    A Lightweight and Accurate Face Detection Algorithm Based on Retinaface

    In this paper, we propose a lightweight and accurate face detection algorithm LAFD (Light and accurate face detection) based on Retinaface. Backbone network in the algorithm is a modified MobileNetV3 network which adjusts the size of the convolution kernel, the channel expansion multiplier of the inverted residuals block and the use of the SE attention mechanism. Deformable convolution network(DCN) is introduced in the context module and the algorithm uses focal loss function instead of cross-entropy loss function as the classification loss function of the model. The test results on the WIDERFACE dataset indicate that the average accuracy of LAFD is 94.1%, 92.2% and 82.1% for the "easy", "medium" and "hard" validation subsets respectively with an improvement of 3.4%, 4.0% and 8.3% compared to Retinaface and 3.1%, 4.1% and 4.1% higher than the well-performing lightweight model, LFFD. If the input image is pre-processed and scaled to 1560px in length or 1200px in width, the model achieves an average accuracy of 86.2% on the 'hard' validation subset.     Full-duplex 60 GHz band dense wavelength division multiplexing star tree architecture for radio-over-fiber systems

    In this work, full-duplex 60GHz DWDM star tree architecture for radio-over-fiber systems is investigated. New approach by using DWDM with the channel spacing of 25 GHz for the first time is proposed to improve the spectral efficiency. The demonstration system consists of 1 central station and 3 base stations as an example. In addition, the remote light source technique is utilized to simplify the architecture of base station (BS) and the external modulation technique is adopted to overcome the fiber chromatic dispersion. Especially, the MZ modulator, configured to generate optical single sideband (OSSB) signal, is adopted in the central station and modulates the optical carrier with the lower sideband (LSB) and upper sideband (USB) subcarriers simultaneously with different data and the EA modulator is adopted in the base station for implementing the maintenance-free BS in the future. The error-free transmission via the 25 km uplink and downlink fiber with the data rate of 155.52 Mbps is performed. The impact of the laser linewidth and the bandwidth of the electrical bandpass filter are investigated. It concludes that the system performance is limited by the laser phase noise for considered DPSK signal and the bandwidth of electrical bandpass filter is much larger than the 3-dB bandwidth. The trade-off has to be made when optimizing the laser linewidth and the bandwidth of the bandpass filter

    Seasonal variation of phytoplankton community assembly processes in Tibetan Plateau floodplain

    Uncovering the mechanisms underlying phytoplankton community assembly remains a major challenge in freshwater ecology. The roles of environmental filtering and spatial processes in shaping phytoplankton metacommunity in Tibetan floodplain ecosystems under various hydrological conditions are still unclear. Here, multivariate statistics and a null model approach were used to compare the spatiotemporal patterns and assembly processes of phytoplankton communities in the river-oxbow lake system of Tibetan Plateau floodplain between non-flood and flood periods. The results showed that phytoplankton communities had significant seasonal and habitat variations, with the seasonal variations being more remarkable. Phytoplankton density, biomass, and alpha diversity were distinctly lower in the flood than non-flood period. The habitat differences (rivers vs. oxbow lakes) in phytoplankton community were less pronounced during the flood than non-flood period, most likely due to the increased hydrological connectivity. There was a significant distance-decay relationship only in lotic phytoplankton communities, and such relationship was stronger in the non-flood than flood period. Variation partitioning and PER-SIMPER analysis showed that the relative role of environmental filtering and spatial processes affecting phytoplankton assemblages varied across hydrological periods, with environmental filtering dominating in the non-flood period and spatial processes in the flood period. These results suggest that the flow regime plays a key role in balancing environmental and spatial factors in shaping phytoplankton communities. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of ecological phenomena in highland floodplains and provides a theoretical basis for floodplain ecosystem maintenance and ecological health management.Peer reviewe

    Antiurolithiatic effect of ferulic acid on ethylene glycolinduced renal calculus in experimental rats

    Purpose: To evaluate the anti-urolithiatic effect of ferulic acid on ethylene glycol-induced kidney stone in a rat model.Methods: Five groups of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (6 rats/group) were used in this study. Group I rats served as normal control. Renal calculus was induced through ethylene glycol (0.75 % v/v in drinking water) administration to all rats for 28 days except those in group 1. Prior to ethylene glycol treatment, ferulic acid was given orally (gavage) to rats in groups III and IV at doses of 40 and 80 mg/kg, respectively. Rats in group V (positive control) were treated with standard drug, cystone at a dose of 750 mg/kg prior to ethylene glycol administration, while group II rats received no treatment. Kidney tissue and blood serum were sampled after 28 days and used for biochemical and histopathological analyses.Results: Rats in group II showed significant increases in oxidative stress pattern as seen in significant reductions in GSH, SOD, GPx, and CAT levels, and significant elevation of lipid peroxidation (LPO), relative to normal control group (p < 0.05). However, renal calculus formation and oxidative stress were significantly inhibited by ferulic acid treatment in groups III and IV. These results were supported by histopathological findings.Conclusion: Ferulic acid exerts anti-urolithiatic effect via inhibition of oxidative stress.     Utility of EST-derived SSR in cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) and Arachis wild species

