    Creating Connection through Dance/Movement Therapy among Older Adults with Dementia: Development of a Method

    The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of Dance/movement therapy (D/MT) with a focus on sensory stimulation among individuals living with dementia to promote a higher level of engagement, connection, and reminiscence. This thesis will provide a literature review on the challenges that individuals living with dementia experience and the importance of a person-centered approach to care that is grounded in relationship (Newman-Bluestein & Chang, 2017). Additionally, the role that Dance/movement therapy plays among people with dementia and the benefits of sensory stimulation within this population are also included. Finally, a Dance/movement therapy intervention that was implemented at an affordable housing community in the Boston area among a diverse, low-income group of older adults with mild to severe dementia in February and March 2020 will be presented. A Chacian structure was implemented with a focus on touch through the use of props, hand holding, and self-massage, as well as stimulation through music, encouraging reminiscence. The observations indicated valuable benefits for group participants, confirming a need for further research to be conducted on the benefits of D/MT among this specific population

    Functional Modeling Identifies Paralogous Solanesyl-diphosphate Synthases That Assemble the Side Chain of Plastoquinone-9 in Plastids

    Background: Plastid isoforms of solanesyl-diphosphate synthase catalyze the elongation of the prenyl side chain of plastoquinone-9. Results: Corresponding mutants display lower levels of plastoquinone-9 and plastochromanol-8 and display intact levels of vitamin E. Conclusion: Plastochromanol-8 originates from a subfraction of non-photoactive plastoquinol-9 and is not essential for seed longevity. Significance: Viable plastoquinone-9 mutants are invaluable tools for understanding plastid metabolism

    Test-retest repeatability of ADC in prostate using the multi b-Value VERDICT acquisition

    Purpose: VERDICT (Vascular, Extracellular, Restricted Diffusion for Cytometry in Tumours) MRI is a multi b-value, variable diffusion time DWI sequence that allows generation of ADC maps from different b-value and diffusion time combinations. The aim was to assess precision of prostate ADC measurements from varying b-value combinations using VERDICT and determine which protocol provides the most repeatable ADC. // Materials and Methods: Forty-one men (median age: 67.7 years) from a prior prospective VERDICT study (April 2016–October 2017) were analysed retrospectively. Men who were suspected of prostate cancer and scanned twice using VERDICT were included. ADC maps were formed using 5b-value combinations and the within-subject standard deviations (wSD) were calculated per ADC map. Three anatomical locations were analysed per subject: normal TZ (transition zone), normal PZ (peripheral zone), and index lesions. Repeated measures ANOVAs showed which b-value range had the lowest wSD, Spearman correlation and generalized linear model regression analysis determined whether wSD was related to ADC magnitude and ROI size. // Results: The mean lesion ADC for b0 b1500 had the lowest wSD in most zones (0.18–0.58x10-4 mm2/s). The wSD was unaffected by ADC magnitude (Lesion: p = 0.064, TZ: p = 0.368, PZ: p = 0.072) and lesion Likert score (p = 0.95). wSD showed a decrease with ROI size pooled over zones (p = 0.019, adjusted regression coefficient = -1.6x10-3, larger ROIs for TZ versus PZ versus lesions). ADC maps formed with a maximum b-value of 500 s/mm2 had the largest wSDs (1.90–10.24x10-4 mm2/s). // Conclusion: ADC maps generated from b0 b1500 have better repeatability in normal TZ, normal PZ, and index lesions

    PET Reconstruction With an Anatomical MRI Prior Using Parallel Level Sets.

    The combination of positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers unique possibilities. In this paper we aim to exploit the high spatial resolution of MRI to enhance the reconstruction of simultaneously acquired PET data. We propose a new prior to incorporate structural side information into a maximum a posteriori reconstruction. The new prior combines the strengths of previously proposed priors for the same problem: it is very efficient in guiding the reconstruction at edges available from the side information and it reduces locally to edge-preserving total variation in the degenerate case when no structural information is available. In addition, this prior is segmentation-free, convex and no a priori assumptions are made on the correlation of edge directions of the PET and MRI images. We present results for a simulated brain phantom and for real data acquired by the Siemens Biograph mMR for a hardware phantom and a clinical scan. The results from simulations show that the new prior has a better trade-off between enhancing common anatomical boundaries and preserving unique features than several other priors. Moreover, it has a better mean absolute bias-to-mean standard deviation trade-off and yields reconstructions with superior relative l2-error and structural similarity index. These findings are underpinned by the real data results from a hardware phantom and a clinical patient confirming that the new prior is capable of promoting well-defined anatomical boundaries.This research was funded by the EPSRC (EP/K005278/1) and EP/H046410/1 and supported by the National Institute for Health Research University College London Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre.     Resolution of the type material of the Asian elephant, Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 (Proboscidea, Elephantidae)

