Giant water bugs (Belostomatidae) have important functions in aquatic ecosystems with wide tropical and subtropical distribution. This study describes the spermatozoa morphology of the predator B. anurum. The spermatozoa have not polymorphism and they are scattered without bundles into the seminal vesicle. The mean length of the spermatozoa is 510 μm, including the 35 μm length of the nucleus, which is the longest germ cell, reported for Belostomatidae. The head of the spermatozoa is formed by the acrosome and the nucleus with strongly condensed chromatin. In the nucleus–flagellar transition occurs a C-shaped centriole adjunct, partially surrounding the posterior end of the nucleus and totally surrounding the anterior ends of the two mitochondrial derivatives. In the flagellum, the axoneme has a 9 + 9 + 2 microtubular pattern, and it is linked to the two mitochondrial derivatives by protein bridges. The mitochondrial derivatives are symmetrical surrounding almost entirely the axoneme. The morphology of B. anurum spermatozoa differs from those found in other Pentatomomorpha by the acrosome that does not protrude along with the nucleus and by the single centriole adjunct. © 2020 Elsevier Gmb

Evaluation of the influence of fluoroquinolone chemical structure on stability: forced degradation and in silico studies

Fluoroquinolones are a known antibacterial class commonly used around the world. These compounds present relative stability and they may show some adverse effects according their distinct chemical structures. The chemical hydrolysis of five fluoroquinolones was studied using alkaline and photolytic degradation aiming to observe the differences in molecular reactivity. DFT/B3LYP-6.31G* was used to assist with understanding the chemical structure degradation. Gemifloxacin underwent degradation in alkaline medium. Gemifloxacin and danofloxacin showed more degradation perceptual indices in comparison with ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin in photolytic conditions. Some structural features were observed which may influence degradation, such as the presence of five member rings attached to the quinolone ring and the electrostatic positive charges, showed in maps of potential electrostatic charges. These measurements may be used in the design of effective and more stable fluoroquinolones as well as the investigation of degradation products from stress stability assays

Introduction: This study aimed to compare the results of professional technical and anthropometric anamnesis data with the transmission of external chest compressions performed by military firefighters at different execution times. Objective: The objective was to evaluate the performance and perceived effort of the sequence of external chest compressions performed in two minutes, as well as the evolution of the technique over time. Materials and methods: This was a descriptive, correlational study involving adult firefighters who were members of a specific firefighter group, comprising a population of 105 individuals with a voluntary sample of 44 participants. The study used a Bayesian statistical approach to provide probabilistic expressions. Results: The participants had an average work experience of 17 years, an average age of 38.6 years, an average weight of 81.48 kilograms, an average height of 176 centimeters, and an average of 2.5 qualifications. The results indicated that the firefighters performed external chest compressions with excellent technique and a moderate level of perceived effort in a two-minute evaluation. The evaluation of the evolution of the technique over time showed that the participants were able to maintain high-quality compressions for an average of 6 minutes, with a maximum of 20 uninterrupted minutes. Conclusion: The study underscores the critical role of professional firefighters in performing and maintaining high-quality external chest compressions, which has the potential to reduce morbidity and mortality in cases of cardiorespiratory arrest

Metabolismo e importância da arginina na nutrição de suínos

The swine nutrition in recent years has been the focus of several experimental studies, especially in relation to protein and amino acid nutrition. In this context, arginine is one of the amino acid in increasing research, which metabolism is dynamic, participating in several metabolic pathways and generating numerous compounds. The arginine synthesis occurs primarily in the intestinal-renal axis, where lining cells from the small intestine produce citrulline and proximal tubule cells from kidney extract citrulline from the bloodstream, converting it into arginine, returning it to circulation. Arginine is chemically named 2-Amino-5-Guanidopentanoic Acid, and it is a conditionally nonessential amino acid for pigs, considering that is required primarily from 3 to 21 days age when the animal organism is capable of synthesizing about 60% of its requirements. Thus, arginine supplementation in diets for pregnant and lactating sows has been a tool to increase the performance of nursing piglets. However, there are evidences that high levels of arginine in the diet can cause an antagonism to the lysine, which is the first limiting amino acid for pigs, and it could adversely affect animal performance. Thus, this literature review aims to elucidate the arginine metabolism in swines, evidencing the importance of this amino acid in the nutrition of these animals. &nbsp

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate tiller population density and the dynamics of the tillering process in marandu palisade grass subjected to strategies of rotational stocking management and nitrogen fertilization. Treatments corresponded to combinations between two targets of pre-grazing conditions (sward surface height of 25 and 35 cm) and two rates of nitrogen application (50 and 200 kg ha-1 year-1), and were allocated to experimental units according to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement in a randomised complete block design, with four replications. The following response variables were studied: initial (TPDi), intermediate (TPDm) and final (TPDf) tiller population density as well as the rates of tiller appearance (TAR) and death (TDR) and the tiller population stability index (SI). TPDi was similar to all treatments, with differences in tiller population density becoming more pronounced as the experiment progressed, resulting in larger TPDf on swards managed at 25 cm pre-grazing height. Tiller death was larger on swards managed at 35 cm, with differences in tiller appearance being recorded only from February 2010 onwards. Stability of tiller population was higher on swards managed at 25 cm pre-grazing height. Overall, there was no effect of nitrogen on the studied variables, and the most adequate grazing strategy corresponded to the pre-grazing height of 25 cm, regardless of the nitrogen application rate used
