    Fluence and polarisation dependence of GaAs based Lateral Photo-Dember terahertz emitters

    We characterise THz output of lateral photo-Dember (LPD) emitters based on semi-insulating (SI), unannealed and annealed low temperature grown (LTG) GaAs. Saturation of THz pulse power with optical fluence is observed, with unannealed LTG GaAs showing highest saturation fluence at 1.1 ± 0.1 mJ cm-2. SI-GaAs LPD emitters show a flip in signal polarity with optical fluence that is attributed to THz emission from the metal-semiconductor contact. Variation in optical polarisation affects THz pulse power that is attributed to a local optical excitation near the metal contact

    Exploration for magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE sulphide deposits : a review of recent advances in the use of geochemical tools, and their application to some South African ores

    Most major magmatic Cu-Ni-PGE sulphide deposits are thought to have formed by segregation of an immiscible sulphide melt from a silicate host magma, in response to processes such as magma mixing, rapid cooling, differentiation, and contamination. The metal content of the sulphides is governed by the concentration of the metals in the silicate host magma, the sulphide melt/silicate melt partition coefficients (D values) of the metals, and the R-factor during sulphide segregation. Fractionation between the metals occurs during partial melting of the upper mantle source, crystallization of oxides, platinum-group minerals (PGM), and silicates (mainly olivine and less so orthopyroxene), segregation of sulphide melt, and crystallization of the sulphide melt. The latter process may yield zoned ore bodies consisting of Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Fe, (Ni)-rich monosulphide solid solution (mss) cumulate ore and fractionated sulphide ore rich in Cu, Pt, and Pd. It is possible to model these processes and thereby to estimate the potential of a magmatic body to host economic Cu-Ni-PGE sulphide deposits. The location of Cu-Ni-PGE sulphide ores may be facilitated by applying a number of geochemical tools. PGE-rich horizons within layered intrusions are particularly difficult to locate because the ore zones are generally thin compared to the thickness of the intrusions. Variation in Cu/Pd ratios of the silicate rocks may delineate the position of some of these horizons, since the strongly chalcophile Pd is preferentially depleted during sulphide segregation, resulting in an increase in Cu/Pd of the subsequently crystallizing overlying cumulates. Cu/Pd ratios may also be applied in sill-like bodies such as the Uitkomst intrusion, Mpumalanga, to estimate the potential for conduit-type deposits, and in lavas where they may help to locate possible Noril'sk-type mineralized feeder zones to basalt flows. Other methods of determining whether igneous bodies have experienced magma mixing and sulphide segregation are based on Ni contents of olivines, Ti contents, and Cr/Fe ratios of spinels, and petrographic features such as the presence of plagioclase inclusions within ferromagnesian phases. Se/S ratios may help to determine whether magmatic sulphide ores underwent post-magmatic (metamorphic or hydrothermal) sulphur loss. They may also discriminate between a magmatic or sedimentary source of the S, and between a magmatic or hydrothermal origin of the metals. Hydrothermal sulphide ores may further be distinguished from magmatic ores by means of significantly higher Cu/Ni and Pd/Ir ratios of the former. Such distinction is important because it would be futile to investigate hydrothermal deposits for magmatic ore zonation

    This communication reports the -A isotherms and spectroscopic characterizations of mixed Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of nonamphiphilic 2, -biquinoline (BQ) molecules, mixed with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and stearic acid (SA). The pi-A isotherms and molefraction versus area per molecule studies indicate complete immiscibility of sample (BQ) and matrix (PMMA or SA) molecules. This immiscibility may lead to the formation of microcrystalline aggregates of BQ molecules in the mixed LB films. The scanning electron micrograph gives the visual evidence of microcrystalline aggregates of BQ molecules in the mixed LB films. UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence and excitation spectroscopic studies reveal the nature of these microcrystalline aggregates. LB films lifted at higher surface pressure indicate the formation of dimer or higher order n-mers.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure

    Fokker-Planck Equation for Boltzmann-type and Active Particles: transfer probability approach

    Fokker-Planck equation with the velocity-dependent coefficients is considered for various isotropic systems on the basis of probability transition (PT) approach. This method provides the self-consistent and universal description of friction and diffusion for Brownian particles. Renormalization of the friction coefficient is shown to occur for two dimensional (2-D) and three dimensional (3-D) cases, due to the tensorial character of diffusion. The specific forms of PT are calculated for the Boltzmann-type of collisions and for the absorption-type of collisions (the later are typical for dusty plasmas and some other systems). Validity of the Einstein's relation for the Boltzmann-type collisions is analyzed for the velocity-dependent friction and diffusion coefficients. For the Boltzmann-type collisions in the region of very high grain velocity as well as it is always for non-Boltzmann collisions, such as, e.g., absorption collisions, the Einstein relation is violated, although some other relations (determined by the structure of PT) can exist. The generalized friction force is investigated in dusty plasma in the framework of the PT approach. The relation between this force, negative collecting friction force and scattering and collecting drag forces is established.+AFwAXA- The concept of probability transition is used to describe motion of active particles in an ambient medium. On basis of the physical arguments the PT for a simple model of the active particle is constructed and the coefficients of the relevant Fokker-Planck equation are found.     The Uitkomst intrusion and Nkomati Ni-Cu-Cr-PGE deposit, South Africa: trace element geochemistry, Nd isotopes and high-precision geochronology