    The understanding of Earth’s biodiversity depends critically on the accurate identification and nomenclature of species. Many species were described centuries ago, and in a surprising number of cases their nomenclature or type material remain unclear or inconsistent. A prime example is provided by Elephas maximus, one of the most iconic and well-known mammalian species, described and named by Linnaeus (1758) and today designating the Asian elephant. We used morphological, ancient DNA (aDNA), and high-throughput ancient proteomic analyses to demonstrate that a widely discussed syntype specimen of E. maximus, a complete foetus preserved in ethanol, is actually an African elephant, genus Loxodonta. We further discovered that an additional E. maximus syntype, mentioned in a description by John Ray (1693) cited by Linnaeus, has been preserved as an almost complete skeleton at the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence. Having confirmed its identity as an Asian elephant through both morphological and ancient DNA analyses, we designate this specimen as the lectotype of E. maximus

    The MATISSE study: a randomised trial of group art therapy for people with schizophrenia.

Group Art Therapy has been widely used as an adjunctive treatment for people with schizophrenia but there have been few attempts to examine its effects and cost effectiveness has not been examined. The MATISSE study aims to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of group Art Therapy for people with schizophrenia. METHOD/DESIGN: The MATISSE study is a three-arm, parallel group, pragmatic, randomised, controlled trial of referral to group Art Therapy plus standard care, referral to an attention control 'activity' group plus standard care, or standard care alone. Study participants were recruited from inpatient and community-based mental health and social care services at four centres in England and Northern Ireland. Participants were aged over 18 years with a clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia, confirmed by an examination of case notes using operationalised criteria. Participants were then randomised via an independent and remote telephone randomisation service using permuted stacked blocks, stratified by site. Art Therapy and activity groups were made available to participants once a week for up to 12 months. Outcome measures were assessed by researchers masked to allocation status at 12 and 24 months after randomisation. Participants and care givers were aware which arm of the trial participants were allocated to. The primary outcomes for the study are global functioning (measured using the Global Assessment of Functioning scale) and mental health symptoms (measured using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale) assessed at 24 months. Secondary outcomes were assessed at 12 and 24 months and comprise levels of group attendance, social function, satisfaction with care, mental wellbeing, and costs.     Extensional flows and the underlying stability/instability mechanisms are of extreme relevance to the efficient operation of inkjet printing, coating processes and drug delivery systems, as well as for the generation of micro droplets. The development of an extensional rheometer to characterize the extensional properties of low viscosity fluids has therefore stimulated great interest of researchers, particularly in the last decade. Microfluidics has proven to be an extraordinary working platform and different configurations of potential extensional microrheometers have been proposed.     2018 International Atmospheric Rivers Conference: Multi‐disciplinary studies and high‐impact applications of atmospheric rivers

    Atmospheric rivers (ARs) play a vital role in shaping the hydroclimate of many regions globally, and can substantially impact water resource management, emergency response planning, and other socioeconomic entities. The second International Atmospheric Rivers Conference took place at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, during 25–28 June, 2018, in La Jolla, California, USA. It was sponsored by the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). A total of 120 people attended the Conference with 94 abstracts submitted and 30 participating students. In addition to the conference, the Student Forecasting Workshop was organised in the same week. During this workshop, students were exposed to AR forecasting tools, and learned examples of how these tools could be used to make decisions for various applications. The main goals of this conference were to bring together experts from across the fields of hydrology, atmospheric, oceanic, and polar sciences, as well as water management, civil engineering, and ecology to advance the state of AR science and to explore the future directions for the field. The conference was organised into traditional oral and poster presentations, along with panel discussions and Breakout Groups. This format allowed enhanced interaction between participants, driving progress within the scientific community and the enhanced communication of societal needs by various stakeholders. Several emerging topics of research were highlighted, including subseasonal‐to‐seasonal (S2S) prediction of ARs and an overview of the AR Reconnaissance campaign.
