the coatings response as a function of the noble metals
composition and (micro)structure of the films. The overall set of results indicates that the
amorphous films reveal better results than the crystalline ones. For the amorphous samples, the reduced Young’s modulus and the adhesion critical loads followed similar tendencies in both sets
of films. Wear rates were similar for all samples except for the one with the highest silver content.
To improve brittleness of TiO2 films, the results seem to indicate that a slight metal doping is
preferred, and Au showed to be a better choice than Ag. In fact, the sample with the lowest Au
content revealed a better mechanical behaviour than the pure TiO2 film.This research was sponsored by FEDER funds through the COMPETE program (Programa

Serological Evidence of Rickettsia Exposure among Patients with Unknown Fever Origin in Angola, 2016-2017
Spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) is one among the aetiologies that cause fever of unknown origin in Angola. Despite their occurrence, there is little information about its magnitude in this country either because it is misdiagnosed or due to the lack of diagnostic resources. For this purpose, eighty-seven selected malaria- and yellow fever-negative serum specimens collected between February 2016 and March 2017 as part of the National Laboratory of Febrile Syndromes, from patients with fever (≥37.5°C) for at least 4 days and of unknown origin, were screened for Rickettsia antibodies through an immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Serological results were interpreted according to the 2017 guidelines for the detection of Rickettsia spp. Three seroreactive patients had detectable IgM antibodies to Rickettsia with an endpoint titre of 32 and IgG antibodies with endpoint titres of 128 and 256. These findings supported a diagnosis of Rickettsia exposure amongst these patients and highlight that rickettsioses may be among the cause of unknown febrile syndromes in Angola. Therefore, physicians must be aware of this reality and must include this vector-borne disease as part of aetiologies that should be considered and systematically tested in order to delineate appropriate strategies of diagnostic and control of Rickettsia in Angola.P. Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratios as Prognostic Inflammatory Biomarkers in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), and HIV/HCV Coinfection.
Background:Inflammation in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients is associated with poorer health outcomes. Whether inflammation as measured by the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) adds information to existing prognostic indices is not known. Methods:We analyzed data from 2000 to 2012 in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS), overall and stratified by HIV/hepatitis C virus status (n = 89 786). We randomly selected a visit date at which all laboratory values of interest were available within 180 days; participants with HIV received at least 1 year of antiretroviral therapy. We followed patients for (1) mortality and (2) hepatic decompensation (HD) and analyzed associations using Cox regression, adjusted for a validated mortality risk index (VACS Index 2.0). In VACS Biomarker Cohort, we considered correlation with biomarkers of inflammation: interleukin-6, D-dimer, and soluble CD-14. Results:Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and PLR demonstrated strong unadjusted associations with mortality (P < .0001) and HD (P < .0001) and were weakly correlated with other inflammatory biomarkers. Although NLR remained statistically independent for mortality, as did PLR for HD, the addition of NLR and PLR to the VACS Index 2.0 did not result in significant improvement in discrimination compared with VACS Index 2.0 alone for mortality (C-statistic 0.767 vs 0.758) or for HD (C-statistic 0.805 vs 0.801). Conclusions:Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and PLR were strongly associated with mortality and HD and weakly correlated with inflammatory biomarkers. However, most of their association was explained by VACS Index 2.0. Addition of NLR and PLR to VACS 2.0 did not substantially improve discrimination for either outcome
