This study aims to describe the political and social conditions in which Lusitania, a Portuguese news agency, was created and developed. This news agency had the main objective to contribute to the strengthening of the Portuguese Empire by dissemination of colonial news in the Portugal and its colonies. Despite the lack of existing studies and not known the whereabouts of the files of the agency, it is still possible through indirect sources to evaluate the importance of the ideological role of this agency in building a Portugal from Minho to Timor, as intended the regime and the founder of the agency, Luís Lupi

An identity discourse: João Canijo and José Gil

    Get PDF
The films of João Canijo are sociological portraits a Portuguese reality in the contemporary world. But in a conscious and deliberate position, Canijo looked at the intricacies of popular culture, locating his narratives in very specific places: the industrial village of Sines ("Black Shoes", 1998), a Portuguese community in the suburbs of Paris ("Get a Life", 2001), a hostess bar somewhere in deep Portugal (“In the Darkness of the Night”, 2004), and finally a village in the countryside (“Misbegotten”, 2007). In these films, Canijo has sought to organize some of the possible signs of what is a national identity: the physical and psychological violence; tormented characters; disruptive families with power confrontations; the junction of the documentary elements in fiction; and the construction of a hyper-realistic cinematography. This poster aims, therefore, to classify Canijo’s positions in these four films, trying to establish some points of contact with one of the most important philosophers that have written about national identity: José Gil

"Do Your Homework": hegemonic discourses on work, in the tabloid media, during the Eurozone Crisis

This article explores hegemonic discourses on productive work and labor, in the context of the Eurozone crisis. Based on the separation between creditor and debtor countries, often associated with Northern and Southern Europe, the coverage of the Portuguese legislative elections of 2011, in the online versions of two tabloid newspapers, the German Bild and the Portuguese Correio da Manhã, was analyzed. The analysis allowed us to identify a hegemonic discourse, transversal to both newspapers, that places work and the consequent accumulation of capital, as the central axis of valuing a society, dividing Europe into compliant (trustworthy) and non-compliant (untrustworthy) countries. In a few instances, we have identified a counter-hegemonic discourse, that values elements beyond productivity, calls into question the need for compliance, and places the root of the crisis in the very system that values development, as promoted in advanced capitalism.publishe

Cultural Studies are presented as an interdisciplinary area, whereby one should not be surprised by the proximity to the theoretical conception of the General Systems Theory we propose, especially regarding to the new fragmented forms of gender identity(ies). This paper discusses the evolution of the traditional concept of gender identity as a system and presents theoretical proposals that seek to resume the discussion and shed light on the controversy related to male and female performances

The Works of Sísifo: Memories and Identities of the Portuguese in Africa according to Fiction Films of the Twentieth Century

The genealogy of Lusophony may be seen as an intersection of different memories, shaped through several temporal strata. The disparate senses of identity that are evoked by those memories are multiple and frequently opposite. The different narratives, that circulate on a given and identified cultural and linguistic space, always use the metaphor of the mirror, where people is seen through the dualities of ‘we/others’, ‘inside/outside’, ‘civilized/ wild’, etc. Far from being a schema only applied to the colonizer/colonized, this paper focuses on how Portuguese identities still live under several aporia in these post-colonial times. It’s inside these dynamic oppositions, mixing imagery, symbols and the reality that identities are built and rebuilt, nowadays under the strong influence of cultural industries that reflect, feed and transform our imagination. It is on this theoretical ground that we will try to understand two particular dimensions of the Portuguese colonial memories, which have left a deep and a long lasting trace in our colonial narratives, and also in colonialist and ‘retornados’ (returnees) identities. Our study will focus on three movies made in Portugal during the 20th century. We conclude that the first and second examples (Chaimite and O Zé do Burro, respectively), compile an individual story and memory of the subjects and the groups which always serve the memories of the History of Portugal and of the Portuguese. On the contrary, the film that we analyzed which was made post-April 25th, Tempestade da Terra, addresses the History, the individual story and the national memory that comprisesmultiple individual stories and diverse memories. Finally, our study reveals the possibility of representing the reality of colonialism and postcolonialism in terms of the great diversity of relations between one side and the other
