Magnetoplasma sheath waves on a conducting tether in the ionosphere with applications to EMI propagation on large space structures

    Get PDF
A recent space experiment confirmed sheath-wave propagation of a kilometer-long insulated wire in the ionosphere, oriented parallel to the Earth's magnetic field. This space tether experiment, Oedipus-A, showed a sheath-wave passband up to about 2 MHz and a phase velocity somewhat slower than the velocity of light in a vacuum, and also demonstrated both ease of wave excitation and low attenuation. The evidence suggests that, on any large structure in low Earth orbit, transient or continuous wave electromagnetic interference, once generated, could propagate over the structure via sheath waves, producing unwanted signal levels much higher than in the absence of the ambient plasma medium. Consequently, there is a need for a review of both electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic compatibility standards and ground test procedures as they apply to large structures in low Earth orbit

Creative conceptual expansion: A combined fMRI replication and extension study to examine individual differences in creativity

    Get PDF
The aims of this fMRI study were two-fold. The first objective of the study was to verify whether the findings associated with a previous fMRI study could be replicated in which a novel event-related experimental design was developed which rendered it possible to investigate the brain basis of creative conceptual expansion. The ability to widen the boundaries of conceptual structures is integral to creative idea generation, which makes conceptual expansion a core component of creative cognition. Creative conceptual expansion led to the engagement of brain regions that are known to be involved in the access, storage and relational integration of conceptual knowledge in the original study. These included the anterior inferior frontal gyrus, the temporal poles and the lateral frontal pole. These findings in relation to the brain basis of creative conceptual expansion were replicated in the current study. The second objective of this study was to evaluate the brain basis of individual differences in creative conceptual expansion. The high creative group relative to the low creative group was shown to exhibit greater activity in regions of the semantic cognition network as well as the salience network during creative conceptual expansion. The findings are discussed from the point of view of classical hypotheses about information processing biases that explain individual differences in creativity including flat associative hierarchies, defocused attention and cognitive disinhibition

Introduction: Jiu-jitsu practitioners constantly activate wrist flexors during training and competitions, which can generate fascia stiffness. Myofascial release is a manual therapy technique that aims to decrease myofascial adhesions, helping to improve muscle function. Objective: Evaluate if the myofascial release has an immediate effect, increasing jiu-jitsu practitioners wrist flexors and extensors muscle strength. Materials and methods: It was applied a controlled clinical trial. Have taken part of the research, jiu-jitsu practitioners with at least one year of training, between eighteen and forty years old. Muscle strength was assessed using a manual dynamometer, and then the participants were submitted to myofascial release on wrist flexor and extensor muscle groups. In the end, muscle strength was evaluated once again. Results: There was no statistically significant difference on muscle strength between pre and post intervention (p=0,64). There were also no significant differences considering the variables age (0,46), range color,(p=0,54) training time (p=0,65), and weekly frequency (p=0,48). Conclusion: Myofascial release intervention alone was not able to generate an immediate result on the increase of muscle strength. We suggest more research to evaluate the effect of the continuous use of the technique on muscle strength

Pediatric melioidosis in Sarawak, Malaysia: Epidemiological, clinical and microbiological characteristics

Background Melioidosis is a serious, and potentially fatal community-acquired infection endemic to northern Australia and Southeast Asia, including Sarawak, Malaysia. The disease, caused by the usually intrinsically aminoglycoside-resistant Burkholderia pseudomallei, most commonly affects adults with predisposing risk factors. There are limited data on pediatric melioidosis in Sarawak. Methods A part prospective, part retrospective study of children aged <15 years with culture-confirmed melioidosis was conducted in the 3 major public hospitals in Central Sarawak between 2009 and 2014. We examined epidemiological, clinical and microbiological characteristics. Findings Forty-two patients were recruited during the 6-year study period. The overall annual incidence was estimated to be 4.1 per 100,000 children <15 years, with marked variation between districts. No children had pre-existing medical conditions. Twenty-three (55%) had disseminated disease, 10 (43%) of whom died. The commonest site of infection was the lungs, which occurred in 21 (50%) children. Other important sites of infection included lymph nodes, spleen, joints and lacrimal glands. Seven (17%) children had bacteremia with no overt focus of infection. Delays in diagnosis and in melioidosis-appropriate antibiotic treatment were observed in nearly 90% of children. Of the clinical isolates tested, 35/36 (97%) were susceptible to gentamicin. Of these, all 11 isolates that were genotyped were of a single multi-locus sequence type, ST881, and possessed the putative B. pseudomallei virulence determinants bimABp, fhaB3, and the YLF gene cluster. Conclusions Central Sarawak has a very high incidence of pediatric melioidosis, caused predominantly by gentamicin-susceptible B. pseudomallei strains. Children frequently presented with disseminated disease and had an alarmingly high death rate, despite the absence of any apparent predisposing risk factor

Thinking about and working with archives and records: a personal reflection on theory and practice

Looking back over a career that has lasted 40 years (so far) the author reflects on developments in his own thinking and the influences involved. Not least amongst these are: the British public records tradition which predominated at UCL when he studied there; the American historical manuscripts tradition which was in the process of aligning with strands of postmodernism when he held visiting fellowships in the USA; the reconfiguration of Records Management in sub-Saharan Africa in response to public sector reform in which he was involved as an advisor; and the experience of teaching postgraduate students in Britain and overseas. The author’s publications have appeared in a wide range of journals and as monographs, some of them published overseas. Here he draws together the common strands that connect them. Finally he argues that hermeneutic techniques and the concept of fiduciarity deserve to be given serious consideration in debates about archive and records theory

A recording is not available for this presentation.Institutional repositories have been created primarily to disseminate and preserve faculty research and the scholarly output of academic departments, institutes, centers and research units. IU's Archives of Institutional Memory (AIM) was created to collect, preserve and make available those records that do not fit neatly into the typical DSpace environment, namely the official records of the University, such policy documents, annuals reports, and IU Bulletins. At this presentation the University Archivist will review 1) the mission and objectives of AIM; 2) how AIM fits into the larger IU strategy for disseminating and preserving mission critical records; 3) the appraisal process for determining what goes into AIM; and 4) the preservation strategies that are being implemented, which will include a review of PDF/A as a preservation format
