Hope is a neglected topic in philosophy. This article tries to show that hope belongs to the human form of life. We start with Wittgenstein's remark that human beings hope, while crocodiles cannot and explore the nature of hoping via three different routes: Firstly, we discuss the question whether hope is an emotion or a more or less rational attitude. Secondly, we put forward five characteristics of hope: the possibility of that which is hoped for, the temporality of the object of hope, the connection of hope and action, hope and passivity, and hope's connection to language. Finally, we address the main counterarguments against the value of hope and argue that hope plays an important role in the ability to lead a human life, despite all the criticism it has received in philosophical thinkin

The recognition of the prosodic focus position in German-learning infants from 4 to 14 months

The aim of the present study was to elucidate in a study with 4-, 6-, 8-, and 14-month-old German-learning children, when and how they may acquire the regularities which underlie Focus-to-Stress Alignment (FSA) in the target language, that is, how prosody is associated with specific communicative functions. Our findings suggest, that 14-month-olds have already found out that German allows for variable focus positions, after having gone through a development which goes from a predominantly prosodically driven processing of the input to a processing where prosody interacts more and more with the growing lexical and syntactic knowledge of the child

In “Archetype and Signature” Leslie Fiedler discusses the concepts created by I. A. Richards of “staying inside the poem,” and regarding the poem as an “essential experience.” He further defines Richards “new criticism” by giving it slogan—“a poem should not mean but be.” Ultimately, Fiedler finds both this approach of the work of art and Eliot’s “objective correlative” (a poem succeeds only insofar as it is detached from the subjectivity of its maker) wanting. He sees the poet\u27s life as a “focusing glass” through which all aspects of his work must pass and feels that a sense of the life of the writer will raise the meaning of his work to a higher power. Fiedler concludes then, “It is impossible to draw a line between the work the poet rights and the work he lives, between the life he lives, and the life he writes… the agile critic, therefore must be prepared to move constantly back and forth between life and poem, not in a pointless circle, but in a meaningful spiraling towards the absolute point.

On the sound of snapping shrimp

Fluid dynamics video: Snapping shrimp produce a snapping sound by an extremely rapid closure of their snapper claw. Our high speed imaging of the claw closure has revealed that the sound is generated by the collapse of a cavitation bubble formed in a fast flowing water jet forced out from the claws during claw closure. The produced sound originates from the cavitation collapse of the bubble. At collapse a short flash of light is emitted, just as in single bubble sonoluminescence. A model based on the Rayleigh-Plesset equation can quantitatively account for the visual and acoustical observations.Comment: Fluid dynamics vide

A solar power system for an early Mars expedition

As NASA looks at missions that will expand human presence in the solar system, the power requirements for such missions need to be defined, developed and analyzed. One mission under consideration consists of a 40 day manned Mars surface expedition to perform science experiments. The mission time was centered around an aerocentric longitude (Ls) of 90 deg to lessen the probability of an occurrence of a local or planetary dust storm. The mission site was arbitrarily located at the Martian equator. The power requirements were assumed to be 40 kWe for life support and experiment power during the Martian day and 20 kWe for life support during the Martian night. A solar energy system consisting of roll-out amorphous silicon arrays and a hydrogen-oxygen regenerative fuel cell energy storage system was chosen for the study. The power available from a roll-out array, when plotted against time, approaches a cosine-like curve and depends on both array area and the amount of solar irradiance impinging on its horizontal surface. The array is sized to provide at least 20 KWe when the sun is 12.5 deg above the horizon and ramp up to 140 kWe peak power at Martian noon. In this configuration, the array is capable of supplying 40 KWe continuously to the user for the majority of the Martian day while supplying the excess energy to the electrolyzer portion of the energy storage system. A roll-out, pumped loop radiator system is used to dissipate the waste heat produced by the fuel cell. The power management and distribution system inverts the power from the individual solar array sub-modules and the fuel cell stacks and connects them to a 440 VAC single phase 20 kHz main bus. The total power system is comprised of 80 individual solar array modules with an integral bus and three energy storage modules consisting of fuel cell and electrolyzer stacks, reactant storage tanks, and a roll-out radiator. Power system mass, stowed volume, and deployed area were determined. Day/night power splits of 40/10 kWe, 40/30 kWe, and 40/40 kWe were also considered to determine the impact of a range of nighttime power requirements on the baseline system

Preliminary design of a mobile lunar power supply

A preliminary design for a Stirling isotope power system for use as a mobile lunar power supply is presented. Performance and mass of the components required for the system are estimated. These estimates are based on power requirements and the operating environment. Optimizations routines are used to determine minimum mass operational points. Shielding for the isotope system are given as a function of the allowed dose, distance from the source, and the time spent near the source. The technologies used in the power conversion and radiator systems are taken from ongoing research in the Civil Space Technology Initiative (CSTI) program