    The Uitkomst intrusion is a tubular mafic-ultramafic layered body that hosts one of South Africa’s largest Ni-Cu-Cr-PGE deposits, Nkomati. The sulphide ore occurs in the form of massive lenses in the immediate quartzitic footwall and as disseminations within peridotite. The chromite ore forms an up to ∼10-m-thick layer in the lower portion of the intrusion. Uitkomst has generally been interpreted as a magma conduit, possibly related to the Bushveld event. Here, we present a new high-precision U-Pb zircon date of 2057.64 ± 0.69 Ma that overlaps with the age of the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Complex and thus demonstrates a coeval relationship between the intrusions. Based on incompatible trace elements as well as O- and Nd isotope data (εNd −4.5 to −6.2), we show that the Uitkomst parent magmas were contaminated with up to 20% Archean upper crust prior to emplacement, and with up to 15% dolomitic country rock during emplacement. Ore formation at Nkomati was critically aided by substantial devolatisation and removal of dolomitic floor rocks leading to hydrodynamic concentration of sulphide and chromite during slumping of crystal mushes into the trough-like centre of the subsiding intrusion and its footwall

    Hole dynamics in a quantum antiferromagnet beyond the retraceable path approximation

    The one-hole spectral weight for two chains and two dimensional lattices is studied numerically using a new method of analysis of the spectral function within the Lanczos iteration scheme: the Lanczos spectra decoding method. This technique is applied to the t−Jzt-J_z model for Jz→0J_z \to 0, directly in the infinite size lattice. By a careful investigation of the first 13 Lanczos steps and the first 26 ones for the two dimensional and the two chain cases respectively, we get several new features of the one-hole spectral weight. A sharp incoherent peak with a clear momentum dispersion is identified, together with a second broad peak at higher energy. The spectral weight is finite up to the Nagaoka energy where it vanishes in a non-analytic way. Thus the lowest energy of one hole in a quantum antiferromagnet is degenerate with the Nagaoka energy in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: RevTeX 3.0, SISSA preprint 156/93/CM/MB, 10 pages + postscript file appended, contains more accurate calculations in Fig.

    1°C warming increases spatial competition frequency and complexity in Antarctic marine macrofauna

    Environmental conditions of the Southern Ocean around Antarctica have varied little for >5 million years but are now changing. Here we investigated how warming affects competition for space. Little considered in the polar regions, this is a critical component of biodiversity response. Change in competition in response to environment forcing might be detectable earlier than individual species presence/absence or performance measures (e.g. growth). Examination of fauna on artificial substrata in Antarctica’s shallows at ambient or warmed temperature found that, mid-century predicted 1°C warming (throughout the year or just summer-only), increased the probability of individuals encountering spatial competition, as well as density and complexity of such interactions. 2°C, late century predicted warming, increased variance in the probability and density of competition, but overall, competition did not significantly differ from ambient (control) levels.     Chromospheric activity has been thought to decay smoothly with time and, hence, to be a viable age indicator.     Kaon-Nucleon Scattering Amplitudes and Z∗^*-Enhancements from Quark Born Diagrams

    We derive closed form kaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes using the ``quark Born diagram" formalism, which describes the scattering as a single interaction (here the OGE spin-spin term) followed by quark line rearrangement. The low energy I=0 and I=1 S-wave KN phase shifts are in reasonably good agreement with experiment given conventional quark model parameters. For klab>0.7k_{lab}> 0.7 Gev however the I=1 elastic phase shift is larger than predicted by Gaussian wavefunctions, and we suggest possible reasons for this discrepancy. Equivalent low energy KN potentials for S-wave scattering are also derived. Finally we consider OGE forces in the related channels KΔ\Delta, K∗^*N and K∗Δ^*\Delta, and determine which have attractive interactions and might therefore exhibit strong threshold enhancements or ``Z∗^*-molecule" meson-baryon bound states. We find that the minimum-spin, minimum-isospin channels and two additional K∗Δ^*\Delta channels are most conducive to the formation of bound states.     Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System

    The exclusive reaction π−p→ηπ0n\pi^- p \to \eta \pi^0 n, η→π+π−π0\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0 at 18 GeV/c/c has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample of 23~492 ηπ0n\eta \pi^0 n events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the P+P_+ wave, thus providing evidence for a neutral exotic meson with JPC=1−+J^{PC} = 1^{-+}, a mass of 1257±20±251257 \pm 20 \pm 25 MeV/c2/c^2, and a width of 354±64±60354 \pm 64 \pm 60 MeV/c2/c^2.
