    Acyclic orientations with path constraints

    Get PDF
Many well-known combinatorial optimization problems can be stated over the set of acyclic orientations of an undirected graph. For example, acyclic orientations with certain diameter constraints are closely related to the optimal solutions of the vertex coloring and frequency assignment problems. In this paper we introduce a linear programming formulation of acyclic orientations with path constraints, and discuss its use in the solution of the vertex coloring problem and some versions of the frequency assignment problem. A study of the polytope associated with the formulation is presented, including proofs of which constraints of the formulation are facet-defining and the introduction of new classes of valid inequalities

Experimental analysis of lateral impact on planar brittle material: spatial properties of the cracks

    Get PDF
The breakup of glass and alumina plates due to planar impacts on one of their lateral sides is studied. Particular attention is given to investigating the spatial location of the cracks within the plates. Analysis based on a phenomenological model suggests that bifurcations along the cracks' paths are more likely to take place closer to the impact region than far away from it, i. e., the bifurcation probability seems to lower as the perpendicular distance from the impacted lateral in- creases. It is also found that many observables are not sensitive to the plate material used in this work, as long as the fragment multiplicities corresponding to the fragmentation of the plates are similar. This gives support to the universal properties of the fragmentation process reported in for- mer experiments. However, even under the just mentioned circumstances, some spatial observables are capable of distinguishing the material of which the plates are made and, therefore, it suggests that this universality should be carefully investigated

GHASP: an Hα\alpha kinematic survey of spiral galaxies - X. Surface photometry, decompositions and the Tully-Fisher relation in the Rc-band

We present Rc-band surface photometry for 170 of the 203 galaxies in GHASP, Gassendi H-Alpha survey of SPirals, a sample of late-type galaxies for which high-resolution Fabry-Perot H{\alpha} maps have previously been obtained. Our data set is constructed by new Rc-band observations taken at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP), supplemented with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) archival data, obtained with the purpose of deriving homogeneous photometric profiles and parameters. Our results include Rc-band surface brightness profiles for 170 galaxies and ugrizugriz profiles for 108 of these objects. We catalogue several parameters of general interest for further reference, such as total magnitude, effective radius and isophotal parameters -- magnitude, position angle, ellipticity and inclination. We also perform a structural decomposition of the surface brightness profiles using a multi-component method in order to separate disks from bulges and bars, and to observe the main scaling relations involving luminosities, sizes and maximum velocities. We determine the Rc-band Tully Fisher relation using maximum velocities derived solely from Hα\alpha rotation curves for a sample of 80 galaxies, resulting in a slope of 8.1±0.5-8.1 \pm 0.5, zero point of 3.0±1.0-3.0 \pm 1.0 and an estimated intrinsic scatter of 0.28±0.070.28 \pm 0.07. We note that, different from the TF-relation in the near-infrared derived for the same sample, no change in the slope of the relation is seen at the low-mass end (for galaxies with Vmax<125V_{max} < 125 km/s). We suggest that this different behaviour of the Tully Fisher relation (with the optical relation being described by a single power-law while the near-infrared by two) may be caused by differences in the stellar mass to light ratio for galaxies with Vmax<125V_{max} < 125 km/s.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figure

    Gravitation and Duality Symmetry

By generalizing the Hodge dual operator to the case of soldered bundles, and working in the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, an analysis of the duality symmetry in gravitation is performed. Although the basic conclusion is that, at least in the general case, gravitation is not dual symmetric, there is a particular theory in which this symmetry shows up. It is a self dual (or anti-self dual) teleparallel gravity in which, due to the fact that it does not contribute to the interaction of fermions with gravitation, the purely tensor part of torsion is assumed to vanish. The ensuing fermionic gravitational interaction is found to be chiral. Since duality is intimately related to renormalizability, this theory may eventually be more amenable to renormalization than teleparallel gravity or general relativity.Comment: 7 pages, no figures. Localizing gravity on thick branes: a solution for massive KK modes of the Schroedinger equation

We generate scalar thick brane configurations in a 5D Riemannian space time which describes gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field. We also show that 4D gravity can be localized on a thick brane which does not necessarily respect Z_2-symmetry, generalizing several previous models based on the Randall-Sundrum system and avoiding the restriction to orbifold geometries as well as the introduction of the branes in the action by hand. We begin by obtaining a smooth brane configuration that preserves 4D Poincar'e invariance and violates reflection symmetry along the fifth dimension. The extra dimension can have either compact or extended topology, depending on the values of the parameters of the solution. In the non-compact case, our field configuration represents a thick brane with positive energy density centered at y=c_2, whereas in the compact case we get pairs of thick branes. We recast as well the wave equations of the transverse traceless modes of the linear fluctuations of the classical solution into a Schroedinger's equation form with a volcano potential of finite bottom. We solve Schroedinger equation for the massless zero mode m^2=0 and obtain a single bound wave function which represents a stable 4D graviton and is free of tachyonic modes with m^2<0. We also get a continuum spectrum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) states with m^2>0 that are suppressed at y=c_2 and turn asymptotically into plane waves. We found a particular case in which the Schroedinger equation can be solved for all m^2>0, giving us the opportunity of studying analytically the massive modes of the spectrum of KK excitations, a rare fact when considering thick brane configurations.Comment: 8 pages in latex. We corrected signs in the field equations, the expressions for the scalar field and the self-interacting potential. Due to the fact that no changes are introduced in the warp factor, the physics of the system remains the sam
