Behavior in Organizations -9/E
Over the years we’ve taught untold thousands of college students not only facts in figures but, more importantly, how to be critical thinkers and impartial analysts of behavior in organizations. In so doing, we’ve also learned a great deal from them. By Listening care fully to their insights, drawing on their experience, and discussing the world of work with them we’ve come away with a strong sense of what they want to knowabout human dynamics in the work place. After all most of today’s student alrady have a held job, or are working while completing their studies, and chance are that they have given more thanpassing though to jobs they will be performing in the future. As it becomes apperent to students that knowing about the field of organitational behavior (OB) can provide valuableinsight into behavior on the job, we habee bee there to guide them
Adenoma Characteristics at First Colonoscopy as Predictors of Adenoma Recurrence and Characteristics at Follow-Up
All patients with colorectal adenomas may not require identical follow-up. We aimed to determine if adenoma characteristics at initial colonoscopy could predict adenoma recurrence or characteristics at follow-up. The number of adenomas and the size, type, and degree of atypia in 479 patients in a polyp prevention trial were evaluated as predictors of the same characteristics at follow-up using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Strategic toolkits: seniority, usage and performance in the German SME machinery and equipment sector
This paper examines the strategic tool kit, from a human resource management (HRM) perspective, in terms of usage and impact. Research to date has tended to consider usage, assuming to a certain extent that knowledge and understanding of particular tools suggest that practitioners value them. The research on which this paper is based builds upon the idea that usage indicates satisfaction, but develops the usage theme to investigate which decision-makers are actually engaged in both tool appliance and the strategic process. Of particular interest to the researchers are the educational background, age and seniority of the decision-makers. In addition, potential links with HRM and organizational performance are also explored. The context of the research, the German machinery and equipment sector, provides an insight into the industry's ability to sustain growth in face of increasing international competition. The paper calls for a greater awareness, from a human resource perspective, and utilization of strategic management practice and associated decision-making aids
Control-Flow Integrity for Real-Time Embedded Systems
Attacks on real-time embedded systems can endanger lives and critical infrastructure. Despite this, techniques for securing embedded systems software have not been widely studied. Many existing security techniques for general-purpose computers rely on assumptions that do not hold in the embedded case. This paper focuses on one such technique, control-flow integrity (CFI), that has been vetted as an effective countermeasure against control-flow hijacking attacks on general-purpose computing systems. Without the process isolation and fine-grained memory protections provided by a general-purpose computer with a rich operating system, CFI cannot provide any security guarantees. This work proposes RECFISH, a system for providing CFI guarantees on ARM Cortex-R devices running minimal real-time operating systems. We provide techniques for protecting runtime structures, isolating processes, and instrumenting compiled ARM binaries with CFI protection. We empirically evaluate RECFISH and its performance implications for real-time systems. Our results suggest RECFISH can be directly applied to binaries without compromising real-time performance; in a test of over six million realistic task systems running FreeRTOS, 85% were still schedulable after adding RECFISH
Early Ultraviolet, Optical and X-Ray Observations of the Type IIP SN 2005cs in M51 with Swift
We report early photospheric-phase observations of the Type IIP Supernova
(SN) 2005cs obtained by Swift's Ultraviolet-Optical and X-Ray Telescopes.
Observations started within two days of discovery and continued regularly for
three weeks. During this time the V-band magnitude remained essentially
constant, while the UV was initially bright but steadily faded until below the
brightness of an underlying UV-bright HII region. This UV decay is similar to
SNe II observed by the International Ultraviolet Explorer. UV grism spectra
show the P-Cygni absorption of MgII 2798A, indicating a photospheric origin of
the UV flux. Based on non-LTE model atmosphere calculations with the CMFGEN
code, we associate the rapid evolution of the UV flux with the cooling of the
ejecta, the peak of the spectral energy distribution (SED) shifting from ~700A
on June 30th to ~1200A on July 5th. Furthermore, the corresponding
recombination of the ejecta, e.g., the transition from FeIII to FeII, induces
considerable strengthening of metal line-blanketing at and above the
photosphere, blocking more effectively this fading UV flux. SN2005cs was not
detected in X-rays, and the upper limit to the X-ray luminosity yields a limit
to the mass loss rate of the progenitor of about 10^-5 solar masses per year.
