Effects of space flight factors on genetic diversity of Buchloe dactyloides seeds
The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of space flight factors on Buchloe dactyloides “Jingyin No.3” seeds. After the retrieval, basic turf characters of plants were tested. Among the 100 plants tested, 21 showed great change on phenotype characters, including leaf blade length and width, height, stem diameter, number of tillers, number and length of stolon, length of stolon inter node, leaf color and extent of leaf turning yellow. 33 primers were screened in inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) analysis to evaluate DNA variation between mutations and their ground controls. Results show that 15.6 reliable bands were generated by 7 primers, of which 12.9 (80.9%) were polymorphic. Based on the study, we can conclude that the space flight factors could induce inheritable mutagenic changes on B. dactyloides seeds, and do further research to demonstrate these changes in genetic material of the mutants.Key words: Genetic diversity, Buchloe dactyloides, spaceflight, inter-simple sequence repeats
Observation of an unusual field dependent slow magnetic relaxation and two distinct transitions in a family of new complexes
An unusual field dependent slow magnetic relaxation and two distinct
transitions were observed in a family of new rare earth-transition metal
complexes, [Ln (bipy) (HO) M(CN)] 1.5 (bipy) 4HO (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; Ln = Gd,Y; M = Fe,
Co). The novel magnetic relaxation, which is quite different from those
in normal spin glasses and superparamagnets but very resembles qualitatively
those in single-molecule magnet Mn-Ac even if they possess different
structures, might be attributed to the presence of frustration that is
incrementally unveiled by the external magnetic field. The two distinct
transitions in [GdFe] were presumed from DC and AC susceptibility as well as
heat capacity measurements.Comment: Revtex, 6 figure
Kinetic frustration and the nature of the magnetic and paramagnetic states in iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides
The iron pnictide and chalcogenide compounds are a subject of intensive
investigations due to their high temperature superconductivity.\cite{a-LaFeAsO}
They all share the same structure, but there is significant variation in their
physical properties, such as magnetic ordered moments, effective masses,
superconducting gaps and T. Many theoretical techniques have been applied
to individual compounds but no consistent description of the trends is
available \cite{np-review}. We carry out a comparative theoretical study of a
large number of iron-based compounds in both their magnetic and paramagnetic
states. We show that the nature of both states is well described by our method
and the trends in all the calculated physical properties such as the ordered
moments, effective masses and Fermi surfaces are in good agreement with
experiments across the compounds. The variation of these properties can be
traced to variations in the key structural parameters, rather than changes in
the screening of the Coulomb interactions. Our results provide a natural
explanation of the strongly Fermi surface dependent superconducting gaps
observed in experiments\cite{Ding}. We propose a specific optimization of the
crystal structure to look for higher T superconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures with a 5-page supplementary materia
Reversible room-temperature ferromagnetism in Nb-doped SrTiO3 single crystals
The search for oxide-based room-temperature ferromagnetism has been one of
the holy grails in condensed matter physics. Room-temperature ferromagnetism
observed in Nb-doped SrTiO3 single crystals is reported in this Rapid
Communication. The ferromagnetism can be eliminated by air annealing (making
the samples predominantly diamagnetic) and can be recovered by subsequent
vacuum annealing. The temperature dependence of magnetic moment resembles the
temperature dependence of carrier density, indicating that the magnetism is
closely related to the free carriers. Our results suggest that the
ferromagnetism is induced by oxygen vacancies. In addition, hysteretic
magnetoresistance was observed for magnetic field parallel to current,
indicating that the magnetic moments are in the plane of the samples. The x-ray
photoemission spectroscopy, the static time-of-flight and the dynamic secondary
ion mass spectroscopy and proton induced x-ray emission measurements were
performed to examine magnetic impurities, showing that the observed
ferromagnetism is unlikely due to any magnetic contaminant.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
A minimum single-band model for low-energy excitations in superconducting KFeSe
We propose a minimum single-band model for the newly discovered iron-based
superconducting KFeSe. Our model is found to be numerically
consistent with the five-orbital model at low energies. Based on our model and
the random phase approximation, we study the spin fluctuation and the pairing
symmetry of superconducting gap function. The spin excitation
and the pairing symmetry are revealed. All of the results can
well be understood in terms of the interplay between the Fermi surface topology
and the local spin interaction, providing a sound picture to explain why the
superconducting transition temperature is as high as to be comparable to those
in pnictides and some cuprates. A common origin of superconductivity is
elucidated for this compound and other high-T materials.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Urban energy consumption and CO2 emissions in Beijing: current and future
This paper calculates the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing over 2005–2011 in light of the Beijing’s energy balance table and the carbon emission coefficients of IPCC. Furthermore, based on a series of energy conservation planning program issued in Beijing, the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP)-BJ model is developed to study the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing’s six end-use sectors and the energy conversion sector over 2012–2030 under the BAU scenario and POL scenario. Some results are found in this research: (1) During 2005–2011, the energy consumption kept increasing, while the total CO2 emissions fluctuated obviously in 2008 and 2011. The energy structure and the industrial structure have been optimized to a certain extent. (2) If the policies are completely implemented, the POL scenario is projected to save 21.36 and 35.37 % of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions than the BAU scenario during 2012 and 2030. (3) The POL scenario presents a more optimized energy structure compared with the BAU scenario, with the decrease of coal consumption and the increase of natural gas consumption. (4) The commerce and service sector and the energy conversion sector will become the largest contributor to energy consumption and CO2 emissions, respectively. The transport sector and the industrial sector are the two most potential sectors in energy savings and carbon reduction. In terms of subscenarios, the energy conservation in transport (TEC) is the most effective one. (5) The macroparameters, such as the GDP growth rate and the industrial structure, have great influence on the urban energy consumption and carbon emissions
Chalcogenide Glass-on-Graphene Photonics
Two-dimensional (2-D) materials are of tremendous interest to integrated
photonics given their singular optical characteristics spanning light emission,
modulation, saturable absorption, and nonlinear optics. To harness their
optical properties, these atomically thin materials are usually attached onto
prefabricated devices via a transfer process. In this paper, we present a new
route for 2-D material integration with planar photonics. Central to this
approach is the use of chalcogenide glass, a multifunctional material which can
be directly deposited and patterned on a wide variety of 2-D materials and can
simultaneously function as the light guiding medium, a gate dielectric, and a
passivation layer for 2-D materials. Besides claiming improved fabrication
yield and throughput compared to the traditional transfer process, our
technique also enables unconventional multilayer device geometries optimally
designed for enhancing light-matter interactions in the 2-D layers.