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lack of sufficient molecular markers hinders current genetic research in peanuts (<it>Arachis hypogaea </it>L.). It is necessary to develop more molecular markers for potential use in peanut genetic research. With the development of peanut EST projects, a vast amount of available EST sequence data has been generated. These data offered an opportunity to identify SSR in ESTs by data mining.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, we investigated 24,238 ESTs for the identification and development of SSR markers. In total, 881 SSRs were identified from 780 SSR-containing unique ESTs. On an average, one SSR was found per 7.3 kb of EST sequence with tri-nucleotide motifs (63.9%) being the most abundant followed by di- (32.7%), tetra- (1.7%), hexa- (1.0%) and penta-nucleotide (0.7%) repeat types. The top six motifs included AG/TC (27.7%), AAG/TTC (17.4%), AAT/TTA (11.9%), ACC/TGG (7.72%), ACT/TGA (7.26%) and AT/TA (6.3%). Based on the 780 SSR-containing ESTs, a total of 290 primer pairs were successfully designed and used for validation of the amplification and assessment of the polymorphism among 22 genotypes of cultivated peanuts and 16 accessions of wild species. The results showed that 251 primer pairs yielded amplification products, of which 26 and 221 primer pairs exhibited polymorphism among the cultivated and wild species examined, respectively. Two to four alleles were found in cultivated peanuts, while 3–8 alleles presented in wild species. The apparent broad polymorphism was further confirmed by cloning and sequencing of amplified alleles. Sequence analysis of selected amplified alleles revealed that allelic diversity could be attributed mainly to differences in repeat type and length in the microsatellite regions. In addition, a few single base mutations were observed in the microsatellite flanking regions.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study gives an insight into the frequency, type and distribution of peanut EST-SSRs and demonstrates successful development of EST-SSR markers in cultivated peanut. These EST-SSR markers could enrich the current resource of molecular markers for the peanut community and would be useful for qualitative and quantitative trait mapping, marker-assisted selection, and genetic diversity studies in cultivated peanut as well as related <it>Arachis </it>species.     Spatiotemporal distribution and prediction of chlorophyll-a in Ulansuhai lake from an arid area of China

    Lake Ulansuhai, a typical shallow lake in an arid area that is economically and ecologically important along the Yellow River, is currently eutrophic. Long-term (2010–2020) data on chlorophyll-a, nutrient, and environmental factors were obtained from three Lake Ulansuhai monitoring stations. The temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of Chl-a were analyzed. Additionally, a hybrid evolutionary algorithm was established to simulate and predict Chl-a, and sensitivity analysis revealed the interaction between environmental factors and eutrophication. The results indicated that (1) the seasonal variation of eutrophication showed an obvious trend of spring &gt; summer &gt; autumn &gt; winter, and the concentration of Chl-a in the inlet was significantly higher than that in the outlet; (2) The inlet, center, and outlet of Ulansuhai Lake are satisfactorily affected by HEA in the best suited method. The fitting coefficients (R2) of the optimal models were 0.58, 0.59, and 0.62 for the three monitoring stations, and the root mean square errors (RMSE) were 3.89, 3.21, and 3.56, respectively; (3) under certain range and threshold conditions, Chl-a increased with the increase of permanganate index, water temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, and ammonia nitrogen concentration, but decreased with the increase of water depth, Secchi disk depth, pH, and fluoride concentration. The results indicate that the HEA can simulate and predict the dynamics of Chl-a, and identify and quantify the relationships between eutrophication and the threshold data. The research results provide theoretical basis and technical support for the prediction and have great significance for the improvement of water quality and environmental protection in arid and semi-arid inland lakes

    Higher CSF Levels of NLRP3 Inflammasome Is Associated With Poor Prognosis of Anti-N-methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Encephalitis

    Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is accepted as an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS). NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, a potent innate inflammatory mediator, can activate IL-1β and induce the migration of T helper cell into CNS. However, the possible role of NLRP3 inflammasome in the pathogenesis of anti-NMDAR encephalitis remains unclear. This study aims to determine the levels of NLRP3 and related cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-17) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients and to assess whether NLRP3 influences the clinical outcomes of this disease. Twenty-five patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis, 12 viral meningoencephalitis patients and 26 controls with non-inflammatory neurological diseases were recruited. CSF NLRP3 inflammasome, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-17 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Thirteen out of 25 patients were re-examed for the concentrations of NLRP3 and cytokines 6 months later. Our results showed significant increases of CSF NLRP3 inflammasome, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-17 in anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients. There were positive correlations between CSF NLRP3 inflammasome and cytokines in anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients. There was also a positive correlation between maximum modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores and CSF NLRP3 inflammasome in anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients. During follow-up, the decrease of mRS was positively correlated with the decrease of CSF NLRP3 inflammasomes. These results suggested that the level of CSF NLRP3 inflammasome could represent the severity of anti-NMDAR encephalitis and the reduction of CSF NLRP3 inflammasome could act as an indicator for the prognosis of this disease

    The typical method for comfort analysis is the Predicted Mean Vote and Predicted Percentage Dissatisfied (PMV-PPD). However, they present limitations in accommodating the comfort of a disabled and elder group of people, which are the most vulnerable to climate change and energy poverty. The adaptive method can give flexibility and personalisation needed to overcome the problem due to the variability of the people's metabolism, historical and behavioural preferences. Investments to upgrade the indoor environmental quality and building design can then be effectively used and, for the first time, it will be possible to tailor the solutions for these particular groups of people. The adaptive approach uses Artificial Intelligence (AI), where it can introduce the imperfect learning process. Overcoming this, instead of going further for the Explainable AI, the PMV–PPD approach can be used for the learning validation and verification needed for the adaptive setting point and standards