Overall, Swift presents a unique opportunity to capture the early and fast
evolution of Type II SNe in the UV, providing additional constraints on the
reddening, the SED shortward of 4000A, and the ionization state and temperature

Detecting the Companions and Ellipsoidal Variations of RS CVn Primaries: I. sigma Geminorum
To measure the properties of both components of the RS CVn binary sigma
Geminorum (sigma Gem), we directly detect the faint companion, measure the
orbit, obtain model-independent masses and evolutionary histories, detect
ellipsoidal variations of the primary caused by the gravity of the companion,
and measure gravity darkening. We detect the companion with interferometric
observations obtained with the Michigan InfraRed Combiner (MIRC) at Georgia
State University's Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) Array
with a primary-to-secondary H-band flux ratio of 270+/-70. A radial velocity
curve of the companion was obtained with spectra from the Tillinghast Reflector
Echelle Spectrograph (TRES) on the 1.5-m Tillinghast Reflector at Fred Lawrence
Whipple Observatory (FLWO). We additionally use new observations from the
Tennessee State University Automated Spectroscopic and Photometric Telescopes
(AST and APT, respectively). From our orbit, we determine model-independent
masses of the components (M_1 = 1.28 +/- 0.07 M_Sun, M_2 = 0.73 +/- 0.03
M_Sun), and estimate a system age of 5 -/+ 1 Gyr. An average of the 27-year APT
light curve of sigma Gem folded over the orbital period (P = 19.6027 +/- 0.0005
days) reveals a quasi-sinusoidal signature, which has previously been
attributed to active longitudes 180 deg apart on the surface of sigma Gem. With
the component masses, diameters, and orbit, we find that the predicted light
curve for ellipsoidal variations due to the primary star partially filling its
Roche lobe potential matches well with the observed average light curve,
offering a compelling alternative explanation to the active longitudes
hypothesis. Measuring gravity darkening from the light curve gives beta < 0.1,
a value slightly lower than that expected from recent theory.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 11 pages, 6 figures, 8 table
Randomized controlled trials: who fails run-in?
Background: Early identification of participants at risk of run-in failure (RIF) may present opportunities to improve trial efficiency and generalizability. Methods: We conducted a partial factorial-design, randomized, controlled trial of calcium and vitamin D to prevent colorectal adenoma recurrence at 11 centers in the United States. At baseline, participants completed two self-administered questionnaires (SAQs) and a questionnaire administered by staff. Participants in the full factorial randomization (calcium, vitamin D, both, or neither) received a placebo during a 3-month single-blinded run-in; women electing to take calcium enrolled in a two-group randomization (calcium with vitamin D, or calcium alone) and received calcium during the run-in. Using logistic regression models, we examined baseline factors associated with RIF in three subgroups: men (N = 1606) and women (N = 301) in the full factorial randomization and women in the two-group randomization (N = 666). Results: Overall, 314/2573 (12 %) participants failed run-in; 211 (67 %) took fewer than 80 % of their tablets (poor adherence), and 103 (33 %) withdrew or were uncooperative. In multivariable models, 8- to 13-fold variation was seen by study center in odds of RIF risk in the two largest groups. In men, RIF decreased with age (adjusted odds ratio [OR] per 5 years 0.85 [95 % confidence interval, CI; 0.76-0.96]) and was associated with being single (OR 1.65 [95 % CI; 1.10-2.47]), not graduating from high school (OR 2.77 [95 % CI; 1.58-4.85]), and missing SAQ data (OR 1.97 [1.40-2.76]). Among women, RIF was associated primarily with health-related factors; RIF risk was lower with higher physical health score (OR 0.73 [95 % CI; 0.62-0.86]) and baseline multivitamin use (OR 0.44 [95 % CI; 0.26-0.75]). Women in the 5-year colonoscopy surveillance interval were at greater risk of RIF than those with 3-year follow-up (OR 1.91 [95 % CI; 1.08-3. 37]), and the number of prescription medicines taken was also positively correlated with RIF (p = 0.03). Perceived toxicities during run-in were associated with 12- to 29-fold significantly increased odds of RIF. Conclusions: There were few common baseline predictors of run-in failure in the three randomization groups. However, heterogeneity in run-in failure associated with study center, and missing SAQ data reflect potential opportunities for intervention to improve trial efficiency and retention