Capitalizing on this facile integration method, we demonstrate a series of
high-performance glass-on-graphene devices including ultra-broadband on-chip
polarizers, energy-efficient thermo-optic switches, as well as graphene-based
mid-infrared (mid-IR) waveguide-integrated photodetectors and modulators
HCV 6a Prevalence in Guangdong Province Had the Origin from Vietnam and Recent Dissemination to Other Regions of China: Phylogeographic Analyses
Recently in China, HCV 6a infection has shown a fast increase among patients and blood donors, possibly due to IDU linked transmission. We recruited 210 drug users in Shanwei city, Guangdong province. Among them, HCV RNA was detected in 150 (71.4%), both E1 and NS5B genes were sequenced in 136, and 6a genotyped in 70. Of the 6a sequences, most were grouped into three clusters while 23% represent emerging strains. For coalescent analysis, additional 6a sequences were determined among 21 blood donors from Vietnam, 22 donors from 12 provinces of China, and 36 IDUs from Liuzhou City in Guangxi Province. Phylogeographic analyses indicated that Vietnam could be the origin of 6a in China. The Guangxi Province, which borders Vietnam, could be the first region to accept 6a for circulation. Migration from Yunnan, which also borders Vietnam, might be equally important, but it was only detected among IDUs in limited regions. From Guangxi, 6a could have further spread to Guangdong, Yunnan, Hainan, and Hubei provinces. However, evidence showed that only in Guangdong has 6a become a local epidemic, making Guangdong the second source region to disseminate 6a to the other 12 provinces. With a rate of 2.737×10⁻³ (95% CI: 1.792×10⁻³ to 3.745×10⁻³), a Bayesian Skyline Plot was portrayed. It revealed an exponential 6a growth during 1994-1998, while before and after 1994-1998 slow 6a growths were maintained. Concurrently, 1994-1998 corresponded to a period when contaminated blood transfusion was common, which caused many people being infected with HIV and HCV, until the Chinese government outlawed the use of paid blood donations in 1998.With an origin from Vietnam, 6a has become a local epidemic in Guangdong Province, where an increasing prevalence has subsequently led to 6a spread to many other regions of China
Broad-line region in NGC 4151 monitored by two decades of reverberation mapping campaigns. I. Evolution of structure and kinematics
We report the results of long-term reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns of
the nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) NGC 4151, spanning from 1994 to 2022,
based on archived observations of the FAST Spectrograph Publicly Archived
Programs and our new observations with the 2.3m telescope at the Wyoming
Infrared Observatory. We reduce and calibrate all the spectra in a consistent
way, and derive light curves of the broad H line and 5100\,{\AA}
continuum. Continuum light curves are also constructed using public archival
photometric data to increase sampling cadences. We subtract the host galaxy
contamination using {\it HST} imaging to correct fluxes of the calibrated light
curves. Utilizing the long-term archival photometric data, we complete the
absolute flux-calibration of the AGN continuum. We find that the H time
delays are correlated with the 5100\,{\AA} luminosities as . This is remarkably consistent with
Bentz et al. (2013)'s global size-luminosity relationship of AGNs. Moreover,
the data sets for five of the seasons allow us to obtain the velocity-resolved
delays of the H line, showing diverse structures (outflows, inflows and
disks). Combining our results with previous independent measurements, we find
the measured dynamics of the H broad-line region (BLR) are possibly
related to the long-term trend of the luminosity. There is also a possible
additional 1.86 years time lag between the variation in BLR radius and
luminosity. These results suggest that dynamical changes in the BLR may be
driven by the effects of radiation pressure.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; comments welcome
