One pion production in neutrino-nucleon scattering and the different parametrizations of the weak vertex
The weak vertex provides an important contribution to the one
pion production in neutrino-nucleon and neutrino-nucleus scattering for
invariant masses below 1.4 GeV. Beyond its interest as a tool in neutrino
detection and their background analyses, one pion production in
neutrino-nucleon scattering is useful to test predictions based on the quark
model and other internal symmetries of strong interactions. Here we try to
establish a connection between two commonly used parametrizations of the weak
vertex and form factors (FF) and we study their effects on the
determination of the axial coupling , the common normalization of the
axial FF, which is predicted to hold 1.2 by using the PCAC hypothesis.
Predictions for the total cross sections within
the two approaches, which include the resonant and other
background contributions in a coherent way, are compared to experimental data.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
CC and NC pion production
The disappearance searching experiments nu_mu ---> nu_x use charged current quasielastic (CCQE) reaction to detect an arriving neutrino and reconstruct its energy, while the CC1 pi^+ production can mimic the CCQE signal process. In nu_mu --->nu_e appearance experiments, the NC1 pi^0 production process can lead to a fake e^- event by the impossibility for the detector of distinguish an arriving electron or a photon. Here we present a consistent model, from the point of view of the construction of the elemental amplitude, for the mentioned pion production background processes including bounding, smearing and final state interaction (FSI) effects in a single fashion. Results are comparable with more evolved approaches based on Monte Carlo simulations.Fil: Mariano, Alejandro Edgardo. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY OF ORGANIC ACIDS AND THEIR IMPACT ON WOOD DECAY RESISTANCE
Organic acids are present in many bio-based chemicals suggested as active ingredients for wood preservative formulations, but their effects in wood have not been studied. However, an understanding of their effect in wood is necessary. The aim of this study was to determine the antifungal and wood-preserving activities in vitro of acetic, formic, and propionic acids against the wood-decaying fungi Coniophora puteana, Rhodonia (Poria) placenta, Gloeophyullum trabeum, and Trametes versicolor. Mixes of these three acids were also tested for possible synergetic effects. All the acids and mixtures showed antifungal activity against the pure cultures of wood-decaying fungi. Propionic acid by itself had the best performance, inhibiting at 1 g/L concentration the growth of all the decay fungi by 99-100%. Despite the antifungal activity of the organic acids, the pine sapwood specimens treated with 3% and 6% acid solutions and exposed to decay by C. Puteana and G. trabeum did not differ significantly from the untreated pine. Leaching of the sapwood specimens caused an incremental mass loss of the sapwood specimens. In addition, the leached specimens had a lower mass than the specimens before the acid impregnation, indicating that they were damaged by the acidic chemicals. The presence and acidity of organic acids in wood-derived bio0-based chemicals need to be assessed before they are used as wood preservatives.

An accelerated MDM algorithm for SVM training
This is an electronic version of the paper presented at the 16th European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, held in Bruges on 2018In this work we will propose an acceleration procedure for the
Mitchell–Demyanov–Malozemov (MDM) algorithm (a fast geometric algorithm
for SVM construction) that may yield quite large training savings.
While decomposition algorithms such as SVMLight or SMO are usually the
SVM methods of choice, we shall show that there is a relationship between
SMO and MDM that suggests that, at least in their simplest implementations,
they should have similar training speeds. Thus, and although we
will not discuss it here, the proposed MDM acceleration might be used as
a starting point to new ways of accelerating SMO.With partial support of Spain’s TIN 2004–07676 and TIN 2007–66862 projects. The first

Double beta decay of Σ-hyperons
We compute the strangeness-conserving double beta decay of Σ- hyperons, which is the only hadronic system that can undergo such decays. We consider both, the lepton number conserving Σ- → Σ+e-e-νν (ββΣ2ν) and the lepton number violating Σ- → Σ+e-e- (ββΣ0ν) modes. The branching ratios of these ββ decays are suppressed at the level of 10-30 considering a light neutrino scenario in the case of the ββΣ0ν channel. The dynamical origin of such low rates and their possible enhancements are briefly discussed. Given its simplicity those decays can be used also for the purposes of illustrating the main features of double beta decays.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
